MAC Unsung Heroes: Party Line Lipstick

October 12th, 2011 by Karen 32 Comments

Should you ever find yourself at a loss to locate a fabulous red lipstick for fall, dial 555-HOT-REDS, and kiss your lip grief goodbye.

Listen carefully to the menu because their options have changed. When you get to the part that starts, “If you like MAC Dubonnet but find it a touch too brown,” hit two followed by the pound key.

That should take you directly to today’s MAC Unsung Hero, which, incidentally, happens to be a Party Line ($14.50).

Lipstick, that is. 🙂

Not even hot chai lattes, chubby baby cats in Halloween costumes and dirty/flirty texts from Ryan Gosling can hold a candle to Party Line’s opaque, plummy red.

Bold, creamy and hydrating, it’s one of my favorite red lipsticks for fall, but I have yet to figure out what it has to do with actual party lines.

(Good grief! I just almost typed “panty lines!”)

Perhaps MAC thinks you’ll love the color so much that you’ll want to call and tell your friends. 🙂 I know I did when it appeared with the other Cremesheens in 2008.

Even so, I do have one quibble with Party Line and its Cremesheen brethren. They tend to migrate on my lips, so I’ll usually apply a liner first to keep it steady, especially when I’m wearing the darker shades (like this one). I really like the look of MAC Cremestick in Red Enriched ($14.50) when it’s paired with Party Line, but if you have a nude lip liner around, it should work well, too.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

What should I do what should I do!? 🙂

Isn’t it perfect for fall? 🙂 Do you usually wear darker lippies around this time of year, Antonia?

You would be asking the wrong person about whether or not to watch American Horror Story! I am a complete wuss when it comes to anything scary and I stay far, far away from these things. Although, I must say that I’m really looking forward to the new series Once Upon a Time. That’s just the right level of creepy for my taste.

Party Line looks so pretty on you. Now that it’s fall I think I have to put away all the sheer glosses and start wearing lipsticks again.

I just saw the commercial for that. You’ll have to let me know if it’s good.

Random, but have you seen Pan Am? I watched an episode yesterday and enjoyed it. They also do some interesting things with the makeup.

I’ve seen Pan Am and I liked it. It’s a good way to get our fix of that era until we get some new Mad Men episodes. I’m going through serious Don Draper withdrawals!

I enjoy that show, too. The character development is excellent.

Don’s such a hot mess. When the next season rolls around, I hope the writers give him a good chunk of time to be happy (because we all know he’s inevitably going to muck things up… ).

I say don’t watch the horror show, but then again that’s what I have opted for every day of my life…I am so paranoid and such a wimp–I can’t even handle suspense!

I usually can handle horror but for some reason this show takes it to the next level. There’s a lot of really odd and disturbing things!

I really, really love your unsung heroes post. I know a lot of the attention MAC gets is for their never ending limited edition collections, but this helps me build up a list of things I would like from their great permanent line, too!

I think this color is amazing on you. I always thought ‘red’ = candy apple red so to see this listed as a red is eye opening because it’s definitely a color I wouldn’t shy away from.

      Hi MN,

Thank you. 🙂 Isn’t it cool to know there’s a whole world of red lippies for you to explore? Brownish reds, burgundy reds, purplish reds…

Are you currently wearing red lipsticks, or are you just getting into them?

I bought Elizabeth Arden’s anniversary ‘red lipstick’ last year which was quite sheer and a good intro to wearing red. I’m looking forward to wearing bolder lip colors in the fall (I”m more of a lipgloss girl so this will be a departure for me).

I love it on you, especially in the first photo! I never would have thought to wear a red lip with a smoky eye but you make it looks so easy. 🙂

I do look forward to these unsung posts. I haven’t quite jumped into the MAC pool yet (for fear of a burgeoning obsession that might rival my love for nail polish) but these kinds of posts are slowly but surely pushing me over the edge. I’m not quite sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.. 😛

These unsung hero posts are great for opening up my eyes to permanent MAC items I have often overlooked or reminging me of shades I own and forgot were there! I think at some point when the cremesheens first came out I wanted practically all of them, but obviously couldn’t afford to do that!
Is red enriched in the permanent collection?

Oh, that color is hella gorgeous. I’m not a “red” lipstick person, but these tones are the kind I would try (Dubonnet and Party Line). And fall definitely seems like the time to stash away the glosses and move into something a little more matte. 🙂

Hello, there! I just bought Party Line for myself, and I’m struggling hardcore to find a lipliner which would suit — the lipstick itself looks red in some lights and berry in others, so I’m at a loss. What would you suggest? I prefer buying less expensive lipliners, so if you could suggest anything at the drugstore level, that would be great. Thanks!
