MAC Unsung Heroes: Woodwinked Eyeshadow Fakes a Good Night’s Sleep

May 13th, 2010 by Karen 46 Comments

MAC Woodwinked Eyeshadow ($14.50) rocks harder than Metallica. 🙂 Like a beauty BFF, this shimmery shadow’s been with me through good times and bad. Brown in the pan, it applies like a lovely warm gold, and I find myself still reaching for it often because it’s one of those disbelief-suspending shades able to fake a good night’s sleep.

If I had to pick one shadow to have with me after an all-nighter, Woodwinked would be it. A few swipes of this permanent collection shadow on my lids, and I swear I look well rested.

The MAC Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite products from MAC’s permanent collection…
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Powersurge Eye Kohl
  • MAC Unsung Heroes: All That Glitters Eyeshadow Is Not Just Another Gold
  • MAC Unsung Heroes: The Technakohl Liners
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Groundwork Paint Pot
  • MAC Unsung Hero: Nymphette Lipglass

I love to wear it on the lid with MAC Soft Brown (a warm orangey brown) in the crease and MAC Arena (a shimmery peach) on the brow bone. I may also add a brown or black liner and mascara for a quick and dirty daytime eye.

Wearing Woodwinked on the lids, Soft Brown in the crease and Arena on the browbone

What say you about MAC Woodwinked? What other ways do you like to wear it?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

My quick and dirty Woodwinked trick is Ww all over the lid up to just above the crease, blended out with Shroom or Ricepaper + UD 24×7 in Bourbon — less than 5 minutes and my eyes are ready! 🙂

I do love WWinked — looks awesome on you!!! 🙂

Things were busy here at work. Plus I was car-less until yesterday afternoon. I decided to have some tune up etc etc work done and it took longer than expected. Poor Hubs was run down waking up early and driving me back/from work. Thats over now though because my car is back! 🙂

I hope your weekend goes great! 🙂

I<3 Woodwink, but I don't own it, for some weird reason, I have never picked it up. Looks like it should take up permanent residence in my palette.

Lies! Lies and falsehoods! Woodwinked actually gets a lot of love… if you ask me, it’s more like a quiet, resinous song than an unsung hero 😛 (But then again, perhaps that’s just because you’ve used it in a lot of FOTDs before, so I’ve gotten used to seeing the name!)

    She looks gorgeous on you!

      Hi Christina C,

I did a mix on the cheeks — NARS Orgasm on the apples and NARS Laguna bronzer to contour. On my lips I’m wearing MAC Nympehtte lipglass.

I got my makeup and hair trial done last Saturday. The makeup artist put Woodwinked on my lid, Expresso in my crease, blended it out with Soft Brown and high light with Rice Paper. And I love the way it looked on me. I don’t have many Mac eye shadows, but I am planning to buy all those she used.

First off, congrats on your upcoming wedding! When’s the big day?

As for the MAC shadows, you won’t regret buying those shades. You’ll be able to use ’em with everything.

I love these “unsung heroes” posts – I HEART you Karen!
You remind me of all the pretty eye shadows I already own. I have been rocking your UD Smog/All that glitters smoky eye for quite sometime now. I tried that look using Satin Taupe and looks like I’ll have to try Woodwinked with Arena.

Aw – Arena – my favorite multi-tasking eye shadow!

Glad to hear you’ve been working the UD Smog/MAC ATG combo. That’s been a fave of mine for the past few weeks too.

And Arena is all kinds of awesome. If they ever discontinued it I’d cry.

I did this power combo today – I used Brown Down in the crease and a thin line of blacktrack fluid line. I also tried out Rimmel Glam Eyes today which I love. It’s been a long time since I really liked a drugstore mascara for under $10!

How do you feel about Sumptous Olive? could you possibly do a post on ideas how to use this shade more? Thanks lady!!

Woodwinked is actually the least favourite mac eyeshadow that I’ve ever owned! I’m very very pale with blue undertones and on me, woodwinked is an unflatterying, shimmery orange. It’s gorgeous in the pan, but I haven’t found that I can make it work at all. :/

    ooooooo, I love Woodwinked.

This is almost always in my FOTD. one of my MAC palettes is a 4-pan with Jest (disc., boo….it’s a pale shimmer peach), Trax, Woodwinked and Nylon. I use these 4 shades constantly…usually in this pattern: Nylon in the tearducts and brow bone, Woodwinked in crease, Trax blended across crease and outer V and then a little Jest to blend the Nylon. shimmery but neutral. I have dark dark dark brown eyes.

I LOOOVE woodwinked! It’s for sure a favorite of mine as well, in my top 5 mac shadows 🙂 I wear it with espresso in the crease. Sometimes it looks a bit orangey on my skin if I wear it alone, but if I have a good base underneath it looks amazing every time!

I’ve been thinking of purchasing this for the last week or two, but something just kept stopping me from going through with it whenever I was in-store. I swatched it and Tempting (which I own) side by side and they look rather similar so maybe the similarity between the two’s stopping me from purchasing Woodwinked.

    Hi Karen,

This is my 1st time commenting. I love your blog and your sense of humor.

Woodwinked looks like a shade I need to try. Is it a lot darker than All that Glitters? I am NW25 so I was wondering how it would look.

Some of my favorites are All that Glitters, Wedge and Handwritten.

This one has been on my wishlist for awhile, but there always seems to be something I *want* more. 😀 I’m getting a new lippie this weekend, so I think I’m going to grab good ole woodwinked while I’m there. I have All That Glitters, is this a little more taupe/less pinkish than that?

I have been using Woodwinked for a while, in fact, since approximately 2004-2005?. I remember I was looking for some decent makeup for my graduation day and I stumbled upon the MAC counter. The makeup artist over there paired Woodwinked with Da Bling, a beautiful pink. He sweeped the golden shadow all over my lid and then he used the pink tone with his blending blush over my crease, blending it subtly, creating a very natural looking makeup, but very youthful, and playful at the same time.

When I was moving to Canada, I put them bith inside one of my makeup bags, and when I arrived, I found both shadows were completely smashed into pieces. I felt like crap, because they were my favourite eyeshadows, and well worth the price ^^.

…now I am addicted to MACs To the Beach collection! ^^

OMG I feel the same way as you do about Woodwinked! It is my secret weapon for most of my eyeshadow looks! One time specifically, I did a trial for a bride who absolutely wanted a dark/black eye look for her big day. I did what she asked, but felt it wasn’t glam enough for a wedding. I added Woodwinked right in the middle of her lid and *BAM* instant gorgeous and she LOVED it! =) So yes, Woodwinked rocks!

At first I hated it, because I didn’t want anything too warm on my lids. I only wanted cool toned. But I had purchased it anyways since it was so popular. I despised it. After a while of testing new shadows, and finally using warm shadows and loving it. Now it’s my favourite eyeshadow lol. I’m such a loser. My fave way to wear it is, with wedge placed first into the crease, and then woodwinked on the center of the lid. some carbon smudge on the lower lashline, blacktrack fluid line and false lashes mascara. It’s perfect!
