Urban Decay Fall 2009 Purple Cat Eye Face of the Day

August 12th, 2009 by Karen 108 Comments

Earlier today I needed a little help getting over the hump day blues, so I pointed my browser in the direction of Urban Decay’s big friends and family sale.

From now through August 20, get 30% off online orders with coupon code FNFF1 at checkout.

I was looking at the online fall catalog when I felt a sudden urge to play.

This was my inspiration for the eyes…

urban-decay-cosmetics-fall-2009-fotd2-081209-1

…and then I tried a version of these nude lips here:

urban-decay-fall-2009-fotd-081209-1

LOL, pardon the fan action. 🙂 I couldn’t resist.

I was actually sweating bullets in these pics because it was like hot soup in my apartment today.

The lips and eyes

I wanted to stick to Urban Decay products for the lips and eyes; that’s a layer of 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Wallflower beneath Lipstick in Naked on my lips.

And the purple cat eye liner is courtesy of Ink For Eyes Cream Eyeliner in Binge (a matte navy blue) beneath Deluxe Eyeshadow in Frigid (a shimmery purplish blue).

Getting sharp eyeliner edges

Messing around today I tried a new trick to get sharp lines. I wet the edge of a wedged makeup sponge with eye makeup remover (I used Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover) and gently ran the sponge along the edge of the liner.

Not bad, right? They aren’t as sharp as a Louboutin heel, but they’re good enough for government work!

Dark lips bring the drama

I also tried a second version of the look, swapping the nude lip look for a darker vampy one.

Here I’m wearing Urban Decay Lipstick in Confession (a dark and creamy berry) with some Urban Decay Pocket Rocket Lipgloss in James on top.

Hope you had a good day today. Looks like we’re over the hump! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood windblown beauty addict,

Karen

I’m feeling that eyeliner combo! I tried out the same look some days ago but used Rimmel Colour Mousse in Midnight instead (no Urban Decay for me, boo!). I like the one with nude lips best…and I like your top too, it’s cute!

      Hi Marce,

Oh, nice! Yeah, I think the colors are easily dupeable w/drugstore goodies. I bet your look was the hotness!

And thanks regarding the top. It’s the top half to a gray sundress I got last year from Old Navy. Here’s the rest of it: Old Navy Dress.

Woohoo for fan action! I love it when it’s windy enough outside to blow my hair off my face, but that usually means a hurricane is coming our way! :/ I’m inspired to try this look for a fun night out. I like it best with the nude lips – and I agree, the top is cuuuute!

      Hi CC,

Girl, hurricanes scare me. I live in earthquake country, too, and hurricanes scare me even more than earthquakes!

I can see why celebs love their fans. I swear, they make everything better.

How has your Wednesday been? I’m about to eat a very depressing Lean Cuisine (bluh) and then watch some TV.

      Hi Lexi,

It’s pretty good as a base for powder shadows, but on its own it’s kinda challenging (it moves a LOT). Do you have a navy blue gel liner in your stash? You could probably do this with something like MAC Fluidline or maybe even Lancome’s liner from the Declaring Indigo collection.

OHH girl, I’ve tried Vinyl on and it’s hot! I just might have to get that with the FF sale. 🙂

Ooh, that’s pretty. Ha ha, everyone needs a little fan/hair dryer action every once in a while.

If only everytime I attempt to do a dramatic cat-eye, it didn’t look strange to me. Maybe I don’t have the kind of eyes for a dramatic cat-eye or something but it always looks strange in my eyes! I love the dramatic cat-eye look too!

Zena went in to get her toenails clipped today. Apparently (I stayed home for once. I normally go to EVERY vet visit). the vet tech was new because she didn’t know Zena. When Zena gets her toenail trims, she doesn’t do WWIII anymore but she bucks like a horse and has to be held a la horse style. Well, Zena bucked and the tech CLIPPED HER QUICK on one of her toenail on her left front paw. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the carnage from a nail getting cut that short, but if you don’t grab clot powder the second it happens, it’s a might bloody mess. We tend to keep Zena’s nails a tad longer in the summer because she gets tons of walks and has a digging tendency when the bunny runs under the porch so she wears them down. Zena came home with short short nails and a nicked nail. My poor doggy!!!

I also got my nails trimmed today and they’re friggin’ short. I normally don’t cut them down to where my quick is but my fingernail clipper decided to not cooperate today. My index fingers and my thumbs seem to be the only ones that got clipped to the length I wanted. I don’t let my nails get too long (2mm or up seem to be the scratching-my-eyeballs-out-whilst-taking-my-contacts-out length) but I don’t like them this short! I didn’t spend tons of money on nail polish just to have my nails be as short as they were when I was a nail biter. Evil fingernail clippers. Must drum nails on my desk to encourage growth.

Have you seen the Lovely Bones trailer? Oh my God, I can’t wait until December. It looks fabulous.

Poor doggy! Give her an extra big hug for me.

Bummer about your nails. The good thing is they grow back, yay! Sometimes I like having really short nails… I can type faster with ’em. Did you paint them today, too?

Yeah, at least you’ll be able to use the Fluidline on it’s own — it’s a lil’ bit more flexible. 🙂

Wallflower ROCKS! Seriously, you’ll be able to wear it every day.

Hmm, well, what kind of nude are you going for? Naked is more of a pinky nude.

      Hi Shontay!

It’s cool as a shadow base but honestly when worn by itself it moves a TON, plus you really have to pack it on to get it to show — both are things to consider before pulling the trigger.

Have you had a chance to work your Oil Slick lippie yet?

I’ll be sure to hug here in the morning. She’s sleeping currently.

Yep, I painted them Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear nail polish in “Blue Me Away.” I’m not sure I like it. It’s kinda a turquoise-y blue on my nails. On the Nailphile’s nails, it’s this gorgeous Smurf blue. Maybe I got an oopsy but it’ll take me until tomorrow to decide if I scrub it off or I keep it on. I keep my nails painted all the time or I’m prone to biting them (bad habits die hard). Ii also have a habit if I find a flaw in my manicure or I hate the color, I pick off my nail polish which cannot be good for my nails.

The downside to super short nails is that when I thread my sewing machine, it’s hard to pull the bobbin string from the bottom! It’s not impossible but it’s a bit tricky.

Oh, I had a good crying session about five times reading the book. I had to read it for Women in Lit class. The trailer is on the Lovely Bones website. I can hardly recognize Stanley Tucci! Holy cow. I had to rewind the trailer online and pause it to verify it was him.

That’s a good tip w/ the mu remover. I love doing crazy winged eyeliner on party nights but I usually use tape.

Smokin’! And don’t worry… I love the fan action 😉

Where I am staying in Austria, there are ‘drugstores’ everywhere – but these ones have mostly toiletries and a few other odds and ends – as well as a whole row of lovely makeup. I haven’t had a chance to buy any (and I probably shouldn’t spend more…) but it looks like they have a few of the typical american brands as well as a few european drugstore brands. Some of them look pretty high quality! And they have sooo many mascaras lined up… if only I could try them all without buying them (but I’m not trying a mascara someone else has tried!).

The new fall line is freaking incredible. I am obsessed with the Empire Ink for Eyes — I did my eyes using promo pic #2 as my inspiration, and the liner worked beautifully (and looked super badass). Can’t wait to get the eyeshadows and the Naked lipstick, which looks like a great pinky-nude shade.

      Hi Lulee,

OMIGOSH, it’s Cargo Plant Love Eyeliner. Seriously — the BEST pencil for the waterline. It stays on forever and glides on super smooth. Here’s a review along with some swatches:

You look good, girl. For me, it seems no matter in which way I slap that makeup on my face, I am still looking at the same vecchia bruta. Use this mascara, put this in the crease, that in the crack, etc, etc. The same. However, with that Urban Decay eye shadow and the cat eye look, it truly suited you. You always look very nice and well put together. But I think that the Urban Decay look really brings out the tiger in you. I have hooded eyes and alas, winged look does nothing for me. But you look gorgeous. One thing about me-I always tell the truth. Louise

Back on topic, this piccie made me instantly smile. Reminds me of high school make-up experiments, so fun! I’ve got a concert to go to in a week, and I’m totally rocking this look. Thanks for the inspiration.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
