The Urban Decay Show Pony Palette Is Ready to Party

December 4th, 2009 by Karen 41 Comments

urban decay show pony holiday looks top

The food, generosity and general merriment in the air make the holidays a great excuse to par-tay!

In keeping with that spirit, tomorrow I’m meeting some good friends from college for grub in the city (we try to meet around this time every year).

Because we can’t hang out that often, I kinda feel like getting all dolled up.

I’m thinking of going with something sassy, like this shimmery teal and peach look I tried today using Urban Decay’s Show Pony Palette.

urban-decay-show-pony-look

It’s one of four holiday 2009 looks the Urban Decay geniuses cooked up in their yummy makeup kitchen.

I used almost everything listed above with a few exceptions — I left out Urban Decay Rocks (wasn’t in the mood for the gems), and substituted MAC Blushbaby for UD Quickie Afterglow.

I started with a layer of Urban Decay Sin Primer Potion beneath the shadows to increase their staying power and added Urban Decay Skyscraper Mascara for extra oomph on my lashes.

A few things occurred to me while I was working my way through the look…

  • Snatch eyeshadow causes glitter blizzards! The glitter fallout got all over my brown bone and crease. If you decide to give it a try, consider applying your eye makeup first, and clean up any stray glitter before applying concealer and/or foundation.
  • Try a variation of this look using a golden brown shadow in the crease. Getting the teal shadow, Painkiller, to blend into Snatch was a big pain in the you-know-what; I think it might have to do with how much the colors contrast. Next time I try this look, I plan to pop a golden brown into my crease — maybe one like NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna or MAC Eyeshadow in Soba. Either one should smooth the transition from the teal to pink.
  • Applying Naked Lipstick with a lip brush is pure genius! Most of the time I slap this rosy pink lipstick on straight from the tube, but that can look thick and heavy. After seeing it today, Naked looks so much prettier when applied with a lip brush. I think it’s worth the extra time it takes to do, resulting in a lighter, more natural lip.

      Hi Roxanne,

Boo on them indeed. I had a killer one on my chin that finally settled down… thank goodness for benzoyl peroxide and foundation, yikes!

How’s your Friday going? Got any plans for tonight?

You like so cute with teal eyeshadow. I don’t have my heart set out on a holiday look yet but I am leaning towards silver because I recently picked up a lot of silver and metallic eyeshadows.

Wow, looks great Karen! I’m so impressed you got those two to blend and play nice! I’ve got that palette, and I know that Painkiller is super pigmented. And you’re right, Snatch has serious fallout. I’d like to do that look, but I think it would turn out way too bright for my super pale skin. Still, I may try it for fun! (After all, that’s why the makeup gods created eye makeup remover, right?)

      Hi Stacie,

You’ve gotta do it! I was really shocked with how bright Painkiller looked… it’ll definitely be dramatic on pale skin, but that could be really hot. If you have a camera and feel like sharing you can always send me a pic. 🙂 I love seeing how makeup looks on different people.

Hope you’re having a great Friday so far!

Wow, I like the hair even more with it half back like that…. I may take that top pic in with me when I get a haircut. I wish I could rock those bangs but I worry it’ll make the bottom half of my face super prominent.

Ooh, pretty and fun! I think I’m falling in lemming with Naked!

As a side note, I picked up UD’s mini eye pencil in Corrupt via Evil-Bay, and I am so happy! It is beautiful, creamy, espresso-brown goodness! I really hope they make this a perm color somewhere down the line!

Pretty look! Hope you had a great time…I stopped at my MAC counter today to get some advice on creating a green and gold look for my holiday staff party. I already had Humid and Sumptuous Olive, and wanted a gold color. Amber Lights was suggested, and I liked the swatch, so I got it. So happy with my purchase! I needed to rinse the hair from my hair cut away (I had the itchy back!), and thought I’d play too. I paired it with Naked Lunch and Sumptuous Olive. So nice, I thought. Didn’t know if it was the way the Amber Lights looked on me, or the combo of everything, but I can’t wait to wear it for real! I came home and searched Amber Lights on MBB, and see that you think it’s a good color too! On another note, what yummy food did you end up eating out with the girls?

Beautiful makeup! Your hair looks good too, it looks like you’ve been trying the hot rollers in this pic. I like using hot rollers when I’m getting dressed up because while my hair is curling, I’m doing my makeup at the same time. Thus, I feel like I’m cutting down on time getting ready. Have fun going out with your girls!!!

    Sending you some UD love…

My sister and I were browsing in Sephora the other day (well, I was browsing… she was looking around half-heartedly and complaining about her backpack being too heavy), and she surprised me by saying the UD Show Pony palette is pretty and she kinda wants it. Smelling a potential makeup addict convert, I told her I’d buy it for her for Christmas. So I did.. with the semi-selfish reasoning that if she changes her mind and decides she wants something else instead, I will cut my losses and keep the palette for myself 🙂

That being said, I’d love to see this look on her. She’s a total newbie at applying and blending though, so mebbe she’d let me do her makeup one day…

I missed this last week, but wow! Gorgeous and fun!! I haven’t given this palette very much thought (I’m actually just about to get the Get Baked palette from the Hautelook sale – mostly because of your last post on it teehee) but I feel like I should give it another look! I’m planning on rewarding myself with 1 makeup item after I finish my final exams and this might be it – so pretty!

Aw you look so super pretty on the first pic *.* (not counting that you look always good, but specially on that one).
For the holidays I’m planing on staying home just studying, and when I stay at home I don’t put any make on. So I’ll just be using any on days that I’ll need to go shop, or to the library, stuff like that.
My make up is never much elaborated. I’m kinda “gothy”, so I just put base, some pinkish blush (which is a eyeshadow originally), apply the same blush on my eye lids (all over), and some other color over it (usually is just white on the inside corner). Then I apply eyeliner, mascara and gloss. yey

Karen, you actually look 10 years younger with this hair and make up.
Keep going for bright clean colors and tousled looks.

Browns and plums are truly boring and never add any youthfulness ever to the youngest girls.
Lord,I wish cosmetic brands listened to us and stopped making utterly crap bronze and dirty mud colors and had to follow a legislation on producing anything but bright and clean!!!

Sorry for being emotional,it’s just frustration over last Chanel spring collection, what a piece of crap!
