Holiday Party Makeup: The Holiday Cocktail Party or Mixer

December 11th, 2009 by Karen 24 Comments

Ah, ladies. Aren’t you glad it’s Friday? 🙂 TGIF! Today, since we’re getting down to the Christmas wire and the social season’s in full effect, I thought I’d try a makeup look with a little more pizazz than my earlier ideas for office parties and small get-togethers with friends.

It hit me while thumbing through the small look book that comes with Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Volume II palette. There’s a shot of a sultry smokey eye that practically jumps right off the page!

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. II ideas 1

Admiring Studying the picture for a moment, what stood out to me were the blending and colorful shimmer.

Not wanting to spend too long on my makeup this morning, the version I tried requires a little less blending to do.

Still wanting the eyes to be the focal points of the look, I went with a (subtler) shimmery golden peach cheek using NARS Orgasm Blush and a coral lip with MAC Cremestick Liner in Summerfruit, adding a layer of Benefit Silky Finish Lipstick in Sugar Cookie on top.

I’m picturing myself wearing this to a holiday cocktail party with friends, maybe paired with something edgy (these Max Studio outfits sprang to mind).

So where’s the party at, haaaay? If you’re heading to one this weekend, can I come too? 🙂

Two weeks till Xmas!

Do you remember being a kid and feeling like the last few days before Christmas stretched on forever? Like they lasted decades? But for adults it’s like weeks pass in the blink of an eye… I swear it was just Halloween 20 minutes ago, LOL!

What are your plans this weekend? El Hub and I might go to dinner, but Tabs/T-Woww plans to stay home and watch the new episode of Jersey Shore.

He’s obsessed with that show. I caught him searching for tanning beds and hair gel on Google a few minutes ago…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

karen – how do you apply color/eyeshadow to below your lashline & in the corner? specifically, what brush? i’ve really never used eyeshadow anywhere but on my eyelids…im afraid of getting eyeshadow everywhere & then it gunking up in my eyes = major grossdom! i’m olive-skinned like you so ive really loved some of your looks over the past few days but am too afraid to try them!

      Hi Nina,

I really, REALLY love the MAC 214. Here’s a link to a post I did about it a while back. I’ve tried a number of brushes and this is my favorite for applying shadows and smudging along the lash line.

You should try a few of the looks! Don’t be scurred. 🙂 Do ’em while you’re at home watching TV… think of it as playtime. If it doesn’t turn out the way you want it, then you can always wash it off, right?

Awww ‘The Situation’ on Tabs is too cute, my dog is older (13) and he still acts like a pup when you rub his belly.

Ok I have that palette now, and need to try that eye, it’s hot!

I am still on the couch with this nasty cold that will not go away, so no parties for me. I am just hoping the rain stops long enough for me to go out and get a tree. I have no decor up yet and I am a huge Christmas decor fan!

I really need to check out Jersey Shore now. I picture those guys looking like Victoria Gotti’s sons, did you ever see her “reality” show? Horrific!

Pretty! I still tend to think of teal as summery, so would sub this out with more olive-y colors. But still very pretty on you. And I like the first outfit the best.
We going to the zoo tomorrow night-they have Christmas lights, ice carvers, hot chocolate, etc. should be fun! but we will have to bundle up….scarves and hats all the way.

Haha! I love Tabs’ “situation”! For some reason, my fiance thinks Jersey Shore is the most hilarious show ever. It’s really funny to watch the show with him and see his reactions. And we actually started calling our cat’s belly “The Predicament” the other day!

That is a way intense smokey eye! I love the teal lid color, this is probably more bold than I’d wear out, but I still really love it. I like the first outfit with the over the knee boots. Supercute!

That smokey eye looks HAWT on you. I just picked up the U/D Book of Shadows with my Sephora $15 off coupon and I can’t wait to play around with it. Tabs is so cute showing his tummy taking a cat nap. I never could have guessed that he has a bit of red hair.

    Looks great Karen!

This weekend I am hanging out with my mom and sister tomorrow and Sunday, I am meeting up with some friends who live in berkeley. They are from Spain and are only here until the end of the year. It will be our “see you later” celebration since I so plan on visiting them next year.

    Try to avoid the rain!

I had press conference for the musical I’m in yesterday evening. It was my try-out for the grey smokey-ish look for my cousin’s wedding. It worked out great, I’m really happy with it. Also it was so hot in there so that was definitely a test for the durability of the entire face… 🙂
Tonight I have more rehearsals so no going out night for me *pouts*

Love that look. The lips look great! And you have the perfect bed-head hair in that picture (is that the right term?) – I mean it in a good way.

I want to know how you styled your hair too. I must try that lip/cheek combination.

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
