Holiday Party Makeup: A Casual Get-Together with Friends

December 9th, 2009 by Karen 47 Comments

holiday party makeup tips

Not being able to concentrate worth a biscuit today, I decided to skip work and play with looks for an upcoming get-together with two of my girlfriends this Saturday.

They were bridesmaids in my wedding, and they’re coming over in the morning for brunch (I think they really just want to hang out with Tabs). 🙂

It’ll be a casual weekend thang, so maybe something light and sparkly…

This cool-toned look uses products from the Clarins Palazzo D’Oro collection.

Just like Monday’s potential office party look, this look’s pretty conservative, relying on cool browns, pinks and golds for the eyes, lips and cheeks.

To go with their collection, the holiday elves at Clarins posted four nifty eye maps.

I chose the “Festive Evening Look” because of how subtle I think the colors look on my skin tone. I’m sure lighter lovelies could also rock it for daytime but might try using a light touch during application.

Additional products I used…

  • Cheeks: Clarins Gold Attraction Face Palette layered on top of MAC Beauty Powder Blush in Shy Beauty on my cheeks
  • Eyes: Dior Sculpt Concealer as an eyeshadow base on my lids and Clarins Sparkling Wonder Volume Mascara on my lashes
  • Lips: Clarins Joli Rouge Perfect Shine Sheer Lipstick in Gold Reflections

What are some other makeup ideas for casual get-togethers with friends? 🙂

I love your look! For a casual get together with my girl pals i like a winged black eyeliner on my top lash, a lil mascara and Nars blush in exhibit a on my cheeks. For a bit of a glow benefit moon beam on my nose, cheek bones and brow bone. I find this look fresh with a bit of a pop on my cheeks.

      Hi Sharon,

Oh, that sounds really pretty. I don’t have Exhibit A but it’s on my wish list, along with a million other things from NARS.

How’s your week going so far? I hope it’s been good!

Really, Karen? Just when I thought your holiday looks could not get any better, you go and whip out THIS! *pouts* The Clarins palette is way out of my budget, but man does it look gorgeous on you. Very sophisticated, but absolutely stunning.

      What’s up, Rae!

I really like this palette. The colors are quiet, but they still sing pretty songs.

For the heck of it you should put this on your Christmas list! You never know what Santa will bring, right?

I feel like I’m in such a make-up rut, like I just wear the same thing everyday. I need to shake it off. I am going to a holiday get-together the following weekend, so I need to plan something pretty for my makeup…

      Hi Tiffany,

I hear ya. That happens to the best of us! Sometimes I just have the same makeup in my bag and end up using the same look over and over because it’s convenient.

      BTW, how was Tampa?

I seriously need to get out of my rut! blah!

Tampa was fun! It was so cold! I mean, maybe not that cold in the grand scheme of things, but colder than we expected. and windy. and we were up in the upper deck of the stadium! but my team won so that’s what matters, lol!

It’s going to be a grey smoked-out affair but not a full-on smokey eye.
And… I took the plunge and got my brows waxed this afternoon. They’re so pretty now and goodness me the difference it makes! The pain was really not as bad as I thought (upper lip at the other hand is KILLING me, ah well). Well worth it though. Thank god for mothers of my friends being licensed beauticians 🙂

Lucky you to have the hookup!

The lip wax gets easier. Just keep doing it! The fuzz-free results are worth it.

      Hi Sarah,

You could totally pull off a look with three or more shadows with just two brushes — a small shader brush like the MAC 239 and a blending brush like the MAC 217. 🙂

Hmm, have you tried practicing putting on shadow at night? I like to do that sometimes while I’m watching tv. 🙂

Oh, this is gorgeous! I love how the greyish taupe really opens your eyes!

And hm. Well, I actually usually glam it up when I have brunch with the girls since I know they’ll actually appreciate it hahaha, whereas I just do a wash of taupe with dark brown in the outer corner every other day when it’s just school and work. The MAC 5 warm pigments from this year’s holiday collection are a huge favorite, especially when paired with MAC Melon. I also love the Kat von D Beethoven or Ludwig palette and recently the Get Baked palette! I’ve been doing Half Baked and Baked on the lid, Twice Baked in the outer corner and lining my lower lashline thinly with Flipside and I think it looks quite awesome. I actually just got the Deluxe Shadow Box too and I can’t wait to do the same kind of look with the purple and pink shadows too teehee. =)

    Karen,

I have been getting your blog emailed to me for a while now but this is the first time I have commented. (Sorry!) I cannot tell you how many times this blog has helped me! I tend to be overly dramatic or non-existent when it comes to my make up. Not a great way to be when you work in public relations. Thanks to your blog I have learned quick, easy tricks that let me feed my need for creativity but are professional enough for work. You are a life saver!

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
