The MAC 214 Short Shader Brush: Small, but She Packs a Wallop!

October 2nd, 2009 by Karen 21 Comments

(Click here to see the video embedded in this post)

Let’s give a warm, makeup-lurvin’ welcome to the mini-mighty MAC 214 Short Shader Brush ($23), a tool re-released with the new Style Black collection. It’s my latest must-have MAC eye brush.

A total all-star, it gets precious shelf space beside the 217 Blending Brush and 266 Small Angle Brush.

The 214 may not look like much, but, among other things, she’s able to precisely blend and apply eyeshadows and liners along the upper and lower lash lines. The firm, dense natural bristles are really able to pack on the color, and the shape of the head — wide and flat — makes it maneuverable in tight spaces around the base of my lashes.

I love the sharp, precise lines I can make with it.

After lining my eyes with a pencil, liquid or gel liner, I’ll reach for the 214 and wet it with eye makeup remover. Then, I’ll gently run it along the edge of the liner.

CRISP!

While there are less expensive brushes out there, I think the 214’s a worthy tool. It’s just a great multi-tasking makeup brush.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Really available at Sephora? My Sephora doesn’t carry MAC products but I wish they did!

      Hi Glosslizard,

This one is so much better than any of the other MAC brushes I’ve tried to line eyes with. So worth your lust!

It’s basically a smudger brush, right? If so, i have a studio tools smudger brsh from target that does a bang-up job at only $2.49, i think! 🙂

    Hi Patty,

It blends and applies product with precision along the lower lash line — more so than other brushes I’ve tried in the past.

Thanks for offering up a drugstore alternative though! Have a great Friday!

oooh, thanks for bringing this brush to my attention! I’m looking for something to help set my eyeliner and for my lower lash line. I’m thinking this might be it!

      Hi Babybubblz,

Sure thing, hon! This is sooo much easier to use along the lash line than the 239, 219 or the 266 because the shape of the brush *really* gets in there. I hope you like it. 🙂

      Hi Amy,

I’m so jealous — I wish I could go to a MAC seminar. Instead I gotta spend the day packing, boo!

Will they be covering Style Black?

    Hi Karen!

Aw, I didn’t know this brush was being rereleased! I have something very similar to it from Sephora (black handles), the #14 Smudge brush. I think the bristles on the MAC one are longer though. But just like in your video, I love using it to blend out liner on my lower lashline or to put eyeshadow and smoke it out! I find it less “pokey” than a pencil brush.

Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂

I totally agree! I have one from Sephora that I could not live without. It’s awesome for when I want to put shadow on my lower lash line because it gives such a condensed color. Haha, comment #15 by Jacks pretty much sums up everything I wanted to say about it!

Another awesome video! I wonder how this compares to the 219 in terms of precision of smudging and ease of use.

This brush is exactly like sephora’s professional shader brush #17. Its small bristled and NOT a blending brush or Smudging brush. Think eyeshadow brush thats REALLY precise. Its absolutely incredible.

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
