Luckily, I was wearing this chocolatey reddish brown smoky eye yesterday because I spent the majority of my shift at the bakery prepping dry chocolate cake mix from scratch…which may or may not have left me covered in a fine layer of cocoa powder.
(By the way, you haven’t lived until you’ve almost tipped an industrial-sized vat of cocoa powder on top of yourself. Yes…my life is a thrill a minute, I know. Side note: Holy crap, there’s SO MUCH SUGAR in chocolate cake mix!)
About the look
Apparently, the universe wanted me to be covered in chocolate in both the makeup and culinary sense, and these chocolate smoky eyes were super simple to do with a quick smudgy eye base from an opalescent bronze pencil eyeliner, which I topped with a matte reddish brown eyeshadow.
Matchy-matchy?
When I first started wearing eye makeup about one billion years ago, I believed that if you wore any matte finishes, then everything — your liner, your eyeshadow and your base — also had to be in a matching matte, but that’s so not the case. You can totally mix and match your finishes, which is what I did here with the pearly base and the matte eyeshadow to create a satin finish.
Feel free to play and layer different finishes if you don’t already, because you never know what you’ll cook up!
Playing with blending
Also, experiment with your blending. I’m normally inclined to “blow out” my eyeshadow, a.k.a. “blend out the edges so they fade out smoothly,” but I went for more definition at the edges in this look by choosing to not buff out the edges as much as usual… I kinda like it!
The more obvious edges of the eyeshadow are framed by a bolder brow, which I whipped up by mixing brow pencil with an eyeshadow.
Makeup worn in this look
- Eyes: MAC Teddy liner and MAC Embark eyeshadow (lids), It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara (lashes), MAC Whisper of Gilt highlighter (inner corner), MAC Concrete and Urban Decay Brow Beater in Neutral Brown (brows)
- Cheeks: Charlotte Tilbury blush in Ecstasy (this pairs really well with brown eyeshadows, I’ve found)
- Base: Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer in Y41 (worn as a foundation), MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Golden
- Lips: NARS Balboa
So now, of course, I need to know what’s your favorite kind of chocolate. What is it? I’m a semi-sweet kinda girl when it comes to baked goods, but for candy, it’s MILK CHOCOLATE ALL THE WAY.
I would take off my hoop earrings and throw down for a piece of See’s Milk Chocolate Buttercream, no joke!

Karen
P.S. TGI-EFFFFFFF!

Happy Friday! I love this whole look and you know my fave part already. Team Brown Lips. 🙂 I really like the less blended eye. It’s really sharp. Just FYI, we have snow on the ground. Fall is gone. But I still like the looks!!
I hear you on the sugar in baked goods. I don’t do much baking but I started using Splenda for Baking instead of sugar (in apple crisp, etc). No one can tell the difference. Artificial sweeteners have their own issues, of course, so I’m not saying it’s healthier. It is a bit less sugary, though. 🙂

Dark chocolate for me. The darker the better. And if you’re pairing it with some red wine, I ain’t mad at ya!
Do you ever post quick video tutorials because for the life of me, I cannot ever get my eyeshadow looks to come even close to yours. Help a sister out.

This is such a nice fall look! I’ve got standard wings and a plummy lip stain today.
I’m all about milk chocolate. I’m really sensitive to bitter flavors so I struggle with darker chocolate. Supertaster problems.

I love mixing a shimmery base with a matte eyeshadow (bare study is my jam) you can create such lovely looks with shadows you already have and it’s like something new! Ha ha. I did a fairly fall look for my friends birthday with sable atop groundwork (so pretty) Dior Charnelle, the champagne color from one of those hyperreal highlighter palettes and Anastasia Kristin lipgloss. I felt so glam 🙂

I’m going to have to attempt that eyeliner-as-base trick. (Notice the word ‘attempt’, lol. I literally did not know that was a thing until you started this series of posts where you did it.) This is a great look on you.
Team Dark Chocolate! Especially if you pair it with salted caramel. Otherwise, semisweet. Seldom milk chocolate and never, ever, ever white chocolate.

You sound delicious!
All kidding aside, I’m an equal opportunity chocolate eater. Probably I lean more toward dark chocolate for just eating out of hand. But, it depends on the form of the chocolate. I love dark chocolate bars. And I love truffles covered in dark chocolate.
But, if I’m going to have a chocolate covered caramel or pretzel, I usually like milk chocolate for those.

This is such a gorgeous look. I love MAC Teddy.
Chocolate? As long it’s not white chocolate I’ll eat it. I’ve been liking chocolate by Michel Cluizel lately.
How many days a week do work in the bakery?

Absolutely a milk chocolate girl by heart!
