Shu Uemura Pink Collection: Pink Enough for the Afterlife

April 21st, 2009 by Karen 58 Comments

shu uemura pink collection

As a kid I was fascinated by pyramids and ancient Egyptian burial rituals. One day, I read that old school Eygyptians were buried with all the things they’d need in the afterlife. That gave me an idea: I listed all of the things I’d bring with me into MY pyramid for MY journey to the great beyond.

I think I needed to get out more…

Every once in a while (like today), I’ve revisited my list of afterlife necessities.

Permanent items on the list: Tabs, toilet paper and an endless supply of Strawberry Pop Tarts.

tabs-mummy-cat-final

The latest additions to the list: Shu Uemura’s Pink Collection of lipglosses and lipsticks.

If I could take all nine Rouge Unlimited Pink Lipsticks ($23 each) and five Gloss Unlimited Pink lipglosses ($22 each) with me, my pink lip needs would be eternally covered.

shu uemura pink collection pk369

What makes the new line so special? It’s the pink. Shu scientists created a new ingredient they call “Pink Hybrid Pigment.”

They claim it’s a perfectly shaped pigment particle able to produce unusual pink lip shades, with yellow and blue tints, previously unseen in the world of makeup.

shu uemura pink collection pk343

I’ve tested five of the shades so far. I couldn’t say whether they’re unlike any other pinks ever created before, but they’re definitely true pinks in every sense of the word.

  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 369: A creamy, cool and bright hot pink with blue tint
  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 343: A creamy, ultra-cool pale pink with blue tint
  • Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in PK 232: A creamy and warm pale pink with a yellow tint and silver flecks of glitter
  • Gloss Unlimited in PK 325N: A shimmery, cool medium pink with blue tint
  • Gloss Unlimited in PK 315N: A shimmery, warm dark pink with yellow tint

You know how sometimes you try on a pink lipstick or gloss that ends up looking more coral, red or plum than pink? These shades aren’t like that at all. First and foremost, they’re pink, with the blue and yellow tints adding subtly cool (blue) or warm (yellow) elements.

shu uemura pink collection pk315n

Like other Rouge Unlimited Lipsticks and Gloss Unlimited lipglosses I’ve worn in the past, the new Pink collection products apply with a mirror-like shine and vibrant pigmentation, and on my lips both the lipstick and gloss feel thin, slick (not sticky) and taste and smell faintly of orange.

In my book, pink lips are always in season. Thanks, Shu!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

You might like the Shu Uemura Pink Collection lipsticks and glosses if…

  1. …you prefer thin, non-sticky lip products,
  2. …you don’t mind lipsticks and glosses with a light taste and scent,
  3. …you want highly pigmented, true pink lip color.

Mascara Misery: Day Two

little-shop-of-horrors-dentist

I paid a visit to the dentist this afternoon, and now I’m totally dragging my feet. I’m TOW UP! I feel like I’ve been worked over in a fight. Visiting the dentist is one of my least favorite things in the world (no offense to dentists everywhere).

He used scary words like breakage and leakage, and I have to go back not one — not two — but THREE times to finish the work. Yes, I cried in the chair. 🙁

At least my waterproof mascara worked (Stila Lash Visor).

The freaking out started when the dentist hovered over me with that creepy silver hook cleaner thingy… I saw it coming at me from the side!

I’m thinking I might have to make a quick trip to MAC to kill the pain…

How’th your Thoothday been?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Awww! You poor thing! I feel your pain… dentists can be especially unnerving (no pun intended!!) because you can’t see what they are seeing!! Hope you feel better soon, but when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out, the ONLY perk was that I was told to have ice-cream to keep the area cold and numb!! 🙂 So try that if it helps…
    Take care!

      Hi Merylynmagic,

LOL, I dunno if I could handle watching what’s going on… maybe if it were happening in somebody else’s mouth, but not mine.

And yay for the ice cream perk! What’s your favorite flavor? I have a few: dulce de leche, jamoca almond fudge, pistachio…

Karen you are hilarious!! I hate the dentist too. Last year I had so much work done – 2 fillings, 1 root canal, a crown lengthening, and a crown. It took 6 months of me visiting the dentist monthly to get all that damn work done. It SUCKED.

Anywho…that PK369 is HAWTNESS. I might have to invest. Thanks, as usual, for the bad ass review!

Oh, Karen. I feel your pain. I’m overdue for a dentist visit…I had some bad memories of my childhood dentist (she used to watch TV while working on my teeth…not kidding) so I have to suck it up and get over it.

(I also loved anything Egyptian, and was fascinated by the whole “Let’s remove the brain by way of the nose with a big hook during mummification” thing. Yeah, I needed to get out more too!) 🙂

These shades are gorgeous–they look great on you. I like PK369–it sorta reminds me of a more subtle (un-shimmery, I guess) version of MAC’s Strawberry Blonde lipglass from the Blonde Brunette Redhead collection. I love that lipglass, so I might have to check that one out. Good luck with the dentist visits!

Ack, I’m one of the few who get bored in the dentist chair. My orthodontist literally wrecked every single tooth that I had. I chose to have, instead of dentures at 16, extreme tooth reconstruction. Yes, I had Valium for the first billion times there (I went once a week). I just become incredibly fidgety after an hour and a half in the chair. I’m one of those people that need at least two shots of Novocaine to numb out an area too (the most shots of Novocaine I’ve had for one area is EIGHT; yes, eight).

I’m going to a new dentist on Thursday as my old one retired so I’m a bit nervous. I only need some of my fillings refilled but I hate the drills (noise) and the green phosphoric acid gel (taste. ew to the 10th degree). I’m pretty okay with the drills once I’m numbed out as I hate pain but the noise is awful. They need to invent silent drills. I need a silent drill. Phosphoric acid just tastes icky if you manage to swallow some of it. I did manage to get a burn on my chin from the acid too. I have no idea how it got there but I have the scar to prove it.

What kind of procedure do you need? You can always ask your dentist to prescribe you a sedative like Valium to help with your nerves. Of course, if you get a sedative, I’d say have El Hub drive.

The pink glosses are pretty but I have enough pink lipstick to last a few centuries, I think. My favorite is a Revlon one that’s the exact same dusty rose color as my lips. God, I love that lipstick. I haven’t worn it in a while though. Hmmmmm, I may have to break it out again. I’ve been into my Max Factor Lipstick in Sweet Tart as it’s a kinda bold pale pink. It’s fun to wear. 🙂

      Hi Kate & Zena,

Good luck on your Thursday visit! I hope it goes smoothly. And good call on the silent drill… I’ll ask my dentist if there’s such a thing, LOL!

I’m going in for a few deep cleanings and some other stuff. They actually brought up the fact that they could use Nitrous on me and I was like, um, no. I’m a bit of a control freak…

Revlon makes some good lipstick! I was all about “Cherries in the Snow” back in the day.

Happy Wednesday to you and Zena!

I don’t have an aversion towards going to the dentist despite having had 4 wisdom teeth removed (two at a time) in recent memory. The worst part about it was that he was a cocky guy who talked down to me (but don’t all French), he cut my gum open and used some electric saw to saw my tooth into little parts so that the tooth could be removed and then he gave me 6 stitches. His medicine aggravated my gastric condition and had me bed-ridden for a week and after that, to remove the stitches, he did a half-ass job of it (left half the stitches in cuz he forgot) and he wasn’t the most gentle guy in the world for the job.

And despite this trauma, I still enjoy visits to the dentist. Just not that guy. I guess the idea of coming out with clean teeth and no 6 months-old food particles stuck in between anymore is enticing enough.

Back to the lipsticks. PK 369 looks a little like Strayin’ (MAC HK) to me without the glitter.

You’ve gotta check these pinks out — I think you’ll love ’em.

I hope that your gums are okay. That must be very stressful to take care of them so much and still have them bleed on you.

Gah, basically I’m having some gum issues, so I have to go for two separate “deep cleanings” where shots are involved (boo). It also turns out that I’m grinding my teeth away because of stress, so I gotta get a mouth guard thingy. SEXY!

Anyway, apart from the bleeding, how did your dentist appointment go? Are you cavity free?

    Hey Karen!

HA! I knew someone else had to have gotten a kick outta that too. 🙂

Yeah, she watched TV. It’s hard to explain, but the chair I used to sit in had this huge pole attached to it (in front of the chair) and on top of the pole was a platform, and on top of that platform was a TV. The best (worst!) part? When the reception on the TV went wonky, she would stop what she was doing, and mess with the antennas with a YARDSTICK. Mmhmm.

I’ve been ok! Still looking for jobs, but I’m getting to the point where I’m getting REALLY bored. Usually if I’m bored I’ll just troll around on the computer, but even that is getting boring, ya know? What about you?

Ah, the lovely deep cleanings. I haven’t had one of those in about two years, I think. It’s all been reconstruction. I’m in the chair anywhere from 1-4 hours. I don’t use Valium anymore as all it does now is make me twice as fidgety.

Your dentist suggested laughing gas? Seriously? That’s pretty extreme. Most suggest Valium or another sedative in a low dose first before laughing gas. I only got 4mg of Valium because I’m immune to 2mg from doctors administering it during prolonged seizures.

Thanks for the luck. I’m packing the Nivea: A Kiss of Moisture lip balm with me. I can’t stand dry lips.

i was reading your posts re: cavities. i worked for an oral surgeon for 6 years.
Get yourself some anti-cavity Flouride rinse.( comes in Store brand, too) Follow the directions and use it every night after you brush & flosss. People are spending too much time whitening their teeth. Spend more time with Flouride. Your teeth are enamel, the hardest element and the flouride binds with the enamel making them stronger; hense resisting tooth decay.
    Don’t forgot to floss too!

      Hi Michele,

Thanks for this. My doc mentioned getting a rinse like that so next time I pop by the drugstore I’m going to pick one up.

      I’ve been flossing like a fiend today…

    Hi Karen,

What is the staying power of these lipsticks? LOVE pk369… wish there were better names for the lipsticks too.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
