MAC Unsung Heroes: Chicory Lip Pencil

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

I know, I know — we’re all wearing masks. So, what’s the point of wearing lipstick or lip liner, or any other lip products at all?

Listen, just because my face is covered doesn’t mean I don’t get the urge to wear something on my lips. I still LOVE wearing lip color, and I’ll wear it around the house, just because. I don’t need a logical reason. 😁

A few days ago I just happened to come across a lip pencil from MAC that made my heart flutter like a hummingbird, and I thought you might like it as well. It’s a warm matte peachy brown called MAC Chicory, and I think it’s lurvely.

It’s a little reminiscent of ’90s-style brown lipsticks like MAC Paramount, which is totally bad-@ss — but Chicory is a little less aggressive due to the presence of the peach, so it’s more wearable and down to earth. It’s a kinder, gentler version of the girl who loves wearing combat boots, Levis and button-down flannel.

I’m wearing MAC Costa Riche liner as a base on my lids with MAC Give Me Sun MSF Powder on top.

The shade lives in MAC’s permanent line, and it’s $18. It should last a while, too. Some people aren’t fans of MAC’s pencil liners because of their harder texture, but I don’t mind it at all. I like the stiffer consistency. It helps with longevity, especially if you’re using them as a lipstick, which in this case just entails lining and filling in your lips with Chicory and layering your favorite lip balm on top. (Lately, that’s been CeraVe Hydrating Balm for me.)

If you’re a fan of warm brown eyeshadows, and you lean heavily on Soft Brown, Saddle, Sable or, if you love and wear Costa Riche or Teddy liner often (which I do!), Chicory is a fantastic complement to any of those colors.

Give it a try. I think you’ll love it!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

This is so pretty on you, Karen! I like wearing lipstick around the house too, it’s kind of a mood booster when I catch myself in the mirror!

I wear lippies for video calls at work, it helps you look good on camera. Pretty color!

I went to some kitschy local shops for stocking stuffers today and saw masks with a clear window in them- the worker was wearing one too! I know folks who sign can’t do a traditional mask because facial expressions are a part of ASL, I think it’s supposed to be helpful for those folks, but you could also show off some lips.

Hi Karen, are you wearing only the
LipPencil in your photos in this post or
a Lipstick oR the CeraVe lip balm over top? If it is the CeraVe does it have colour or not? I really like the lip colour.

You gave me a huge smile on a very trying day at work when you mentioned Paramount. As pale as I am and as dark as my friend is we wore that colour religiously through university. Great memories. There was another one too a lighter brown and I cannot remember the name but loved it. Thanks for making me smile!

      Hi Vita,

      The CeraVe is colorless. 🙂

I put on not one but three Chanel lipsticks today. Of course all three were very, very, very similar in tone. It was the finish that was different.
For the past three days I’ve been putting on a quick base and then trying out shadows and lipsticks in my collection. If it smells it gets tossed. If I wonder why I ever bought the color it gets tossed. If I’m on the fence about it, I set it aside in a small box to revisit it another day or compare it to similar colors. If I really like it, I put a sticker on it that says “Good, OK. or Keep” and it goes back into the collection. I’ve tossed quite a few Tom Ford lipsticks. Why do they go bad so quickly? And a couple of cream shadows.
BTW, I’m wearing Prunella today. It’s my other favorite MAC liner next to Teddy.

It’s lovely (which you knew I’d say since you had me at 90s brown). You actually look super glam in the photo. Not that it’s surprising but I know it’s a casual look – it just seems quite sophisticated. 🙂

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
