A Springy Purple and Orange Makeup Look Inspired By Purple Rain

When the Purple One inspires your look

The first time I saw Purple Rain I was eight, and it was at my friend Peachy’s slumber party.

Peachy’s mom let us pick out whatever movie we wanted at the video store (this was right after she took us to Chuck E. Cheese, of course, where I killed it at ski ball), and I’m 100% positive she had no idea what the movie was about when she rented it.

Even though none of us understood what was going on when we watched it, we knew that Prince was in it, and that’s all we really needed to know. To this day, the soundtrack from the movie is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I don’t care pretty baby, just take me with you.

To take it a step further, the colors on my Purple Rain tee (thanks, Target) inspired this orange and purple makeup look…

One of my favorite tees

I’m an NC42, by the way.

If I had Prince’s shimmery purple suit with the ruffled white button-down shirt, I’d wear this look with that OOTD in a heartbeat, ha ha ha!

Orange and purple combos are one of my makeup faves because they’re a no-brainer. The colors compliment each other as opposites on the color wheel, and when you put ’em together, they just make sense. If I’m in the mood to wear something colorful, all I have to do is find tones that I like in both families, and I’m good to go.

I’m all about contrasting elements in makeup, and I did it here by pairing warm orange tones on my lids, cheeks and lips with the cool purple liner on my lash lines.

Also, I tried this look with two different lip finishes, matte and gloss. I prefer the matte because I like how it contrasts with the shimmer on the lids and lash lines. Also, I feel like the matte balances the bright colors on the lids a little better than the gloss.

Both could work, though… It just depends on how bold you wanna go!

Here it is with the glossy lip…

Makeup worn in this look

Eyes: NARS Isolde (lid), NARS Persia (crease), Urban Decay Asphyxia (liner), IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara (lashes), MAC Clear Brow Gel and MAC Brun (brows)
  • Cheeks: MAC That’s Peachy (blush), Hourglass Radiant Bronze Light (bronzer)
  • Lips: MAC Sugar Dada (lipstick) and MAC Female Gaze (gloss)
  • Base: Estee Lauder 24H Hydraprep in Medium Deep

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. What’s your favorite Prince song?

Good morning Karen, purple is the one color that never looks good on me! It looks very tacky and cheap on me but you can totally rock it! But I still love Prince of course! Have a lovely day, Sissi 💜💜💜

      Hey Sissi!

Hmm, maybe we just haven’t found the purple for you yet. How about a deep plum?

Oh, I remember that movie – I loved Prince back then. Haven´t listened to his music in quite some time now though.

You know, I have never seen Purple Rain. I wonder if it’s still out there to rent anywhere!

Love the orange and purple combination. So fun!

P.S. I loved playing ski ball too!

Ski ball was my favorite. Would you believe it’s still around? We took Connor to this mini golf place with an arcade a couple weeks ago, and they had a few ski ball machines.

P.S. I think Purple Rain might be on either Netflix or Hulu. I remember seeing it a while back.

Gasp.. you’ve never seen Purple Rain. LOL. It’s on Netflix, check it out. Prince was not the best actor, but the music and story line make up for it. 💜

Thanks, Ninoska! If you love purple you must try MAC Prunella ASAP (if you don’t have it already). It’s a purple must!

My favorite Prince song is 1999. Love the purple and orange combination on you! Also, I remember that it rained here in Kentucky on the day that he died and I saw a double rainbow that evening. Made me think of him.

      Hi Tammy,

I love that song too. Remember Wendy and Lisa from that video? I used to think they were the coolest.

Such a pretty look Karen. I haven’t used purple in quite some time, need to explore the purple shades for spring. I’m a die-hard Prince fan. Purple Rain was an enjoyable movie thanks to the music and storyline and most importantly just to see his gorgeous face on the screen. 😍 A few of favorite Prince songs include Erotic City, The Ladder, Tambourine and Housequake. 💜

This is a great combo and I like both but do agree with you on the matte lip. 🙂 Purple Rain is a great album; I’ve seen the movie but not since it came out so I just remember the high points. HAHA! One of the girls I went to HS with would play Darling Nikki on the bus for every away soccer game. It was quite racy for 9th graders back in the day. I’m sure you can guess her name. 😉

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
