A Warm Neutral Drugstore Makeup Look for Zoom Calls

May 7th, 2020 by Karen 16 Comments

drugstore neutrals
All the makeup I’m wearing in this look is from the drugstore.

I seriously thought about wearing this makeup look for a Zoom call I had with my bakery coworkers a few days ago (we still keep in touch) but decided to wear it with warm neutrals instead.

drugstore neutrals

All drugstore today because I’m on a budget beauty kick! I’m wearing a mix of old faves (a nude Revlon cream eyeshadow palette and Fig eye kajal, Almay eyeshadow and Covergirl Trublend foundation) and some new things I recently found.

Latest drugstore loves

Honest Beauty Tinted Balm in Dragon Fruit: THIS IS SO GOOD! It’s a bright, moisturizing sheer fuchsia balm that doesn’t settle into lip lines (so smooth!). Two-hour wear time, and it’s unflavored and unscented. It’s similar to the very sheer Clinique lipsticks, but at a fraction the price. $8.99 each and comes in bunch of colors.

Covergirl Trulbend Base Business Illuminating: This is a pearly golden pink skin primer you can wear on its own underneath foundation/concealer, or mixed into other base products to sheer them out and give them an opalescent finish, which is what I do. It’s like a more sparkly version of BECCA Backlight. You *will* see the tiniest flecks of golden glitter reflecting off your skin when you wear it, so be prepared for disco fabulousness while you frolic in full sunlight. If you’re indoors, however, it isn’t visible at all from more than a few feet away. $11.49 for a 1-oz. tube.

Covergirl Easy Breezy Brow: I used Clear on the inner part of my brow (which has a good amount of hair) and Medium on the outer part (not so much hair). Both are on the stiffer side of brow gels so your brow hairs won’t move. Medium, a gray brown, is *very* pigmented and not the easiest to control, so use it sparingly. I loooove the Clear, though. It’s comparable to Benefit’s clear brow gel. $9.49 for a 0.16-oz. tube.

Makeup worn in this look

Base: Covergirl Trublend Base Business Skin Primer Illuminated mixed wtih Covergirl Trulend Matte Made in M50 and Covergirl Trublend Undercover Concealer in Golden Honey

Eyes: Covergirl Easy Breezy Brow in Clear (inner part of brow) and Medium (outer part of Brow), Revlon Illuminance Cream Shadow in Not Just Nudes, Almay Eyeshadow in Pure Gold Baby, Revlon 2 in 1 Angled Kajal in Fig, Maybelline the Falsies Mascara

Cheeks: Covergirl Clean Fresh Cream Blush in Butterflies, Maybelline City Bronzer in 300

Lips: Honest Beauty Tinted Balm in Dragon Fruit

What are your drugstore go-to’s at the moment? I’m playing “put all the makeup in my cart” on the Ulta site right now. 🙂

Nail “painting” is easy and fun.

One of Connor’s preschool teachers sent this fun art idea for painting nails! Grab some nail polish (I used quick-drying ones by Sally Hansen), a black marker and a piece of cardboard. Draw hands with nails on cardboard, and then have your “coworker” help you paint them. Or do it yourself. This kept me and CoyCoy entertained a long time.

Some of my hand drawings ended up looking like weird lizard fingers…but she didn’t seem to mind.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I think you would (I totally did, ha ha ha). The hardest part surprisingly is drawing the hands. I don’t know why but the ones I drew ended up looking like lizard hands, or weird mutant hands. LOL!

      I hope you’re having a nice day so far. I just realized it’s Thursday…

Ok, not the April Fool’s Day version of Zoom makeup, heehee….
I find myself turning to drugstore items more, too. I have brand loyalty to MAC but I also know good values from NYX, L’Oreal, and L.A. Girl when I see ’em! 😉
Your nail-painting activity reminds me of the cosmetology boards: (I never ended up taking them but) you had to bring a stuffed glove with press-on nails and demonstrate a manicure on it! The at-home cardboard version I’m sure is a lot less stressful. 🙂

Drugstore has really stepped it up over the last 10 years. I especially appreciate all the color choices for concealer and foundation.

I’m digging into my stash and finding so many budget gems… Just rediscovered a Revlon brow pencil and it’s SO GOOD!

IKR?? I also love the plethora of YTers with medium/warm/olive skin and pigmented lips doing a ton of tutorials using mostly drugstore items. I was never aware of so many great colors, tones, and textures!
Hmm…. I had been looking for a good brow pencil; however, I just purchased MAC Concrete for my brows, but I’ll check out the Revlon if I want an alternative! As a “minimalist,” I never really had multiples of products with similar functions but makeup tutorials have been the most soothing thing for me to watch during lockdown and I’m just all over having lots of options in makeup now. I’m not even wearing makeup at all but WILL I EVER as soon as we can return to society.

OK, my bad, it’s not Revlon. I just double checked and it’s Maybelline! It’s the one in the peach packaging with an angled tip.

Ah, thanks for clarifying! This appears to be the “Maybelline Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil.” Which color do you use, Karen?

I wear Deep Brown. (Here’s the review in case you’re interested.) It’s a nice cool brown that’s got a good amount of gray but it isn’t too gray!

Thanks, Karen. It is the perfect brow color. This is why I went with Concrete instead of Brun, for that cool-tone gray. I like pencils, too, bc my brows are kinda sparse to begin with and I know the wax in the product helps build them up. When I use eyeshadow I set my brows with my husband’s Schwarzkopf “Strandmatte” (surfer hair paste) because it adds that texture and grabs the eyeshadow. Ah, brows, I never used to pay so much attention to them!
Now if I could only get rid of this “maskne!” 🙁

You’re welcome. I hope you love it! It’s one of those hidden gems, IMHO.

Speaking of brows I was recently looking at old pics and WHOA BROWS. Why did I ever think that plucking mine into a pencil thin line was a good idea?!

That tinted lip balm is pretty. I’ve never seen Honest Beauty in any of the local drugstores. My favorite drugstore item will always be Essie gel couture polish and top coat. I also like L’Oreal True Match mineral foundation, although I hate the cheap, scratchy brush that comes with it. Seriously, why do they even bother? I also use L’Oreal brow stylist definer, the one with the thin tip.

What’s the trick to finding the right color of foundation at the drugstore? I wish I knew!

I don’t use drugstore makeup anymore. Of the products I’ve tried, I find their eyeliners and mascara irritate my eyes to no end! And lip products were so grossly/overly scented they made me nauseous to wear. I am faithful to MAC though, and considering how highly priced some drugstore cosmetics are- MAC is the better deal, quality wise. I was in a long rut of wearing no/hardly any makeup for a while there. Feeling down. Yesterday and today are the first time in forever I’m wearing a full face to work. I get treated better by my coworkers!

Wow! Love this look Karen!! 😍😍 You look amazing!! I’m the exact shade match to yours and this is soo helpful! What are your thoughts on the covergirl cream blush and the Almay shadow? Shadows crease on me so I’m so hesitant about Revlon!
I only own Honest Beauty’s cream blushes and I loveee it! Will surely try out the balm!
Thank you and glad to hear you and your family are staying safe!❤️

I have that same Revlon Creme Shadow palette, but I haven’t used it in a minute or two. I’ll have to bust it out now and give it some love.

I was excited to see our beloved LM Caviar Stick Eye Colors featured as one of the top 10 beauty finds of the season in the May edition of Southern Living. (aka the Southern woman’s ‘other’ Bible.) Heard it here first on the Makeup & Beauty Blog!

I need to try that nail painting thing with my daughter, it might distract her from wanting to have her own nais painted.
