Fall-inspired look, TAKE TWO.
I think this one’s a little closer in terms of vibe to the Thanksgiving baking accouterments I found at Michael’s the other day… More fall, and less summer, with shimmery reddish copper lids, bronze cheeks and nude-beige lips.
I wore it to the bakery the other day… The bakery in my kitchen, THAT IS! Had this on while trying to work out the pumpkin/pecan cupcake situation (yes, this is a thing I’m working on). In a nutshell, I think I found a good balance between a spicy pumpkin cupcake, and brown sugar pecans, but that’s a story for another time…
As for this look, here are some things you may find helpful when wearing reddish copper eyeshadow, or really any shadows with red tones:
1. Full-coverage foundations make a HUGE difference
You know me; I like to wear as little as possible in terms of base products, but whenever I try to do minimal foundation/concealer that incorporates any sort of copper, coppery red or red eyeshadow, I look tired, messy and juuuuust not right. Babe, if you’ve got anything remotely red happening on your lids, then go for full-coverage foundation. A full-coverage base balances with the red eyeshadow’s POW! very nicely, methinks.
2. Tightline with a black liner
You need something like a black liner to add a visible “break” or barrier between your red eyeshadow and the whites of your eyes; otherwise, it can look kinda “off.” If black seems too harsh for you, try a dark brown.
3. Do your eye makeup first
Why? Because you want absolutely NO red underneath your lower lash line, and you’ll want to completely remove it before doing your base. Then, after you clean up, apply a concealer. I’m usually team “Skip the Under-Eye Concealer,” but in this case, I’m thoroughly on board, because, again, it can look weird if you skip it.
Makeup worn in this look
- Skin: Kahina Giving Beauty Prickly Pear Seed Oil (the foundation and concealer I’m wearing are full-coverage matte and dry out my skin, so I use this very rich face oil to load up my skin with moisture beforehand.)
- Base: Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Velvety Matte Foundation in Tangier 520 (matte with an ultra flat finish! You’ll love this if you’ve got oily skin, but it can be quite drying on my combo skin, like ESPECIALLY on my cheeks), Juvia’s Place Concealers in 14 and 19 (mixed together)
- Cheeks: MAC Gingerly Blush
- Lips: MAC Whirl Lip Pencil with MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick
- Eyes: MAC Bare Study Paint Pot (base), Viseart Libertine Palette (copper and gold shades on lids), MAC Texture eyeshadow (crease), Cargo black eyeliner, IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, It Cosmetics Brow Power pencil
I hope this inspires you to wear copper or something coppery red sometime! Seriously, copper can be surprisingly wearable.

Karen

Did other people vote for this? Because if they didn’t, I’ll bet they wish they had. HAHA! I love this look and, as you know, am such a sucker for the pinks and reds in eyeshadow. On you, I mean. 🙂 Kidding. It’s my fave shadow color on me, too. Because of the green-eye popping part. I skip all the other good advice (tightline, concealer, full coverage foundation) so mine doesn’t look quite as nice – but I still like it. I’m glad you figured out your cupcake sitch. I’m sure they’ll be a hit.
How’s Rosey Posey settling in?
Karen says
Hi Kim,
Pretty Girl Rosie is doing great. Every day she gets more and more comfortable with us! She even sleeps with us in the bed now every night… Well, that is until 4. At 4 she gets the early morning crazies and starts meowing and zooming around the house.
How are your kitty babies doing?
Kim says
I’m so glad to hear that!! Not about the 4 AM, of course. 🙂 Does Connor sleep with you guys, too? I’m still hoping that she’ll be Rosie’s special human once Rosie is settled!
They are doing well. Our thyroid gal looks like an actual, normal sized, healthy cat so she’s doing great. Big Orange is his usual, vocal self. The only concern is my best girl. She seems thinner and needs a checkup to rule out any issues. She’s about 12 so just hitting her stride, middle age, we think.

What a gorgeous look! I am loving all the tips because I am fair skinned with occasional rosacea flare ups and reds and pinks on the eyes can be a challenge. Looking forward to seeing the cupcake results, and hope you share that recipe with your readers. :::fingers crossed:::

Hi Lorraine,
I will! Today I’m working on the frosting. I’m doing a simple cream cheese one since there’s so much going on with the cupcake base part, ya know? I was thinking of doing a buttercream but with the brown pecans it might be too much…
Anyway, glad you liked these tips. I’ll try to include more in future FOTD posts.
Happy Thursday. 🙂

Yay!!! my mouth is watering for that recipe, and the makeup tips, too! MAC Velvet Teddy looks so right with this, I had to wear it yesterday. I rarely reach for it because I have so many other favorites, but your post reminded me to give it some love. 🙂

You look great Karen! Years ago when MAC released an all red collection, I picked up a single eyeshadow called “Red Alert”. I still haven’t used it, so I need to get cracking. Thanks for these tips 🙂 I shall try it soon.
Karen says
Hi Fieran,
I totally remember that collection and that eye shadow. Do you have MAC Texture? You can blend it into the crease with Red Alert!
Fieran says
Hi Karen. I think so 🙂 I’ll try that for sure. Thank you for always being so encouraging *Hug*.
Karen says
You’re so welcome! I think you can totally pull it off, and if it doesn’t turn out how you want it the first time around, then no worries… You can always wash it off! And there’s always tomorrow, right?
Texture is such a fantastic transition color for any and all of your reds or oranges or coppers, by the way.
Fieran says
I’m not going to lie. It’s been a tough week and your encouraging comments are really making my day.
So true, it can always be washed off and re-done another time.
Ohhh Texture goes with Copper too? I have that Hourglass scattered rays or something in Copper. Thanks Karen 🙂
Karen says
I’m so sorry you’re having a tough week. We’re almost done, so hang in there… The weekend will be with us soon enough. 🙂
And yes, Texture works with copper because of its beautiful orange undertones. Don’t worry if you see a little shimmer in the pan, it basically reads as a matte on skin. There’s shimmer in there, for sure, but it’s SO subtle, and it helps make blending so much easier.

That Libertine Pallette is gorgeous ? I love this look on you! Looking forward to seeing how the cupcakes turn out. Thank you for the truly helpful tips.
Karen says
Isn’t it, though?! I’m a sucker for jewel tones. If you’re a Sephora VIB you should be able to snag it on sale right now!
Lisa says
This look suits you. Looks really good. I’m not sure I can pull it off.
Karen says
Thanks, Lisa. Ya know, I didn’t think I’d be able to pull reds off either, but I’m glad I took a chance. You should give it a go sometime! You just never know if you’ll like it. 🙂
Anne says
It is such a beautiful look, I need to switch my regular brown for a more reddish shade tomorrow.
But tell me more about that cupcake…
