The Urban Decay Cowboy Junkie Shadows and Gloss Set Glitters Like a Starry Night

November 9th, 2010 by Karen 84 Comments

karen of makeup and beauty blog reviews the urban decay cowboy junkie set 1 final

Of course, on the ONE DAY I actually need the only cowboy hat I’ve ever owned, I can’t find it. Welcome to the story of my life. Wherever you are, my beloved black straw cowboy hat, I reckon we would’ve made sweet music together today, taking pictures of ourselves covered in glitter with the new Urban Decay Cowboy Junkie Shadows & Gloss Set ($38).

Yee Haw!

The new set rides into town for the holidays, kicking up glitter in its wake with four powder shadows, a liner and one lonesome lip gloss.

Three members of the set hail from the Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow gang, known for their eye-catching, dramatic glitter.

But this glitter is like dust on a desert trail (gets everywhere). Midnight Cowboy (a gritty, glittery peachy pink), Midnight Cowboy Rides Again (a glittery peachy tan) and Midnight Cowgirl (a glittery gold) leave fallout everywhere — beneath my eyes, around my nose and on my cheeks. Shoot, I even found some on Tabs.

I think if you’re going to try to get behind this set, you just gotta go with the glitter and fallout. Resistance is futile. It’s kinda like the zombie apocalypse that way, I guess.

The only one of the four shadows in the set that doesn’t have big chunks of glitter is purple Romp, but it still shimmers, and, because of its pigmentation and smooth texture, contrasts nicely with the three other more rugged and gritty shades.

Creamy brown Whiskey liner (within the palette) and sheer pink Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Midnight Cowboy (sits in the packaging outside the palette), a sticky gloss with a light minty flavor and scent that produces a mild tingling sensation on the lips, round out the set. Midnight Cowboy’s supposed to plump, but I don’t really notice a difference. I think both products suit the set well, though, even if neither one is particularly memorable on its own.

      LOL, Molly!

I totally feel you on the hot/painful shoe analogy. 😀

I think you might especially dig Midnight Cowgirl — such a beautiful gold!

Have you tried the Lip Junkie glosses before?

There’s too much glitter in this for me. Not a glitter fan 🙁 I love whiskey though. The shade is so pretty. I am planning to get the jackpot set. I know, I am late to get it but do you have any idea until when it’s going to be around? 🙂

Oh, I just got The Jackpot set & I love it. So great for wanting to try a ton of colors without buying all full sized pencils (although I kind of wish they were the bigger mini 24/7 liners). Of the newer colors, I’ve only tried Binge so far & I love it, but Mildew is totally next.

I love everything midnight cowboy. I love to put a little Midnight Cowboy on my eyelid and then do a black cat eye, it puts a nice modern twist on the cat eye. For a night time look I add a little pizazz with Midnight Cowboy Rides Again! Ooh la la!

    P.S

What brush do you like to use with Midnight Cowboy? I’m a flat shadow brush girl myself (seems to reduce the fallout).

        Hey Karen,

I use Mac’s ever so wonderful 239 brush for Midnight Cowboy. I never seem to have a problem with fallout when I use that brush. Plus the use of Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion helps a lot!

Also, it is very important to be ready for the zombie apocalypse. Be prepared! This may help http://www.zombiedefense.org/main/index.html

I looooove that brush! It’s awesome for anything glittery (like MAC pigments and these shadows) because it does a great job of controlling the product. 🙂 Do you ever use it wet? It’s amazing.

And LOL re: Zombie Defense. I’ve actually read the Zombie Survival Guide, but I’m starting to second guess some of the tactics after watching The Walking Dead on AMC. Those zombies can problem solve! Not good for woman-, man- and kitty- kind. 🙁

This kit is not for me. The glittery shades I got in the BOS III are enough to trouble me for a while.

That is my biggest pet peeve with UD shadows — the glitter fallout! One time after I got the Alice palette I decided to bust out a look with it — only to find chunks of glitter all over my face. Gag. I sold the thing! It is too bad, because the colors and pigmentation are great. I just wish they would get that we don’t want glitter chunks all over our faces LOL 🙂

      Hi Michelle,

Aww, bummer that the Alice palette didn’t work for ya. There are some really lovely UD shadows that aren’t a glitter explosion, though, like the ones in the Get Baked from a few years ago. I use that one all the time and have no trubs with the fallout. Dunno if you like warm shades, but you can purchase the shades individual pans:

I do have the UD Naked palette, which I really like (no obvious fallout). Since I am 37 — the worst part of glitter fallout is when it wants to settle into pores and fine lines (yikes!). I’ll have to check out some of those other shades you mentioned!

          Hi Michelle,

All four of colors are really great summer shades. 🙂 Oh, and I forgot to mention that the palette also comes with a liner called Bourbon, which is one of the best (IMHO) 24/7 pencils of all time. Urban Decay sells a full-sized version of it, and it would go fabulously with your Naked Palette. Here’s a quick look at it just in case you’re interested:

While fallout on one’s face is bad, it’s the fallout that lands directly in your eyeball and causes searing pain that I tend to frown most strenuously at. Does no one else find that with glittery shadows/liners? Maybe i just tend to rub my eyes too much in the course of a night…

      Hi Knownever,

I haven’t had the problem; maybe it’s a brush thing? I like to use brushes with densely packed brush heads, like the MAC 239 shadow brush, with glittery products. I think the firmness helps control where the glitter lands.

I have to admit– I don’t understand the whole gritty texture of Cowboy.. or why it’s so popular? UD has a handful of shadows like this, which is a shame, because they can have such a nice texture!! (Smog is my fave, mm!)

It can be annoying, but one way to help minimize it is to do your eyes first, clean up any excess mess, and then do the rest of your face. That’s the order I go in when working with shadows like these.

      You’re so funny!

I had coffee with a friend over the weekend and she was wearing a light sprinkling of this glitter shadow in her under eye area and it looked really beautiful. It was just a lil’ bit of sparkle, but not too much. Maybe try that with one of your glittery shadows? If you have something like a MAC 217 brush you can just lightly dust it on.

I’ve never been able to understand why people like the Midnight Cowboy/girl shadows. I’m a glitter fiend, but I hate those shadows! The glitter fallout is insane – seems to get everywhere but on your eyelid (including IN your eyes, hurray) 😛 I was really happy when I found Too Faced’s Glamazon – it’s a really, really similar shade to Midnight Cowboy (Rides Again), but the silver glitter actually STAYS in the shadow when you apply it! I love the way you put the colors together, though 🙂

Oh, the glitter! Sometimes in the morning I forget which UD shadows in my palettes are glittery, and when I get to work and wake up, it’s like Edward freaking Cullen I’m so sparkly.

LOL, Deb! I kinda wish we could all sparkle like Edward sometimes…

Im with everyone else. HATE THE FALLOUT. these UD palettes suck me in though. I have one, and the only color I never use has insane glitter.

I love those colors so much. And sometimes I really enjoy glitter… but too much is too much if you’re finding it all over Tabs! I guess I’ve finally hit my glitter threshold 🙁 I wish they’d release this palette in a non-sparkly version, because it’s so so pretty otherwise!

*sigh* I love the way Romp looks and I love the new liner shader. I already have everything else in this palette, though. Some I just purchased so I definitely can’t justify an entire palette just for a liner and a new purple shadow. Darn.

Personally, I love the glitter. It’s not a teenagey glitter like some makeup can be. I work in a creative environment so even at 34, it’s nice to be able to have some fun with my makeup if I want to. I have a few of the stardust shadows and love them. I always use eye primer to help trap the glitter and put a tissue under my eye when applying (with a brush!). Then, I find scotch tape helps get the remaining fallout on my cheeks. I don’t usually get any more glitter on me during the day after that.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone could invent glitter that didn’t fall out? I’m not even sure how that would be possible. haha

Love how you used the eyeshadows here, but your face looks so flawless and fresh! What face products did you use?

Why doesn’t Urban Decay have the Whiskey eye pencil available to buy separately? It is my favorite color, real warm brown without sparkle, and I can only get it with in mixed mini pencils kits and now this palette?

I hate glitter fallout! It’s one of my biggest pet peeves with UD palettes! But romp is absolutely gorgeous on your eyes! Is that the only purple you used? I think I’ll just buy the singles for romp.
