Tarte Puttin’ on the Glitz Is Great in a Clutch

November 8th, 2011 by Karen 53 Comments

Indecisiveness doesn’t go well with Tarte’s new holiday kit. Nope, the $48 Puttin’ on the Glitz kit comes with three interchangeable palettes, but you can only fit one of them in the cute silver clutch at a time.

Hmm…

Being a fiend for accessories, my pulse jumped when I heard about this clever limited edition cutie and its 18 powder eyeshadows, highlighter, bronzer and lipgloss. To make it easier to tote the products around (but not all at the same time), Tarte included the clutch, which incorporates a mirror for touch-ups and slots for bills and credit cards. There’s also a tutorial booklet with pretty helpful directions for three different looks.

With these shadows, Tarte was very generous with the pigment; they didn’t hold anything back. The shadow powders feel softer to me, and the colors appear more intense, than the ones in their recent Starlet Makeup Vanity.

While the mattes and shimmers eagerly adhere to my skin, some of the sparkly shades exhibit enough fallout to make using them a challenge. I had to do a LOT of maintenance for the purple smokey look in these pics, and at one point just decided to go with the glittery flow.

I think the light veil of cool pink from the PureOptic gloss draws just enough attention away from the eyes, without throwing the entire look out of whack. And as for the blush, highlighter and bronzer, I like the natural glow each of them delivers, but I think the powders might be a touch too powdery and finely milled.

Overall, I really like this kit, and not just because it comes with a purse. 🙂 The tutorials on the included booklet are refreshingly helpful and easy to follow, and most of the products, with the exception of the sparkliest shadows, seem top notch to me.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. So I learned a valuable lesson about sushi last night after a trip to Trader Joe’s. The lesson: don’t go there. Unless you like gooey rice with little crunchy bits that taste — oh, I don’t know — like sawdust.

Sorry, Joe. For all of your many hits, even you have a few misses.

But on a happy note, the Dark Chocolate stars are back!

YES!

Now all I have to do is exercise some restraint with these…starting tomorrow, LOL!

I hope your Tuesday went well. Anything new to report?

My in-laws just came back from a vacation to Italy…and they made sure they brought me home genuine Swiss dark chocolate! YUM.

…And the hubby thinks I’m going to share it with him. Uh, no. Not happening. Same goes for my limited edition white-fudge covered Oreos!

Okay – can I just give a huge HELL to the YES for the palette design, please? I can’t get past the clunkiness of vanity-style palettes (how is that supposed to be user-friendly?!), but a clutch containing a couple book-like ones – now that’s a train I could get on 😛

Not sure how I feel about the glitter fallout (actually, that’s a lie; I know exactly how I’d feel about it and that is “not good!”) but I do like the design. And those shades! Those SHADES! *flail*

Slots for bills and credit cards… Pure genius!!! This says “yes, Adrienne, it’s totally normal to bring all your makeup with you so you can touch up!!”, which I like to do since I have such oily skin. Now here’s to hoping that the shadows are good enough that you won’t need to touch up, but it’s just great to have them just in case! I like he purples best, I cam already tell you they would hardly leave the case!
I wonder if the powders can take the beating a normal purse takes in a nightclub without crumbling…

      Hi Adrienne,

Hmm, the clutch and the packaging is pretty sturdy, but to be on the safe side, I’d probably limit it to non-dancing nights out — dinners, movies, drinks, that kind of thing.

You’ve got good taste, btw, because I loooove the purples too! 😀

The design and colors in the pan all look very pretty. But the swatches show that the colors are quite chalky and sheer?

No worries! The clear part is just packaging. Most of the tube is dedicated to the clicker-thing-a-ma-jig.

I passed on this one because the highlighter, blush and bronzer all reside on separate palettes. It would have been nicer to split that area into thirds and gave you all three on all three palettes. What good does it do to try and touch up your palette when you have the one with only the bronzer? Otherwise, I am truly a Tartelette as I have about half of what they make. But this was one product I just had no interest in.

It’s a little cheaper if you buy it on QVC.com ($43), but you’ll have to double check with them to see if they ship out to Canada. Here’s a link to their customer service page.

I’ve been eyeing this set ever since it came out. It’s good to hear that this is better pigmented that the holiday set. You just never know with Tarte holiday eyeshadow sets. Well, if it weren’t for your blog I mean ;).
Now I’m not sure if I wanna get this or UD’s 15 Anniversary palette! : / What do you recommend based on eyeshadow quality alone?
One more question: Do the palettes stay closed on their own if they’re not put into the clutch? I hope there’s a magnet to close each one all but I can’t tell.
