Holy Smokes, Is That Strut? Benefit’s New Creaseless Cream Shadow in Holy Smokes Plays Dale to Strut’s Brennan

January 28th, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

Benefit Holy Smokes Creaseless Cream Shadow
The new Benefit Holy Smokes Creaseless Cream Shadow ($19)

For the Bene-babes dabbing daintily at glittery tears while clutching embroidered hankies and waiving a slow, sad farewell as their favorite Creaseless Creme Shadows sail away to the Island of Dr. Moreaus’s Discontinued Beauty Favorites, I have some potentially good news. 🙂

At least one of the colors, Strut, will live on in the newly repackaged Creaseless Cream Shadow line launching this spring.

Remember Strut? The dark shimmery gray has long been a perfect partner in crime for smokey eyes, and it’s not going anywhere, although it has been slightly tweaked with a blink of taupe and given a new moniker: Holy Smokes.

A few days ago, I wore Holy Smokes on one eye and Strut on the other, with Laura Mercier’s Stormy Grey along my water lines (they go together like peanut butter and jelly), and really, I couldn’t tell the difference between them on my lids (unless I looked really close).

Wear time remains solid, as Holy Smokes serenades lids with shimmer from your feline overlord’s first morning mrrrows (“Wake up and feed me, woman!”) till his last late-night pleas for gravy.

Benefit wisely kept the same long-lasting Creaseless Cream formula, so Holy Smokes parties all day and night with hardly any creasing or fading.

Whew! It’s nice knowing that I won’t have to bid farewell forever to Strut anytime soon (even if it is getting a dash of taupe and a name change). I was getting nervous there for a while! 🙂

PRICE: $19

They’re great! Try this shade, Skinny Jeans and Birthday Suit together.

How do you apply the creaseless shadows? I can’t get it to look like that on my eyes!

      Hi Hazel,

I usually use two brushes: a flat eyeshadow brush and a tapered blending brush. I start by applying the color on my lids with the flat brush, and then I blend out the edge with the tapered blending brush. I do a couple layers if I want to build up the color. If I feel like I need more in my crease, I swipe the tapered blending brush across the pan and then sweep it into my crease. Let me know if you have any other application questions!

LOL I love that picture of Tabs! Muffin and Tango meow like there’s no tomorrow when they see a can. I always get so stressed out trying to divide it into their bowls!

Holy Smokes looks interesting for sure! Skinny Jeans looks SO different on you (on me it’s a pewter/khaki, but then again I think there is some olive in my skin tone because whatever can pull green does just that), but I guess that’s what makes this shade such a big hit! It’s a total chameleon!

Wow! How are they when it comes to food? Do they fight and try to eat each other’s meals?

Almost identical – even in the swatches (allowing for lighting). 🙂

I thought of you Sunday night because I FINALLY watched a bit of Step Brothers. I came in during the last half and watched until the end. Lots of funny moments and quotable lines. I’m going to try to catch the whole thing ASAP. 🙂

Sooo, no Hansel & Gretal last weekend, although my brother kept pushing to watch it in 3D. UMMMM…

I can see it becoming like Anchorman, for me (watching it every time it’s on). 🙂

Oh, you know I am a big JR fan, and he’s fun in this and everything, but some parts were super gross for me. And if you have a weak stomach for gore, I think there are quite a few scenes that will have you looking the other way. I’m giving it a “wait for netflix”, despite the shirtless scene. 🙂

I like the name (Holy Smokes). It looks like a great shadow to do an easy and quick smoky eye with. It also sounds awesome with Laura Mercier’s Stormy Gray (my favorite also thanks to you!). Love the pic of Tabs, by the way 🙂

I had a feeling you’d like this. Pop a little MAC Club on top and it’s even more amazing.

I read in the Monday Poll that yesterday was a tough one. Hope today is better for you. 🙂

Very pretty color – the two are nearly identical!

You make me feel like I should be giving Jiji gravy, haha.

i’m scared to attempt eye shadow. after looking/reading this post, i might head to a make up counter so they can school me. i feel like i’m not up to par, like most women. eye shadow looks more polished.

p.s. i LOVE your earrings! where do you find swanky earrings like that?

I love Strut, but mine sadly dried up. I have to get a new one. Drat. I love me Strut.

Sort of sucks they are getting rid of a lot of colors though. There was a beautiful purple that I have that I love (what is it called??? I have to go upstairs and get it. It’s pretty.)

I’ve had Skinny Jeans on stand by for a while….I think I need it now 🙂
P.S. My kitty had the same food dish – unfortunately she got a bit too excited for her tasty treat and knocked it off of the counter. Needless to say, she now has the plastic type bowl 🙂

Holy Smokes looks nice- but I love the cool tones of Strut. Strut is the only one I’ve been able to successfully use as a liner. Maybe time for me to get a backup.
The one I’m curious about is Bronze Have more Fun- looks really like Busy Signal, which looks a lot like a previous incarnation of bronzy brown called Carte Blanche. A lot of us Benebabes are wondering about that one. If you have both, I’d love a comparison, pretty please?

Hi, this is my first time on your website and I really love it! I just have a quick question about this cream eyeshadow. I’m on a bit of a budget but I am loving holy smokes! If you’ve ever tried any of the maybelline color tattoos, is it comparable to the color tattoo in audacious asphalt?

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
