Get the Look for Less: Sonia Kashuk Eye Shadow Duo in Double Whammy

June 3rd, 2008 by Karen 37 Comments

Remember the MAC Cosmetics blue and green face of the day from a few weeks ago? Parrot ($14), a turquoise eyeshadow, and Sprout ($14), a sea green, featured heavily in the look. While I think they’re both fabulous colors, I wanted to find another more budget-friendly option, considering how $28 is a lot to pay for two colors that may not get a lot of regular use. Enter Sonia Kashuk’s Eye Shadow Duo in Double Whammy ($7.99). It offers two very similar blue and green shades for a quarter the price.

In the picture below, that’s Parrot and Sprout in the top row and Sonia’s Double Whammy Eye Shadow Duo on the bottom. Pretty, yah? I think the green in Double Whammy looks a lot like Sprout — they could practically be eyeshadow twins! The blue shade doesn’t exactly match Parrot — it’s more royal blue than turquoise — but it’s still a very pretty color that can be used to duplicate many of the same looks. Texture-wise, Sonia’s duos feel soft to the touch and apply smoothly, too, so they’re not cheap knockoffs by any means.

Here’s the eye map I used to get the look, along with color suggestions!

  1. A neutral, gold-toned eyeshadow on the browbone (I used a gold that was very close to my skin tone)
  2. The green shade from Double Whammy on the inner lid
  3. The blue shade from Double Whammy on the outer lid
  4. Navy blue eyeliner on the outer half of the lash line (if you don’t have navy blue, then go for a black eyeliner)
  5. Gold eyeliner on the lower waterline (if you don’t have gold, try black)

Complete the look with two coats of mascara on your lashes and … tada! You’re out the door.

Don’t you love new looks for the price of lunch? 🙂

I just checked the Target website but couldn’t seem to find Double Whammy. Take a gander in person next time you visit your local Target store. If you’re interested in viewing the other eyeshadow duo shades Sonia has to offer, you can see ’em here.

Well, last night I tried to start packing for my trip but — big surprise — didn’t get far. I took out my luggage from my closet’s nether regions and um, that’s about it. Don’t even get me started on trying to decide what makeup to bring. I guess I’ll try again today.

What’s your day looking like? I hope you have a good one.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Those colors are very pretty. I’m more of a neutrals kind of gal, so blue and green wouldn’t fly in my book!

A day of procrastination unfortunately for me… Pff, I just couldn’t get myself to studying.
And Lotte trying to make me into a Torresfangirl hasn’t helped immensely I must add… Too many distractions.

    That duo looks cute 🙂

Ohhh I’m going to look for those. I like them a lot! If you wet the blue do you think you could use it as an eye liner?

Today is shaping up to be a lot of outside chores. And trying not to think about the poison ivy that randomly sprouted up today on my hand and arm.haha One draw back of living in upstate New York, it’s every where! Have a good Tuesday!

    Hi Karen,
that blue is amazing so highly pigmented! I experimented with a low cost eye shadow duo recently but unfortunately it wasn’t quite as sucessful as this, in fact it felt like chalk on my lids haha! I think im going to stick to Chanel and MAC in the future, I just dont think im the experimenting type!

In other news I have finished my degree wooooo 🙂 I am celebrating by having a much needed clean up of my room and treating my skin to a pampering and false tan! Im also making the longest makeup shopping list in the world ready for friday 🙂 Any reconmendations would be welcome as im going to a place where I can get lots of different more unusual brands!

Very pretty Karen… I saw these at Target the other day, but didn’t pick any up…I bought a hat for a beach… The boots line has some similar colors that are nice quality too btw.

    Hi Heidi,

I wear a lot of neutrals, too, and have only been recently trying out other types of color. You should try blue or green sometime! If you don’t like it you can always wash it off. 🙂

Hope you’re having a great Tuesday!

    Hi Karen B.,

Ahh, I remember the feeling of needing to study and the accompanying temptation of procrastination very well! 🙂 If all else fails there’s always makeup bribery!

I’ve been procrastinating for the last 20 minutes or so. I’ve been listening to old Elton John songs, LOL (“B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets!”) instead of writing.

    Hi Holly,

SWEET! A big congrats to you, girl! I’m really happy for you and proud of you. Now if you could just get that room cleaned! J/K!

Friday sounds like it’s going to be so much fun. 🙂 What’s on your list so far? Seriously, share! I’ll take a look and try to throw in anything I think might be missing. 🙂

    Hi Megan,

Oh! I have to try the Boots stuff one of these days. You just reminded me, I need to get a hat for the beach. I have a straw cowboy hat and while it’s cute it’s not exactly the most efficient hat when it comes to sun protection.

    Hi Bridget,

Yes, you can totally do that. Or, you can wet it and wear it to up the shadow’s intensity.

Yow! Poison Ivy! Leaves of three, leave it be… That plant is all over the trails here, too. Just looking at it makes me itchy.

Have fun doing outside chores. I’ll be sitting on my butt in the office all afternoon. Want to trade? 😉

LOL… don’t try to blame me when you overpack 😉 LOL… yeah I think the one I got at Target was like $12.99 or something. They have some cute ones…and they’re collapsible/packable. You could also buy something when you get there too.

amazon has some cute ones too… I was just worried about how they would fit…thus the target purchase 🙂

HA! I know, I know! This is what always happens… I know I need just one beach hat, but somehow I end up bringing three. I like to have choices! At least that’s my excuse. I’ll probably end up buying one when I’m there. 🙂

Girl, I’m on amazon like every other day. The have a program called amazon prime where you can get expedited shipping if you pay a flat yearly rate up front. Everything within 1-2 days. It’s awesome and dangerous at the same time, LOL.

Girl… I did a free trial of Amazon prime a couple years back…let me just say my amazon spending skyrocketed. VERY DANGEROUS!!! LOL my nephew’s birthday… ship it to him, I need something random…I order it…Christmas…I went nuts…seriously. It’s way too tempting all the time. I cancelled it when the trial was up. I thought about buying it last year…but convinced myself it would make it too easy to spend money all the time 🙂

    Hi Megan,

LOL, apparently you can feel my pain! What makes it worse is that you can practically buy everything on that website now, too. Some Bumble & Bumble Super Rich? No prob! Need a new computer? Vitamins? It’s there in two days! It’s not exactly instant gratification but it comes pretty damn close.

Oh my gosh, Karen – that would totally fit in with my new deal of trying bright colors! I was just at Target at lunch and didn’t even look at her shadows, as I was distracted to actually find one of her blending sponges, that I grabbed like a kid on Halloween! I now I have another reason to go back (like I need another one). LOL

Those are such pretty colors! Will those be coming with you on your trip? I totally feel you with the packing – I *hate* having to pack, even if it’s just for a weekend with my parents, so g’luck with it all. 🙂

Also, I kind of caved off of my budget and went out and bought Mac’s Viva Glam VI Lipglass. It’s gonna cost me at least one dinner, but it’s so gorgeous, it’s hard to feel bad! 😀

Okay, Karen – I went back to Target.
I had the Sonia palette in my hand, but then I passed by the summer Cover Girl display and saw colors that matched what I was holding. The “Kaboom Kelly” and “Indigo Impact” are sister colors, so very close. AND they were on sale for $2.86 each, so, I bent and picked up “Turquoise Tempest” to go along, as it looks so good with the blue, too.
I will send you a pic so you can compare them, as I can’t find an image online – plus it gives me a chance to send you a pic of what I did with bright, fun nailpolish. 🙂

    Hey Karen,

Actually, I grabbed a few of those microwave pasta dinners :P. So worth it! This is the longest wearing gloss I’ve ever had. I actually will be enjoying those for a while, I’m going back for brush cleaner, later. 😀

I can’t wait to see the final vacation make-up list! Any luck with the packing?

    Hi Holly,

WOW! I can’t wait to see your much-deserved haul. 🙂

Okay, hmm, for the lipbrush I have the MAC 316 covered lip brush. It is also a *great* brush for use with the Fluidlines. 🙂

For neutral Paint Pots I like Bare Study and Indian Wood (SOO PRETTY). I like Perky underneath coral colors and Girl Friendly under pinks (dunno if GF will still be available, though). Moss Scape is also very pretty if you like to wear greens!

Oh! For NARS blush check out Amour and Deep Throat! Dunno if Torrid will be to dark on you, but it’s very pretty too.

Bumble & Bumble — My colored, dry hair can’t live without Super Rich Conditioner and Gentle Shampoo! They also have a new hair mask called Creme De Coco that’s supposed to be for adding softness and gloss to hair. I’m going to try it soon (hopefully tomorrow!).

Have fun hauling! You’ve worked so hard so you totally deserve to go a lil’ nuts. 🙂

Ah yes, I know how that is. I would do microwave pasta for a few days for some makeup, for sure. 🙂

Did ya know that you can use those Brush Cleaner bottles for the Back to MAC program?

Oy. No improvement on the packing front. True to my procrastination roots, I am going to do it tomorrow. 🙂

I bought Sonia Kashuk Enhance Eye Shadow in Sand – 49 Matte. I loved the color, but it would not stay on my lids! I use a FABULOUS eye shadow primer, Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion, so I know that’s not the problem. I use Revlon and Loreal eye shadows that stay in place all day. I was not impressed with this product and won’t be buying more.
