Everything’s Coming Up Denim & Roses for Bobbi Brown’s Latest Fall Palette

June 23rd, 2010 by Karen 51 Comments

Dear Bobbi Brown,

I’m not a crazy fan or anything, but I’ve often wondered if we share a psychic connection. You see, I used to have a picture of Bobby Brown on my algebra folder — I KNOW! What a coincidence, right? Oh, and just last week I spent 15 minutes rifling through my eyeshadow collection, looking for the perfect combo of gray and navy shadows to wear with my new dark rinse J Brand jeans, and now you go and release a jeans-inspired palette for fall called Denim & Rose ($60)? Are you reading my makeup mind??

Much love,

Karen

Right after trying on the new Denim & Rose palette, I peeled off my stretchy yoga pants (which were starting to meld into my thighs) and squeezed into my favorite skinny jeans because it just felt right. 🙂

It’s rock n’ roll meets roses today with this palette for sooty, smokey eyes (for your inner bad gal) and soft lips and cheeks (for your angelic side). I LOVE the mix of edgy — well, edgy for Bobbi — dark navy, gray and neutral shades for the eyes, and the ultra femme pinks for lips and cheeks.

The nine-piece palette rides onto counters next month as part of the Denim & Rose makeup collection for fall 2010, and most of its colors are new. The sole exception, Navajo eyeshadow, also stars in Bobbi’s permanent collection.

I really appreciate when makeup lines create palettes from scratch with fresh colors, rather than recycling stuff that’s already part of their permanent line. I don’t mind occasional re-promotes, but big ups to BB and her crew for keeping us on our toes.

So tell me about the packaging. Doesn’t the dark denim case with its zipper closure look totally unlike Bobbi’s typical black lacquer? It’s sassy and almost MAC-like, yah? I kinda wish they’d separated the lip products from the eyeshadows (argh!), though, to help keep dust from getting where it doesn’t belong.

If you decide to get frisky with this palette, please check out Dark Rinse shadow, the inky blackish blue with flecks of glitter, and if you happen to have last fall’s Declaring Indigo Gel Liner from Lancome, I have a feeling Dark Rinse would look amazing layered on top!

Swatches from left: Navajo Eye Shadow (repromote), Gray Denim Eye Shadow (new), Pink Granite Sparkle Eye Shadow (new), Dark Rinse Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow (new), Pink Rose Blush (new), Cool Rose Creamy Lip Color (new), Indie Rose Creamy Lip Color (new), Iced Lilac Glitter Lip Gloss (new), Hot Rose Lip Gloss (new)

For these shots I used all four Denim & Rose palette eyeshadows, Pink Rose blush on the cheeks and Indie Rose Creamy Lip Color/Hot Rose Lip Gloss on the lips. The matte eyeshadows, Navajo and Gray Denim, were a bit of a challenge to blend, but I think a different base might help (I used Urban Decay Eden). Next time I might try using Shore from Bobbi’s Beach Club collection.

The Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose fall 2010 collection

  • Denim & Rose Palette ($60)
  • Highlighter Pen in Bronze, Opal and Rose ($32 each)
  • Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Denim Ink ($21)
  • Sparkle Eye Shadow in Denim ($24)
  • Extreme Party Mascara in Denim ($22)
  • Shimmer Lip Gloss in Raspberry ($20)
  • Denim & Rose Mini Brush Set ($55)

I think if Denim & Rose were an outfit, she’d be a form fitting pair of dark rinse skinny jeans worn with a crisp white shirt and stilettos.

Despite issues with the pans being too close together and the $60 price, I can’t wait to take these colors for a date night ride. Available next month at Bobbi Brown counters and online at bobbibrowncosmetics.com. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+/A-

You might like the Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Palette if…

  • You love the look of dark blue smokey eyes
  • Your cheeks and lips look fab in rose
  • You like funky packaging and don’t mind occasional product cross-polination

Neighborhood watch

Holy crap, ladies! There was some drama next door a little while ago. Apparently, my neighbor’s house caught on fire! I was sitting at my computer just typing away when I heard sirens approaching, so I looked and saw smoke streaming out from my neighbor’s kitchen window, no more than 30 feet away!

Next thing I knew, there were firemen on the roof, water and chainsaws roaring… I was FREAKED OUT! As far as I can tell and from what the firemen have said, there was no one inside the unit at the time, so that’s the most important thing. Trust me, though, I was ready to grab Tabs, a pair of running shoes and fly out the door!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

You look absolutely gorgeous in those colors and all those layered pearls over the gossamer top is sheer perfection. Wow!

But now I have a couple of Dear Bobby questions: What were you thinking when you put cream products in the same palette as powders without any way of protecting one from the other? You know that is a mess waiting to happen. As for the palette itself, the zipper is mighty cute, but zipping around all the corners is going to get old real fast. And how are you supposed to clean the darn thing? Sorry to be such a killjoy, but . . .

Regarding the texture of BB’s matte shadows, is it just me or have they become more chalky lately? I recently returned two old standbyes because the texture looked flat and dry on the lids and I use a very good, moisturizing eye primer (Kanebo Sansai). Sorry for the rant. 🙁

One easy way to start experimenting with shadow is to layer it on top of your liner. It’s a quick way to get a smokey look!

I really love the way the colors look on you, stunning. I think that the colors may be a little light for me. I wish they sold that blue shadow separate, that would be am awesome liner, by itself or over MAC smoulder or Bobbi`s black ink gel liner. I brought the Denim ink gel eyeliner from this collection and it is deep and rich…beautiful. I am becoming a big BB fan, that beach sb and bronzer have won me over.

That is one of the prettiest looks I’ve ever seen on you, Karen…seriously, that palette is just made for you. The lip color is so unexpectedly demure and fresh with the smoky eye. I don’t know how you manage to get such gorgeous color with your smoky eye look without going overboard and looking harsh. I have brown eyes (somewhat lighter than yours) and anything darker than a bronze just looks hard on me. What’s your secret??

I love BB and LOVE this combo, but also worry about the fallout from the powders onto the creams. Although, I have other BB palettes with no problems like that, but there’s separation between the two.
