Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion Oil and Salt-Infused Spray Waves Hello to Volume and Goodbye to Crispy Hair

June 22nd, 2015 by Karen 28 Comments

Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion oil and salt-infused spray for soft, touchable waves

I love beachy wave sprays, but I do NOT love that crispy thing that many of them do to mah hurr.

Beachy waves = yes. Crunchy hair = nooo.

Apparently, I am not alone in this tale of beachy woe because Bumble and Bumble whipped up a solution. Their new Surf Infusion oil and sale-infused spray coaxes coifs into shiny, beachy waves without “dat crunchy feeling.” This is compared to most of the beachy wave sprays I’ve tried, which leave behind a matte finish and hair that feels a tad gritty.

A styling spray for body, texture and shine, Surf Infusion contains a combination of sea salt and various oils, including coconut, mango seed, passion fruit and palm. It also contains sun-protecting UV inhibitors.

Just shake the bottle and spray evenly onto damp or dry hair, concentrating around the middle of the hair shaft and the ends. Then allow it to dry.

Also, if you scrunch the ends of your hair up, you can create even more volume and movement (that’s what I do).

My stylist buddy Alis turned me on to this stuff last week at dinner when, as usual, the conversation detoured into hair products. She raved about it and said, “You have to try it,” so I went to Sephora to get a bottle the next day.

Why you so small?!

I was kind of put off by the size of the 3.4-oz. $29 bottle, but hope prevailed! — I got it anyway. I have fairly thick hair that goes down to just below my shoulders, and I know that there’s just no way this bottle will last as long as Kerastase Spray a Porter (which gets you 5.4 ounces for $36), which I flat-out love (it’s what I usually bring with me on trips), but the Kerastase spray creates a flatter finish.

So shiny and beachy, yo!

The thing is, Surf Infusion rocks. It has similarly great hold and beachy wave powers as Kerastase Spray a Porter, but when I use it my hair feels a bit softer and definitely looks shinier.

And I love, love, LOVE the volume I get with Surf Infusion, because it keeps the middle area of my ‘do, which is where my hair always wants to go pancake flat, all puffy and perky. It really is a great hair day in a bottle.

And the scent! Oh, the scent… Like lemonade and iced tea. I can’t stop sniffing my hair. 🙂

I keep telling myself, “You don’t need to get addicted to this. Karen, you DO NOT need to get addicted to this,” but sadly that ship has already sailed off into a shiny, voluminous sunset of beachy waves.

It’s too late. I’m hooked.

Why, oh why, isn’t the bottle bigger?? YOU’RE KILLING ME, SMALLS.

PRICE: $29 for a 3.4-oz. bottle
AVAILABILITY: Available now at salons, Bumble and Bumble counters, Sephora and online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A- (a solid A+ if it came in a bigger bottle for the same price)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Is your hair naturally straight, Karen? I’m guessing something like this wouldn’t be great on naturally curly hair, but that’s just based on assumption. I love the way beachy waves look, but I don’t want to buy a product to straighten my hair and be like ‘YESSS BEACHY WAVE TIME’ and then it just makes my hair straight and frizzy.

Karen, your hair is stunning. I have tried this product without the same effect (sadly), but WOW….your hair is just gorgeous.

Seriously, you become more and more gorgeous in every pic. You are seriously a beautiful woman…inside and out!

I love these types of sprays, but I have thick, long, wavy/curly hair that is frizzier this summer than Ronald McDonald. Would this be a no no for my unmanageable hair? I have to keep it long just to weigh it down. Winter and my hair are BFFs!

      You’re so sweet, Lauren! 🙂

This product will add a little weight, but not as much as a styling cream or gel. You’d probably have to combine it with something.

Hmm, have you ever tried braiding your hair after you wash it and then letting the braid air dry? I do that sometimes and it helps to tame the frizz.

Good luck! Sometimes I find that it helps to put a little leave in conditioner or a styling product before hand. And oh! Changing up the thickness of the braid will give you different wave effects, so do some experimenting. When you take it out, gently run your fingers through the waves to loosen them. 🙂

Let me know how it goes, and if you have any trubs, also let me know, so we can brainstorm some ideas.

Any idea if the palm oil is sustainably grown? Palm oil is the #1 cause of rainforest destruction and animal habitat removal. There are less than 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild due to habitat loss, Palm oil production, many poaching and since I work with Asian species, I try and buy products and support companies that are helping making a change to RSPO Palm oil.

      Hi Lauren,

I’m not sure. You can contact Bumble and Bumble online to ask; they have a contact section under “need help?” which is located in the upper right. You can get in touch with them via live chat, live photo chat and email:

      http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/14996/35641/Products/HPMUSTHAVES/surf-infusion/index.tmpl

Also, thank you for the information. I didn’t know that about palm oil.

Thanks for the direction Karen! and thanks for caring too! It’s hard to shop sustainable since palm oil is in everything practically (toothpaste, shampoo, food, hair products, makeup, etc.) but there are some big companies like Starbucks who have made the commitment to using only sustainable palm oil!

you can always learn more if you’re interested at rspo.org and you can even search for companies on there to see if they source sustainable palm oil!

How would you compare this version to their original surf spray? The original version makes my hair gummy and tangled, and like I haven’t washed my hair in 3 weeks. 🙁 I have a bottle of the Spray-a-porter too, but find myself rarely using it, because it makes my hair so crunchy.

Have you tried B&B’s new Don’t Blow it H(air) styler cream? It is awesome. A perfect mixture of hydrating cream, gel, and shine. I bought the little tiny tube at Sephora and am busy trying to repeat the same mantra of addiction curbing, lol.

      Hi Amanda,

I like this better than the original Surf Spray. It’s shinier and softer. I’ve used the original before and prefer this one.

And thanks for the rec! I rarely blow my hair dry but it might come in handy for those rare times. 🙂

The Don’t blow it styler is specifically for air-dry styling! You just put it in damp hair and no dryer needed. It is pretty awesome, check it out when you can. 🙂

Hi Karen! Your hair looks so beautiful. Can you explain how you styled your hair with this product? Did you apply it to wet or dry hair? Thanks!

      Hi Shora,

I used it on dry hair, although it works on wet hair too. I washed my hair the night before, went to sleep with it a little damp, and then in the morning I gently ran my fingers through it. Then I used a curling iron to curl a few pieces. After that, I sprayed it with Surf Infusion from the mid-shaft to the ends. And that was that. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

Oh, I like that! I’m not sure it’s as shine or volume producing but I like Olivine Into The Waves spray. It’s pink salt and coconut oil. If you get to Anthro anytime soon, give it a spritz!

I have this new Surf Spray too and I really like it! Better than the original for my fine, color-treated, slightly wavy hair. The original formula made my hair feel very crunchy and very dry. This stuff doesn’t. Now, I do wish I’d get a smidge more volume out of it, but the small amount of oil in it is just what I need to keep the frizz and crunch down. I’ve been using this a lot lately on damp hair, then letting it dry naturally (too hot for the blow dryer!!) and it’s working nicely. Come to think of it, if I blew dry my hair with it I bet I’d get that extra volume I’m craving. No matter…I like it!!!

    DAT VOLUME! :-O

I am so jealous. Seriously, I could spray that whole bottle in my hair and my hair would still be flat! Still, I’m tempted to give it a try though. I’ll take any extra volume I can get.

I have always been sooo tempted to buy that, but I never have. Mostly because of price and size. Sea salt sprays are one of my kryptonites (I have several, lol), right now I’m using Not My Mother’s sea salt spray and cream. I heard John Frieda re-released his sea salt/beach spray which apparently is supposed to be amazing and was a HG product until it was discontinued a few years ago. I’ve seen the John Frieda sea salt shampoo & conditioner at Ulta but I have yet to track down the spray. :/

Your hair looks gorgeous. I’ve been searching for salt sprays, as I’m increasingly finding my hair getting greasy and other products are just adding to that fact. I’ll have to check this one out. Thanks Heroine In Heels
