Aren’t the New Rouge G de Guerlain Serie Noire Lipstick Compacts Serie-ously Cute?

March 15th, 2011 by Karen 70 Comments

Rouge G de Guerlain Serie Noire Jewel Lipstick Compact

Right now it’s raining like the powers that be left the shower on upstairs, but I’m not letting the wet weather get me down. Assisting me today in my pursuit of perkiness are this hot pink ribbon…

tabs wearing a pink ribbon

…and Tabs, who sent me the following text from his iPhone.

Woman, I’m in the mood for something bright. Tie this thing around my neck before I swipe your ankles.

Love ya,
Tabs

P.S. Real cats wear pink.

I usually just roll my eyes and click DELETE when he sends me crazy texts like this one…from upstairs, but I derive great joy from seeing him bop around the house in bright colors, so I was happy to oblige.

Doesn’t the ribbon go well with these bright new Rouge G de Guerlain Serie Noire Jewel Lipstick Compacts ($46 each)? They’re part of a new four-piece limited edition lipstick line released for spring.

What do ya think of the black lacquer compact? Pretty sleek, right? Each one holds one tube. Guerlain did that special for this release.

The Serie Noire lipsticks themselves shine much like the lippies from Guerlain’s original Rouge G line do, but I think they’re sheerer and not quite as opaque. They do layer well, though, so if you crave more pigment from them, you could always add a layer or two.

Also like the O.G. Rouge G’s, they feel smooth on my lips, but I think they’re lighter and not quite as dense. They remind me of the lipstick/gloss hybrids that have been cropping up over the past few years (like the JK Jemma Kidd Hi-Shine Gloss Sticks and the discontinued MAC Slimshines).

Guerlain gave them something they call “precious ruby powder,” or “PRECIOUS RUBY POWDER!!!” LOL! I think it just looks better in all caps. 🙂 It’s supposed to make them look extra radiant in daylight. Since it’s been so overcast outside, I can’t really tell if they’re working, but I do think my lips look smooth and slightly plumper than they did a few minutes ago. It might have something to do with the finish.

Additional makeup worn in this look: Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in Samba-dy Loves Me, Laura Mercier Eye Kohl in Stormy Grey, Benefit Instant Brow in Medium, NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and Panthera Mascara on eyes; Benefit Sugarbomb Blush on cheeks.

I feel kinda fancy with one of these in my purse. With springy colors and cool packaging, they only seem moderately overpriced (they’re $46 a pop!). I find myself having to do touchups a bit more often with them than I’d like (they only last about two hours on my lips), but at least the mirror in the compact makes those touchups easy to do.

PRICE: $46
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sephora, Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman stores, and also online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+ (an A if they were cheaper)

Latest Trader Joe’s obsession

trader joes pita bite crackers

I brought this box of Pita Bite Crackers home from Trader Joe’s last Sunday, and I kid you not — it took all my willpower not to finish the whole thing in one sitting.

They’re these itty bitty baked rounds of pita bread with sea salt sprinkled on top. YUM! I bet they’d go great with cheese or dip, but I believe I shall devour this particular box au naturel.

It’s that dang crunch that makes them so addictive… I might even brave the rain tonight to get another box. 🙂

Have you tried them yet? Please say yes!

Karen

Love both shades, but don’t think I could handle dropping that kind of cash on a lipstick 🙁

I think it’s a pre-requisite for all TJ’s parking lots to be a HOT MESS. There’s always people wandering around not paying attention, cars moving really slowly and just general confusion all around.

Haha my TJs don’t have parking lots. But if you go on the weekends you get 800 NYU kids lined up just to get INTO the store. It’s a mess there.

            The crackers sound delightful.

It gets dark here but not too dark in the daytime. The light’s nice here, but it’s REALLY nice in Napa Valley, which is a stone’s throw away. It’s buttery and golden in the spring and summer.

      Hi Mahnaz,

It took a few tries with Panthera (the brush is kinda tricky) but I’m glad I eventually figured out a system that works for me. How do you use the brush? I do one or two layers with the short stubs, and then follow it up with a layer applied with the longer bristles.

  12. mahnaz says

    March 15th, 2011 at 8:52 pm

lol i don’t think i thought about it that much, i mean the brush and it’s various bristles. I just wiggled it in and didn’t get any volume or extraordinary length. I think so far, the best mascara i have used is maybelline falsies. My lashes looking amazingly long and thick enough…I always get a ton of compliments BUT it kind of flakes after a few hours of wear which I am not in love with.

Have you heard about the fairy drops at all? Haven’t tried it yet!

That compact is sweet and definitely the price-driver for the lipstick. 🙂 I actually have tried the Pita Bite Crackers and they’re yummy. We don’t have a Trader Joe’s but at xmas time, one of our sales reps in NYC sends the office a care package of tons of TJ’s stuff and, this year, it included the Pita Crackers. And, on a side note, that little box is only 6 oz. It’s barely enough to fit in your back tooth! Eating it all in one sitting is completely acceptable. 😉

I’m so sad that these lipsticks are so sheer and glossy. I love the fuschia colour and the packaging, but like a much more dense texture in a lipstick and can’t justify paying $46 for a pretty case. Have you tried the regular rouge g’s? I really want one but didn’t like the original kisskiss lipsticks (too slippery) and am afraid those would be the same way! What do you think? I’m fond of lipstick formulas more like the Chanel Rouge Allures.
