What’s Your Favorite High Gloss Mascara?

April 30th, 2009 by Karen 13 Comments

whats your favorite glossy mascara

Can I get a show of hands from the mascara-obsessed girls out there?

(raises hand)

Yep, few things in life bring me as much joy as a true black mascara. 🙂

MBB reader Hafsa is looking for mascara recommendations, and I’m hoping we can help her out.

Hi Karen,

I’m an avid reader of your blog and love your reviews. I read your review a while back about Lancome’s Definicils, and I couldn’t agree more — love the gloss, hate the clump.

So that brings me to my question: is there a similar product, either Lancome or another company, that gives that high gloss finish but isn’t clumping? For reference, I have pretty long lashes, so clumping happens pretty easily. 🙂 Thank you so much. Any advice is appreciated!

What’s up, Hafsa! One of my favorite high gloss mascaras is fairly new. It’s by Clinique and was released this spring. It’s called High Impact Curling Mascara ($14).

It does EVERYTHING — separates, thickens and lengthens — all while delivering loads of rich, glossy color (without the clumping). All that, and it holds a curl like a mo’ fo’!

Gloss is one of the things I look for in a mascara, and High Impact Curling mascara coats lashes with a shiny, almost wet finish. I’ve been using it a ton for the past few months and like it a lot.

You might also try Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Mascara ($20) and Tarte Lights, Camera Lashes ($18). I like both of them, too.

And if you’re looking for a high gloss waterproof mascara, check out Stila Lash Visor ($12.50). I must sound like a broken record recommending it all the time, but I think it’s a fabulous mascara for the price.

Girls, do you have any glossy lash love suggestions for Hafsa? Please share your ideas in the comments.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

My favourite black mascara has to be Chanel Inimitable. It applies completely clump free and stays on all day. However I have found the waterproof version does tend flake throughout the day but the original one is fab!

I hear you, Hafsa! I have long lashes, and finding a mascara that separates without clumping is my quest!

The best mascaras I tried were Lancome Hypnose, Maybelline Full&Soft, Rimmel (the red tube, can’t remember the name) and the new Body Shop one. But the BEST I’ve ever had, by far, is Max Factor’s Max Masterpiece. Max’s 2000 Calories works great in thickening short lashes, but if you have long lashes try the Masterpiece one. It’s ah-ma-zing, I couldn’t believe it when I first put it on! Plus the end of the wand is slightly curbed, so it grasps the lashes in the corner of the eye and makes your eyes look much wider. (I’ve just bought their new mascara today but haven’t tried it yet)

Sorry I always get very excited talking about that mascara. 😀

Thank you everyone (esp Karen, for putting my question out there!) I shall be looking into the recommendations 🙂

I should mention that I’ve recently tried a new mascara, it’s Givenchy’s Eye Fly. Let me tell you long-lashed ladies out there, this mascara gives me the FALSE LASH effect. NO JOKE. I wore it one day and a friend of mine would not believe me when I told her my eye lashes were real, she was convinced I was lying to her! Now this mascara may not be the glossy kind that I was looking for, but DANG, it works!

Mizz Karen, if you’d like, I could do a review on it as a guest blog? what say you?

    Thank you again ladies!

Ohh these are great recommendations. I don’t have any input because I, too, get lost when it comes to mascara. Clumping is my enemy. I will try these products. Thanks!

The best mascara I’ve used to date and inexpensive is Loreal’s Volumunous in Blackest Black…..no clumps, lashes look separated, full and long….amazing!!

I used to love DiorShow, but I have found a much cheaper one that I believe works better. It’s Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto. I have recommended it to a couple of friends and they all love it too. I’m not usually one for drugstore makeup, but it really is a great product.

I’ve been whoring it with mascara lately, trying almost every new thing that’s come out. Haha! I’ll have to add this one to my list.

      Hi Lehea,

HA! You and me both. Which ones have you be wearing? I’m going back and for between a few Clinique ones…

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
