The MAC Fall Colour Collection Makes It Easy to Smile for the Camera

September 9th, 2011 by Karen 85 Comments

mac fall colour collection

Photography geek alert! Everyone please remain calm, but this is kind of a big deal, especially if you’re a fellow photography geek and/or major MAC fan.

When I heard a while back that acclaimed New York photographer Cindy Sherman was going to be taking pics for the new MAC Fall Colour collection, I nearly dropped my DSLR!

Sherman’s probably best known for her self-portraits, where she gets into a specific character and does the whole kit and caboodle herself — everything from her own makeup, to styling, to modeling for the shoots and, of course, taking her own pics — and her work often tackles topics like women in society, media and art.

FUN FACT: Last May, Untitled $#96, a Cindy Sherman original, sold for $3.8 million, making it the world’s most valuable photograph.

Cindy’s pics for the collection look kinda kooky and fun, don’t ya think? A great fit for a brand like MAC.

Coming to counters, stores and online September 29 in North America and internationally this October, MAC Fall Colour features new and repromoted makeup and brushes for eyes, lips, cheeks and face. It’s a pretty hefty release, with 48 pieces spread out among three sub-collections — the first features dark, smoky colors; the second spotlights a bevy of brights; and the third directs our attention to soft neutrals.

I took a look at 8 of the 48 pieces yesterday afternoon — before the server took a nap — and so far I’m really loving the lipsticks and Mineralize Skinfinishes.

mac fall colour collection all

The Lipsticks in bright Neon Orange, vivid pink Show Orchid and bright coral Fusion Pink all come in MAC’s Amplified finish, which is one of my favorite lipstick finishes from the line. These particular shades are intensely pigmented and advertise a subtle sheen. Their color lasts for hours, too, yet they don’t dry out my lips, as many other long-wearing lipsticks do.

Simply put, if you’re trying to get someone’s attention, you’ll get it with any of these shades.

Lightscapade (the soft candlelit beige) and Porcelain Pink (the soft pinky coral) bestow a soft, gentle glow to my skin. I like both of them, but dynamic Porcelain Pink is probably my fave between the two. It appears to shift from pink to coral to gold, depending on the light, and I bet it would look brilliant paired up with peach, pink and coral lipsticks and glosses (can’t wait to see what it looks like with MAC Evolution Revolution). 🙂

Have a look at a few pics and swatches here, and let me know what ya think.

P.S. TGIF!

P.P.S. I’m glad to report that the server’s firing on all cylinders again and that the missing posts have been restored, but we did lose some of our comments (ones left between 9/5 – 9/8). I apologize for that, but these things do happen from time to time. Luckily, not that often.

Orange Tempera is calling to me, but I already have Porcelain Pink and Lighscapade MSF’s, so I don’t know if I’ll end up with much of a haul from this collex. But, I’m going to an event at my MAC store on the 20th, so I’m sure I’ll be seduced by all the products when I see them in person 🙂

      Hi Cathy,

I totally know what you mean. Before I go to those events I usually make a to-buy list… I try to stick to it but I never do, LOL!

What do you think of the Fluidline? It’s another one of my favorites from this one so far.

Can’t wait for this. Loving the look of Ash Violet. I’m surprisingly not interested in the lipsticks. Bright pinks somehow manage to look awful on me and I’m kinda orange-d out.

Also — what brush do you use to apply your Fluidlines?

I have a feeling the MSF’s are gonna be sold out super fast! They’re so gorge! I have Show Orchid (when it was released with a previous collection) and it’s pretty amazing. I sometimes mix it with MAC Red to make it a bit more fuschia, since Show Orchid has some pretty strong blue undertones (at least on my cooler-toned skin).

Gee, the colors are to die for, but the makeup on Cindy, a butch work. Too much foundation, I see where they were going with the black contouring but not blended, anyway, bad !

Cindy Sherman is my idol, so in love with her. She’s not using make up to be ‘pretty’, but to become another person. She just so fully embodies every persona. I must buy from this collection on art principle alone. Even my non-make up loving art friends are excited about this.

    Hey Karen,

Was one of the colors in that quad really that bad? It looks like it hardly left color at all! Was that the navy? If so, that was the one I was really excited about 🙁

I was trying my best to stay away from limited edition in MAC because I know once they are gone they are gone. But I found out that Fusion Pink can be found through MAC Pro alas I am not a makeup artist. Yet you manage to convince to get me a limited edition shade… fusion pink will be my hot pink.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
