MAC Pro Longlash Mascara for a Flirty Fringe in a Flash

May 20th, 2010 by Karen 24 Comments

mac pro longlash review
Look, ma… mad fringe!

In one way, MAC mascaras are like Speidi — they tend to get mixed reviews. Some people love ’em; others, not so much.

I’ve been in the love-’em camp for a while because I’ve had great luck with the last few I’ve tried, most notably Opulash, and more recently Pro Longlash ($13), which I’ve affectionately dubbed “The Flash.”

And like the comic hero, Pro Longlash works f a s t , delivering long, glossy lashes in a few quick swipes.

It’s been around for a while as part of the MAC permanent line and comes in two shades, Pitchblack and Barelash. Pitchblack, the shade I’ve been wearing, is carried on MAC counters and in the company’s regular and MAC Pro stores. Barelash, however, is exclusive to MAC Pro stores.

Like other MAC mascaras, Pro Longlash comes dressed to the nines in a sleek black tube.

The compact brush head sports soft, stubby bristles that thoroughly coat my lashes without making a mess on my eyelids.

Richly pigmented, Pitchblack dries into a true dark black without any gray undertones. Texture-wise, it feels thick yet smooth (no clumps!) and shines with a glossy finish.

Oh, and the reason it works fast? Because it dries in no time flat, which is probably both a blessing and a curse. Take a tad too long between coats, and it’s bumpy lashville, baby! I get the best results when I apply multiple layers while the product’s still wet.

Pro Longlash pledges all-day, silky long lashes that won’t look like spikes on your eyes. Think “natural lash look on Red Bull.” It’s the kind of flirty fringe I’d wear on a brunch date with El Hub.

More specifically, Pro Longlash adds noticeable length and volume, but they’re still in the realm of natural possibility.

My lashes don’t look as dramatically long as they do with Rimmel’s Glam Eyes Flirt, or as thick as they look with YSL’s Faux Cils, but the difference I do detect is all around perfect for me. 🙂

  • MAC Studio Fix

  • MAC Plushlash

Pro Longlash ever-so-slightly relaxes the curl from my lash curler, but the formula also locks in the lift, which I think makes up for any slight loss in curl. On top of everything else, it resists smudging, flaking and comes off easily with a good dose of PMS (aka Philosophy Purity Made Simple).

I’m in love with MAC Pro Longlash (I hope El Hub understands) — the dark color, the degree to which it lengthens and thickens, the lack of clumping and how quickly it dries. Plus, the price is totally right! If you’re Team MAC Mascara, swipe. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

You might like MAC Pro Longlash if…

  • You want an amped-up, natural look
  • You lust after lots of lash lift
  • For the most part, you’re looking for length and volume
  • You want a mascara that won’t flake or smudge

Karen

I’ll have to try it. Currently, I am on MAC’s Zoom Lash, which I am loving!

It’s kinda weird not seeing the comparison photos like you normally do; I miss them. It looks like a fabulous mascara. Then again, mascara tends to be one of those cosmetics that works fabulous on some and not others.

I’m insanely picky about my mascara. Lashblast fusion got trashed after three days because it was making my eyes sting and clumped like burrs on Zena’s fur (i.e. a big fat pain in a** to get out).

Did you receive the recipes I sent you? I hope you like them.

Holy long lashes, Batman! 🙂 I might have to try this when my tube of Definicils runs out!

Nice review. I’m currently test-driving the Studio Fix lash, which I am really liking. I usually only do one coat of mascara anyway, so maybe the Pro Lash is a good option for me. I have the problem of too-wet mascara dabbling onto my lid. So annoying! Quick dry sounds good. Thanks for the info!

I’m a proud member of Team MAC Mascara and I love love looove my Pro Lash! =) It has the best brush to me (strangely my fiance chose it in a moment when I tried to decide which mascara to buy and forced him to suggest smt, and he said “ok I liked this brush so please buy it and let me go” 😀 and it worked miraculously!), plus it gives me all I want about a mascara. Though there are other mascaras I like over all (like YSL Singulier) I’m never changing this one.

Hey! Can you tell me if this dries hard or do your lashes still feel soft? Thanx!

Hmm, I might have to try the Pro Longlash tomorrow. I tried the Opulash, but it made my lashes feel crunchy and it irritated my eyes (of course, I can be sensitive to most anything these days). I like the Zoom Lash, but haven’t tried any of the other MAC mascaras.

    Thanks for the review!

How does it compare to Studio Fix? I’m on the market for a new tube and I liked Studio Fix’s definition, reminded me of MAC’s mascara X

    Glowy Karen! 🙂

I hate to admit that mascaras are not really an everyday thing for me. I use a clear lash serum most days and usually mascara for evening or special occasions. That Pro Longlash Mascara is very intriguing to me though!

I finished one tube of this 2 years ago and never looked back since. I remember working it for 15 minutes daily because it wouldn’t hold the curl. I like my mascaras to curl and have length and while this had a lot of length, the curl just couldn’t cut it and it was very frustrating. Before I used Pro Longlash, I used Plushlash, and when I ran out, MAC was out of stock of Plushlash so I tried Pro Longlash, finished it and switched back to Plushlash. But I’ve since graduated to Dior Iconic and it’s not so much that Dior is waaay better, it’s just that I forgot how to use Plushlash. I know there’s a technique with the round side and the flat side but I just forgot which is for defining and which is for lengthening and can’t be bothered to figure it out.

To be frank, when I saw the picture, I’m more interested in your glow then your long lashes LOL.

This mascara seems promising. But most MAC mascaras seem to have not so good reviews, so I’m not confident about this one.

But your lashes definitely look fab!

Unrelated (sort of?), but the makeup look you’re wearing reminds me of something Kim Kardashian might wear! Love it!
