If you want to be truly terrified, don’t fire up a horror movie on Netflix. Instead, put on your makeup in full sunlight. HAHAHA! Dude. It’s kinda scary seeing a lot of product on your skin in such unforgiving light. Or maybe that’s just me because I haven’t been doing a lot of full-on makeup over the past few months (#pandemiclife).
So, I did this look yesterday morning because I made a promise to myself to put on some makeup. (I realize that my mask covers almost everything, but still, sometimes putting on makeup still makes me feel better.)
Connor had an outdoor playdate with a friend, and we were going to be outside for most of the afternoon, so in the morning I decided to use the natural sunlight streaming in through my window to help guide me through this one-product eye look with MAC Powersurge pencil.
I used it as an eyeshadow and a liner all on my lids!
Connor’s playdate was for outdoor “cake painting,” an idea I got from Busy Toddler on Instagram.
I taped a bunch of big boxes together to look like an oversized cake, and Connor and her buddy painted the layers with washable tempura paint.
I guess the most frightening thing about doing your makeup in the unforgiving light of the full sun is seeing just exactly how products behave according to the texture of your skin. GOODNESS GRACIOUS. It really forced me to blend my base and buff down all of the excess areas where there was a little too much lying there. I’m making this sound frightening, I know, but I think you gotta do it once just for fun because it really is eye opening!
I might do it again today because I guess I’m a masochist like that, LOL!
Like my makeup the other day, there’s also a bunch of O.G. MAC faves up in this makeup mix, like Powersurge on my lids, Blushbaby on my cheeks, and Whirl lipstick mixed with a little bit of Honeylove on my lips. (I wanted it to look like fall makeup, but I didn’t want it to go too brown.)
Initially, I went with a rosy brown matte lip because I was going for a fall look, but I also tried it with a brighter pinkish rose matte lippie…
I had an inkling that the eye/cheek combo would go really well a brighter pinkish rose lipstick…
This is Model Off Duty, one of the new MAC Powder Kiss Liquid Lipcolours. I think it looks really beautiful with this eye/cheek combo, and the next time I wear it I think I might do this lip color instead.
One more thing about Powersurge before I go — when you do these one-and-done looks with liner, the beauty of them is that they don’t have to be super perfect on your lids, because if you’re just wearing one color, if there are areas on your lids that are more elegantly blended than others, then don’t worry about it because as long as you have a relatively smooth transition of color that fades up toward your brows, you’re going to be fine.
As with any lid action, for instance darkness on the outer third, or when you deepen the outer v, you can do that for more dimension here too, but if you try and it doesn’t get where you want it to go, buff it a little more, don’t mess with it, and move on with your day.
I think these are great because they really don’t emphasize mistakes too much, and that’s a wonderful thing!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Can your lips ever be too brown? HAHA! I think the pink lip look is very nice too, and springy and cheerful. But you know I’m a sucker for the 90s lips. 🙂 I love that second pic of you and Connor – she’s just so contented to be giving you a hug! (cherish, CHERISH!). 🙂 Those girls did a great job on the cake, too. I feel like you’ll be keeping that for quite a while, if you have the room.
Karen says
The ’90s would like to say that lips can NEVER be too brown. HAHAHA!
I am cherishing ALL OF THE HUGS. She told me the other night that she never wanted to live anywhere without me and on the inside I was thinking, “Trust me kid, you’re going to feel differently when you’re 17.”
Oh, and I bet you by the time she’s ready to graduate from high school, Instagram makeup will have made a resurgence, and she’ll be taking her senior pics with batwing-sized false lashes and crazy carved contour.

I’m also wearing a full face today and I was shocked about the amount of product I was using, because I felt it was too much and ended up blotting part of my foundation with tissue (next time I’ll have a sponge next to me).
But yes I get you even though we’re wearing masks, makeup make me feel more normal.
BTW Connor has grown a lot!
Karen says
Right? I can’t believe there was a time when I would do full coverage and then some… If I tried wearing that amount now I’d feel like I was wearing 10 pounds of makeup.
Connor has had a growth spurt in the last couple of months! I no longer see her baby face anymore. She’s officially four and a half years old!
Ruchita says
Aww, love those pictures of you and Connor! She looks so grown up.
Back in the old days, I would often do my makeup in the car before going to work. It was definitely different than doing in my bathroom. I definitely paid more attention to blending and making things look more natural.
Love the look you did here. So pretty and natural! I do still wear makeup sometimes when going out. Even with wearing a mask it feels a tiny bit normal.
Karen says
Bathroom lighting has never been kind to me. LOL! There’s been many times when I used the bathroom to do makeup because it was the best possible option, and then I’d go outside into full sunlight and I’d catch a glimpse of myself and would be like WHOA.
And yay for at least rockin’ a little bit of makeup with your mask on. 🙂
Rosie the kitty says hello, by the way!
Ruchita says
Yes, I’ve had the same thing happen with bathroom lighting! It can be a shock to see the difference in natural light. The crew here sends meows and purrs! They are all snoozing in various parts of the house. Living the good life. 🙂
Karen says
Do they all get along now? (I just read an article on how it takes longer than you think for a cat family to “gel.”)
Bebe says
You two ladies look lovely, soon your little one ( not so little anymore ) will be checking out your lipsticks 🙂
Speaking of I absolutely love the look on you with those rosy lipstick but what’s the name of the brown shade which is very pretty on you
Cheers

Hi Bebe,
It’s Model Off Duty by MAC from their new Powderkiss Liquid Lipcolour line!

i LOVE these mom-and-daughter pics.
are you loving the Powderkiss liquids? i got Over the Taupe and my fingers are itchy to buy more of them (Model Off Duty, More the Mehr-ier, and maybe one of the brights/reds) but i also very much want to buy the Honest Beauty liquid lips you’ve highly recommended. not sure if i’m proud of myself or kicking myself, but Honest Beauty had an online 20% off sale earlier this month and I had a 2 or 3 in my shopping cart along with a lip balm and cream blush but i couldnt get myself to pull the trigger. on top of that, i am very intrigued by Rare Beauty… ugh. so hard to justify in these mask-wearing and financially unstable times. but they are all so pretty and i want! ?
Karen says
I totally get it, Fern! I wrote a wish list just for fun and I had Rare Beauty on there too. 🙂 I like the MAC Powder Kisses a lot; you have a few goods ones on your list (I love More the Mehr-ier and Model Off Duty).
What are you thinking about for Rare Beauty, by the way?
fern says
Maybe the lip souffles in Ascend, Heroic, and Transform? But also one of the highlighters, mostly because when Robert Welsh tried it, he gasped and was astounded at how pretty it was and that it played well with the products underneath. But aaaaaghhh… I fight daily with myself, going from an internal temper tantrum of I WANT ALL THE COLORS and realizing I haven’t used much of what I have in quite a while so… why?
… oh, forgot to mention that I want to see Rare Beauty’s concealer brush in person. I’m not sure if Sephora here is open or if they are, whether you are allowed in the store (we had another shutdown because our daily positives shot up from low double digits to as many as 300+ in a couple of weeks). Last I went in August, staff were outside and would bring products to you to show you/swatch on a clear palette. Couldn’t touch anything unless you bought it. Understandable, but not as fun an experience.
Sherry says
Oh my goodness!! Connor Claire’s hair is getting so long!! She’s really growing up…so cute!! Btw, love the Fall look!!
Karen says
I know! She’s only had one trim and so it’s been growing steadily for a few years now. The day she walks up to me and asks to chop it off into a bob is gonna be a tough day for momma. LOL!
I hope you’re having a very nice Friday, Sherry!
