Super Sparkle! A Shimmery Look at What You Can Do With the MAC Shiny Pretty Things Holiday 2018 Collection

Highlights to the moon and back! The MAC Shiny Pretty Things Holiday 2018 collection, which is out now in case you were craving high-intensity highlights, is a limited edition launch split into two parts — 1) a makeup collection with eyeshadows, liners, lipsticks, glosses and highlighters, and 2) a whole lotta gift sets.

Here’s a look I did today with both of the highlighters from the collection, just to give you an idea of what you could do with them. Mind you, I’m not really a gal who likes to walk around highlighted to the gods, but I was taken over by an otherworldly force when I saw these two new Extra Dimension Skinfinish Powders, and it said, “GIRL, YOU NEED TO SPREAD THOSE GLITTERS ALL OVER YOUR FACE LIKE BUTTAH.”

Soooo I did. ?

Highlighter #1: Snowflushed ($35)

This one’s a metallic bronzed pink with medium-sized pieces of pink glitter, and it looks like a glittery powder version of MAC Strobe Cream in Pinklite. I’m wearing it on my upper cheekbones, and I love it!

Highlighter #2: Oh Darling ($35)

I patted a small amount of metallic gold Oh Darling in the inner corners of my eyes, then dusted it all over my face with a big fluffy brush.

Yup, ALL. OVER. MY. FACE.

You can totally do this with any of the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes if you really wanna go for sparkly, shiny skin, but go easy on any areas where you’re breaking out, or skip those places completely.

For the most part, everything else I’m wearing here is from MAC, with the exception of what I used in my brows (NARS Brow Perfector in Atacama). The foundation is a mix of MAC Studio Fix in NC42 and Strobe Cream in Pinklite, which I also used under my eyes to hide any darkness.

No face powder, although I did dust a little MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Give Me Sun on my cheekbones, and then tapped matte hot pink Both Cheeks Lipstick, which is also from the Shiny Pretty Things collection (it’s like a matte version of Show Orchid) on top of that with my finger as a blush.

So as to not blind the astronauts on the International Space Station, I kept my eyes and lips matte. So that’s Kajal Crayon in Flourish Me Beautiful (the Kajals are back on the MAC website, by the way, so grab one while you can), Paint Pot in Layin’ Low, Extra Dimension Waterproof Mascara, Matte Lipstick in Both Cheeks, and the Lip Pencil in Talking Points.

What do you think? I feel kinda ’80s in this, but in a good way. Is this something you’d wear? Or are you not into shimmer?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I am not into shimmer, especially not into blinding highlights. I mean, I AM into shimmer on the eyes, but for the skin I will forever be stuck in the velvet-matte past.

Shimmer on eyes is always good!

Oh no honey, for you but not for me. I’m pushing 40 in the dry skin large big pores way and the last thing I need is a bright highlight drawing attention to it. Can you recommend something for skin that’s easy but attention grabbing that’s good to 40+ pores?

Definitely, Krystal. How do you feel about cream products? If you like them, MAC Cream Colour Base in Hush is gonna be your gal. I wear it all the time and feel like it’s the most forgiving on my skin (I’m 43). It’s one of those products that gives you glow without any frost. That would be my number one recommendation. But if you prefer a powder highlighter and want to stick with MAC, I can also highly recommend any of the Extra Dimension Skinfinishes in the permanent line.

You’re killin me with that first pic Karen. You are gorgeous! A little too much cheek shine for what I can do but the eye, blush, skin, lip are fierce!

      Hey Marina,

You’re so sweet. Thank you for this nice compliment… I needed it today! I’ve been feeling kinda blah lately and have decided to go big with my makeup, even if it’s just to run to Target. 🙂

BTW you can totally tone down the shine. I turned it up a notch for the photos!

I saw some reviews of snowflushed…and there was NO WAY i was going to let it sell out and not have it in my hands! I am an nc23-ish. I’m hoping this will give me a touch of color and be a great highlighting blush with a TON of sparkle. Im a sparkle girl! I think they outdid themselves with this one! GORGEOUS!

      Hi Danielle,

I think you’ll love it. It will probably pull more pink on you and will have more of a “just came in from the cold” sort of look. I hope you love it… I could just stare at the pan all day!

Also, snowflushed looks so much like the shadow “stylishly merry” from last year. I went to 3 MAC stores after it sold out online to try to find it. No luck! So now I’ll have a giant pan of it! Hah!

LOL, yes you will! It’s gorgeous! I’m going to wear it again today for the umpteenth time in a row.

Too much shimmer for my lifestyle but i love your eye look. I really wish I was comfortable with purple shadows. I love them on other people, but I just can’t put them on me.

I know how you feel! It took me a while to embrace purple, believe it or not. How about starting with a purple liner? Just a thin swish on your upper lash line… Or perhaps a purple tightline?

Oh, my. You always look lovely but this is the opposite of what would be flattering on me. I’m with Krystal above. I think this would be awesome for young folks with perfect skin. I need something much more pore minimizing and blurring, not a spotlight like this. HAHA!

PS Thanks for the International Space Station comment. Totally made me laugh!

      Hi Kim,

Aww, I think you could pull it off! Perhaps buffed on the lids? Luminous lids are always a great thing.

I use those highlighters on my eyes like eye shadow, and I totally LOVE these! I love to have shine on my eye lids so I am totally going to check these out.
I loved the International Space Station comment, too!! 😀 😀 😀

      Hi Kellly,

Yes, they’re super pretty as a brow bone highlight, on the lid, buffed on top of other shadows… So versatile! 🙂

I love your 80’s look!! I was a teenager of the 80’s and I love shimmer. That Snowflushed is a gorgeous color. I’m almost 52 and I still like to wear shimmery highlighter. I guess I don’t act my age. LOL!! Anyway, now I need to go check out MAC’s new highlighters. Yay!!

      Hi Sherry,

I was a kid in the ’80s and wildly envious of all the teenagers with their big hair and big belts and oversized shirts. LOL All I wanted in life was to dress like Madonna. I LOVE that you love shimmery highlighter. If you want some MAC highlighter recommendations from their permanent line, too, let me know. I can help you with that as well!

I have combination to oily skin so I never wear highlighters. But I love a bling/glittery eyeshadow so I sometimes buy bronze/gold highlighters to use as eyeshadows — but I never seem to run out 😉 You are totally rocking this highlighter Karen.

Speaking of which.. have you tried MAC’s Gold deposit as an eyeshadow? It’s quite pretty.

You look amazing! I really wanted the Snowflushed highlighter but when I swatched it in store, the glitter scared me away. Oh Darling is absolutely beautiful though and I want it. I didn’t know they were doing gift sets!
