Latest Target Beauty Haul! (The COVID-19 Edition)

April 28th, 2020 by Karen 25 Comments

target april-2020

Someday, folks will tell tales of a time when going to Target was, like…fun. They’ll gather around campfires, and I’ll tell the story of how the newborn cowolf and I would go to Target every day to stretch our legs, get out in the world and see people. There were so many “hellos!” from smiling strangers 😃 on those trips. So many kisses blown to the baby. 😘

Yeah…none of that happened on my last visit.

I left the store shaking. I saw so much rudeness and uncool behavior inside, like people pulling off their masks while shopping, others darting in front of people to grab products from shelves, and people barking at employees for trying to enforce the 6-foot radius. Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever go back to life as we knew it, and how different will the next new normal be? Will we need annual vaccines? Will children on playgrounds two years from now still be wearing masks?

I find myself wondering why, back in the day (two months ago), I never realized how sweet and carefree it was to just wander around a store…

A few good things did result from my last Target “adventure,” like, I was finally able to pick up some staples we’ve been out of (hello, Banza gluten-free pasta! Have we talked about this delicious stuff yet?), and I was also able to browse beauty products in person for the first time in a looooong time.

First thing I grabbed was a bottle of Aveeno Stress Relief Lotion to go with my Stress Relief Body Wash…

Although, at this point in the quarantine, you’ll probably need to dip me in a vat of this stuff and leave me there for a few weeks to even marginally decrease my stress level, ha ha ha!

Also, on a whim I grabbed Pantene Miracle Moisture Boost with Rose Water Shampoo and Conditioner, partly because I liked the rosy scent, and partly because I’ve been wanting a dedicated shampoo-and-conditioner set for frizzy hair. More and more of my grays are coming through every day, and they look like rebellious ramen noodles! Anywho, there’s a boxed set that comes with both the shampoo and conditioner for $12.99, which saves a buck over buying them separately.

I’ve used them twice and so and totally love ’em. My hair looks smoother, and it doesn’t feel weighed down. And I like these enough to want to try some other things from the line, like the silicone-free shampoo and conditioner.

Let’s see, what else? Oh, yeah, the last industrial-sized bottle of nail polish remover on the shelf made its way into my cart, as did this package of rainbow glitter clips by Scunci…

scuni glitter clips

I got it as a surprise for Coycoy. We’ve been experimenting with different hairstyles, and she loves wearing lots of clips neatly in a row.

That’s all the Target haulin’ I’ve done lately, and it may be all the Target haulin’ I do for the next month. We’ll see… Marin County just extended our shelter-in-place order until June 1st.

Hope you’re hanging in there, my friend. Sending virtual hugs. 🤗

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The stores around here are pretty empty (of people) so when I do have to go it isn’t so bad. I have tried those Banza lasagna noodles and they were pretty good! Would eat again. Tonight I’m going to make brown rice bowls with salmon and veggies. If you’re interested you can lookup the recipe on The Splendid Table website. I’m sure you could make it gluten free with cauliflower rice! I, too, want to get things back to “normal” or whatever the new normal will be!

I guess the Banza lasagna’s very popular here because even when the shelves were stocked, the lasagna was always out. Have you ever tried the Barilla gluten-free lasagna? It comes in rectangular sheets, which you can use directly in the oven without having to pre-boil (although I would still would just to soften them up a little bit). Anyway, it’s REALLY good. Tastes like regular pasta!

No I haven’t tried the gluten free Barilla, I like that brand though. I’m pretty sure you don’t have to pre-boil the Banza lasagna either, if I remember correctly!

Most stores around here are the same. People who don’t think they need to wear masks, maintain social distancing, etc. vs those of us who do think we should comply with all these things, both to keep ourselves safe and protect our neighbors.
This has devolved into two distinct camps: “Masks? We don’t need no stinkin’ masks” and the people who think we do. The non-mask wearers put the economy and being able to do what they want ahead of every other thing about this. It’s incredibly frustrating to try to be doing the right things to stay safe everywhere and find people who are basically just being scofflaws about it.
We had demonstrations about “FREEDOM” here. I wonder how many people will come down with Covid-19 as a result. Of course, the demonstrators didn’t think wearing masks and maintaining social distancing applied to them, so we’ll see soon enough, I guess. The woman who organized the Freedom rally in North Carolina has been diagnosed with Covid-19.

It’s great that in Asia everyone agrees masks are a good idea. Except for the very poor, most people wear them now. Altho some still not using them correctly.

Feel really bad for the USA

I know the shelter-in-place business is frustrating, but be glad you have it. Some people around here have taken sensible steps, but most have either been halfhearted about things or have just been ignoring precautions altogether and no officials have bothered to enforce them. Covid-19 was slower to come here because it’s a more rural, less populated area, but I think it’s going to hang on a lot longer than most places because of the level of stupidity, ignorance, and unconcern for others’ welfare.

I’m very glad we have it and for the most part a majority people here seem to be taking it seriously. Have you heard any news about the girls’ schools yet? Do you think they’ll be going back in the fall? It’s touch and go here. I doubt Connor Claire’s school will be open for summer classes.

We’re online-only for the rest of this school year (end of May). The first day of next year is August 10; they’ll wait until much closer to that date to see what’s going on before they make any decisions. It’s all been such a hot mess, I expect very little from them at this point.

I can’t get over the rainbow hairclip/bow/tutu combination. That is a definite quarantine fashion ‘Do’.

My hubby is the household hunter/gatherer so he deals with the Target/Whole Foods runs (while I do the Farmers Market). He has also reported very grouchy folks crowding, reaching, and yelling — even in chill Honolulu. I’m sorry to hear that once-pleasurable Target strolls are near-traumatic experiences for you. And I’m like you, my adrenalin goes through the roof and I start shaking when confronted with stuff like that (I am a super sensitive introvert).

But I’m glad to hear you enjoy the Pantene shampoo/conditioner because I’ve been wanting to try it! I have been needing some drugstore cosmetics but since I haven’t been wearing makeup and our stay-at-home order is not lifted through May, there’s just no reason for me to go to the Waikiki Longs/CVS buy makeup (though I’m currently waiting for my MAC and Deciem haul, heehee).

I hope you can catch some calmness out on your lanai to make up for the stressful outing.

Yes, it’s crazy. People are scared and acting out in a lot of different ways. Sigh.

I’ve heard that Safeway is starting a delivery in Hawaii. Have you seen that?

BTW the Pantene Rosewater line also has a deep conditioner, and woo hoo, it’s available for home delivery at Target!

I’m sorry that shopping is as traumatic in the north bay as it is down this way. Sigh. I hate going to the store now and delivery has been a bust in this area.
Let me know how those Scunci clips work out. I used to have a stash of neutral colored ones, but like elastic hair ties, they keep disappearing into the void, so I’m on the lookout for sturdy ones that will hold super fine hair. Although if I can’t get a haircut until June at the earliest, I may be able to pull my hair into a low ponytail soon.
I need to look into that Pantene shampoo and conditioner. As my hair gets longer it’s becoming bone dry and the ends are looking frazzled.
I finally fell asleep last night in a reasonable amount of time only to be woken at 1 a.m. by my neighbors screaming at each other in Korean and English. Considering we’re under shelter in place I wonder what the teenage daughter did that her mom took her phone away and they had to fight about it in the middle of the night. Sigh. This really isn’t going well for so many people.

Hi! The rainbow Scuni clips are just as nice as the pastel glitter clips I got her for easter. Connor has fine hair, and they manage to stay in place. 🙂

BTW, the Pantene Rosewater line has a deep conditioning mask which I’m super excited about!

Sorry to hear that you got woken up last night, and I hope that the mom and daughter are OK. Maybe try taking at nap later on today?

Thanks for the info on the hair clips. I’m gonna see if I can order them and the shampoo online. The thought of having to go into a store right depresses me.
I just hope my neighbors are having a better day today. I had a melt down yesterday because the door lock on my washer snapped off as the cycle was beginning and the washer totally shut down. Now I have no washer until we can find a repair person who handles Electrolux who can come out and repair it. Dear Hubs was a saint and took the half started load to the laundromat to finish it and he’s been calling all around today trying to find someone who is still working to come out and fix the machine.

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry! I was thinking the other day that it would be a terrible time to have a tooth emergency, or a plumbing emergency, or a washer/dryer emergency, so dagnabbit, I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it right now. Hopefully you guys will be able to find someone soon.

You’re not alone and not the only one having melt downs… I cried yesterday and this morning out of frustration from dealing with the EDD.

All I can say is “hugs”. Hugs to you and hugs to everyone else on this site. If I could hug y’all in person I would. But that is forbidden for now.
And Yeah! Dear Husband is a saint. He found a factory certified repair person to come out tomorrow to fix the machine. He even said he would deal with the person and that I should go for some exercise during that time slot.

I am in a rural area, and delivery doesn’t seem to be much of a thing around here. Shops are less crowded, but still much more crowded than is comfortable, and people are not respecting others’ space. I’ve never enjoyed being crowded, so I have longstanding habits which allow me to avoid it. In the end, things feel almost normal to me, other than the fact I’m not used to anyone else thinking about personal space, and, obviously, some people are. It’s a minefield, because some get offended when you dodge them and others would be offended if you didn’t. I’m always expecting an explosion. That has been the most difficult part of this, for me.

My Target is almost completely out of nail supplies every time I go. A sign of the times, I suppose. I would weep tears of joy if I found a row of buffing bricks.

I’m sorry you encountered so many thoughtless and rude people on your Target run. People in my neck of the woods are staying pretty calm. At Vons, Ralphs, Gelsons, Trader Joe’s, Target, and even Costco, people have been patient and considerate—and most important—they’ve followed the rules: masks, (many people with gloves), social distancing, following directions inside stores, being kind to each other and particularly to the employees. What a difference an area makes! We’ve still got a long way to go so there’s no use fighting it or trying to rush things before it’s safe to do so.

Stay well and keep safe. As the cliché goes, this, too, shall pass.

I live in a small coastal valley in Ventura County, California. Only single family homes are permitted and the lot size must be at least an acrea or more of land. We’re surrounded by hills, orchards, and agricultural fields. I think because we’re so spread out, have large yards, and have access to wonderful hiking and riding trails, none of us feel housebound. I’m sure that feeling of being able to get out of the house without worrying about other people is partly responsible for the mellow vibe.

I had a shouting match with our governor, over the radio, on my way home from work today. I tune in everyday at 2:00 to listen to him. Yesterday he said that as we open up, it would be mandatory for employees and anyone out and about in a public business to wear masks. Today he took it back and now just strongly recommends it, because he was getting so many complaints from people saying that they were “offended” by him telling them that they have to wear masks. Are you freaking kidding me!? Offended!? I’m offended that people are so self absorbed that they fail to consider the health of their fellow human beings all around them. Grrr! People!
I only go out to the gas station and grocery stores. I haven’t encountered any pushiness, but there are still a lot of people not wearing masks.

I used to use Aveeno all the time. I love the smell of their shave gel. Almonds, I think. I have been using Beekman 1802 soaps and creams. It’s goat milk based and doesn’t irritate or dry out my skin. I have been using their hand salve at night and I think it’s keeping me from having as many dry, snaggy bits on my fingertips. They’re not too bad, considering all of the hand washing that I have to do.

    I think it’s Scunci.

I have been following a few epidemiologists through social media. Seems things will get worse before getting better. The tougher the measures, the faster the recovery. Personally I dont think things will be ‘normal’ until 2022. It is going to be a marathon.

God, I’ve been mostly lucky going into stores (SE Michigan has been hit really hard), but seeing that lack of consideration for anyone else is just sdf o frustrating. I saw a cousin I don’t like (he only talks to me to try to sell me life insurance) complaining on Facebook that Menards wouldn’t let him in because he wasn’t wearing a mask. We have some scary protests against our governor at the Capitol.

I am getting hopeful when I talk to my coworkers from around the world. My colleague in Taiwan says some of their restrictions will be lifted soon. And while it’s so anger inducing to see s lot of what’s going on, I see a lot of people doing good things too.

I’ve gone to Target one time in the last two months, only to pick up my online order. I thought easy. I can do it. Put in my mask and gloves and entered the horror of my Target. It was way too crowded and people were all up on top of each other and I ran to the service desk and ran out of the store. I don’t know that I’ll ever go back. Such a stark difference to Trader Joe’s. I feel safe there. The limit how many people are in the store at once. The spray down carts and hands and everyone stays 6’ apart. I just got my anxiety under control in the past year. I’m not sure if “normal” is even possible again.
