Clinique Black Tie Violets: A Face of the Day

November 19th, 2009 by Karen 52 Comments

clinique black tie violets fotd 2

Last Friday’s Clinique Black Tie Violets swatchfest ignited a serious makeup love affair. I’ve been wearing the eye, lip and cheek products from the new holiday collection all week long.

My favorite look so far? This violet eye, shimmery plum cheek and dark pink lip. That’s Colour Surge Eyeshadow Quad in Black Tie Violets ($25) and Brush-On Cream Liner in Violet Luxe ($15) on my peepers, Shimmering Stripes Powder Blush in Tuxedo Plums ($30) on my cheeks and Defining Liner for Lips in Pomegranate ($14) topped with High Impact Lip Color in Extreme Pink ($14) on my kisser.

I like this eye look paired with the dark pink lipstick, but I think it would also be pretty with a sheer pink or violet gloss, too.

If you’d like a tutorial, then HOLLA at yo’ girl. 🙂

What colors did you wear today? Did anybody else rock the violets?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Nice to see you recovered well. I did not rock the violets but I did rock a smokey eye today. I’m hearing such great things about the Tuxedo Plums blush. Maybe I’ll drop Santa a hint 😛

      Hi Stephie,

You should! 😉 It’s a lovely color. You can build it up or wear it sheer… here I applied it with a fan brush for just a hint of color.

      Hi Tiffany,

Oh yah! A creamy purple or violet would be totally yum.

It took me a long time to get on the purple train, too. What are your go-to purples?

I love those colours on you! And the look is so classy. I think a tutorial would be awesome… I have a few purples that I could probably make work to mimic something similar, but I have no clue where to get started…

      Hi Kypris,

I’m guessing you could totally re-create it with your stash… do you have a creamy purple gel liner? If not you could probably use pencil.

Holy CRAP, girl. You look amazing! I didn’t even roll out of bed early enough today to put on colour, much less rock a violet shadow, so my hat is off to you 😛 Like a lot of the other commenters, I would also love a tutorial for this — it’s absolutely killer!

(If you rolled out of bed with that hair, I’m shaving you bald and making a wig out of it. Not only do your eyes look fab, you totally have model-hair!)

Looks gorgeous! I’m a big fan of the purple eye but am too timid to do much around the lower lid. Women wear pretty conservative or no makeup around here. Going to have to play with my stash. I have BB Violet Ink — looks similar to this gel liner — and Black Plum for the days I’m not feeling so sparkly. I just love this liner color on all colored eyes — really draws them out.

Your hair looks really pretty today! Damn.

I really like the combination of the purple eye and the dark pink lip. I think this has inspired me to play around a little bit with my new massive Sephora kit (you know, the ones they release with approximately 2895798327 lip glosses and eye shadows).

Steph B, I can totally sympathize! The typical make up look at my work is conservative or full on 90’s (I’m going to be offensive and say some historians tend to stay stuck in the past…)

I would love a tutorial for this look. I’m doing a bit of violet today (the Lorac Silver Screen pallet, cool toned colors), but no where as vivid as this. I’m definitely going to pick up the lip combo, I love a good pink!

      Hi Sarah,

Have you tried layering a creamy purple pencil or gel liner beneath the shadows? That might punch up the colors a bit.

GOD! I’m having a serious love affair with your HAIR! It’s so long and friggin’ beautiful. I wish my hair would magically just grow out, already. It’s shoulder length-ish (when straightened) and these curls are gettin’ on my DANG nerves.

It’s at that really awkward length where some of my hair is barely wavy and some of it is straight up kinky lol… it sounds weird, but if you saw it when I first wake up, you’d know what I’m talking about!

      Hi CC,

One great thing about Clinique shadows is that they’re pigmented, but not as heavily pigmented as lines like MAC or Urban Decay. This allows a lot of room for trial and error, especially with challenging shades like purple!

Hope you’re having a lovely Friday so far!

      Hi Resham,

I’m long overdue for a cut! From what I recall, last May the stylist cut long layers. I have very heavy hair, so she also removed some of the weight by thinning out some. I (hopefully) have time to go back in the next few weeks. When I get the specific names of the techniques she uses I’ll check back in with ya. 🙂
