Do you ever watch The Voice? Dude, I’ve been watching The Voice a lot lately, 1) it seems like they have a new season every 15 minutes, and 2) because I’m a sucker for any combination of the following: joking banter between Adam and Blake, Jennifer Hudson throwing shoes, and Kelly Clarkson talking a mile a minute about something and all of the judges teasing her for it.
Even though (grumble, grumble…) the show usually, as of late, culminates in America voting for a young, pretty pop female singer in the finale, it’s my favorite current guilty TV pleasure (that and Midsomer Murders).
Occasionally I yell things like “I would die. I would JUST DIE if I met Mariah Carey in person” at the television, or “I would bet money Kelly Clarkson’s wearing Urban Decay Naked Heat.”
Speaking of that, THE MAKEUP. It’s good. Especially Kelly’s. I’m always surprised by the stuff she wears because she really seems to love color and taking risks.
Mariah Carey has also been a guest coach in the last few knockout round episodes, and her style and Kelly’s are so different from each other.
I mean, Mariah’s makeup always looks damn good, too (Kristopher Buckle is her go-to artist), but I can’t remember the last time I didn’t see her in anything other than some sort of bronze lid or a subtle smoky eye with the same exact eyeshadow placement paired with either a pink or nude lip.
Her makeup never really changes, but she always looks b-o-m-b.
While I totally get sticking to something that works, I gotta say, Kelly’s makeup is so fun, and she always tries something different. In this season so far, she’s worn red eye eyeshadow in one show, then a purple eyeshadow in another. I also LOVE that she’ll wear different eyeshadow shapes and placements. I tracked down who I think does her makeup for the show, and I think it’s Gloria Elias-Foeillet, who does makeup for a bunch of celebs (including Missy Elliot!).
Hmm… I just realized something. See the edge of Kelly’s lips in the pics with the nude lips? She’s wearing dark un-blended lip liner. How very 1997! I wonder if there’s a stage makeup reason for that (perhaps to define the edge so the lips look fuller?), because the liner is relatively subtle and not something you see right off the bat unless you’re looking closely.
Or maybe she just likes late ’90s-style lip looks?
(Now those are some deep thoughts, ha ha!)
Maybe I should just ask, since I’ve been low-key stalking Gloria’s Instagram lately. I really dig how she balances between classically beautiful makeup and artsy looks. She’s a new person to follow if you love makeup inspiration like I do. 🙂

I used to watch X Factor just to see Demi Lovato’s makeup. She wore a LOT of it, but it was so cool and she tried so many different looks. It just really looked like she loved makeup, so I wanted to hang out with her and talk about eye shadow.
Nicki Minaj did a season of American Idol, and her makeup was always a work of art.(crazy experimental art, but so beautifully done)

Hi Jill,
I’ve never watched that show but I have seen a few of Demi’s videos and I also enjoy checking out her makeup!

I have seen that subtly unblended ´97 liner on the lips quite a lot lately, I think it is a nod to the trend coming back. As someone that has been around when it was popular the first time I am kind of hesitant to do it myself though – bad memories!
Karen says
Ha! I think it can look pretty cool if you do it right.

I get emails from Kylie Jenner’s makeup brand (don’t ask) and her latest lip kit pairs a darker liner with a lighter lipstick, so it must be making a comeback! I’m all for brownish nude lips but I can’t do the dark lipliner!
Karen says
Her makeup is very popular so I totally understand (although I refuse to buy it myself). Have you tried dark liner before? It can look pretty cool if you have the right lipstick!

I always lose interest in the Voice once America starts voting – for the sames reasons you stated: too many semi-adult, blond country/pop females – it can be disappointing. When it first started, I thought the Voice was more authentic than Idol, but it’s morphing into the same thing. Anyhoo, the makeup: in the first photo, Kelly looks like she has a bad cold with conjunctivitis at the height of hay fever season – which is how basically everyone looks in red eye shadow. Verrrrrrry few people can pull it off, IMO. I like her red lipstick look best – it goes with her big personality.

Ya know, I used to feel similarly about red eyeshadow, but it’s grown on me. It’s still not something I’d wear regularly but I don’t mind it so much. Anyway, if you ever get to see Kelly live, do it! She’s amazing in person.

The dark liner/light lip trend is one I’m low-key supporting. Especially if you can pull it off like Janet in the video for my fave song, “That’s The Way Love Goes”. I remember talking to a MAC artist back in the mid-90’s when that video came out. She told me to pair Chestnut liner with Touch lipstick. I’m actually thinking about re-visiting this look. This would probably look better on me than the time I tried to rock over-alls again – NO!!
Thanks for the new IG recommendation – I am loving her page. I also love her throwback posts – I love the looks she did for the artists back in the early aughts.

I have Chestnut and may do this today just for fun. Back in the day I used to leave the line TOTALLY unblended but I think I’m gonna need to blur it a teensy bit. Just a touch. I’m not ready to go full on ’97 yet! P.S. You know that Jennifer Lopez is in that video, right?
Karen says
Oh, and fave Janet Jackson videos…
For hair/makeup (even though it’s black and white): Love Will Never Do (directed by Herb Ritts!)
For the vibe: You Want This
For choreography: Miss U Much

Yes – Love Will Never Do is another favorite video/song. Janet videos and songs always make me happy. I really love the vibe of Got Til it’s Gone. And yes, love J-Lo in That’s the Way Love Goes.

Well, we haven’t had cable or internet (other than spotty cell service) since the hurricane and apparently won’t for several more weeks, so technically I’m not watching anything. But back when I did live in the twenty-first century, lol, I was looking forward to seeing Kelly this season. (This from a major reality tv hater.) I love seeing a realistic-sized person on tv looking fierce.
