Unsung Makeup Heroes: NARS Lodhi Satin Lip Pencil

June 25th, 2015 by Karen 26 Comments

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi ($26), a total unsung makeup hero

Dang, it’s hot here today…

Like, fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk hot here today (incidentally, have you ever tried that?).

Or, sweat-until-you-have-a-major-life-revelation hot here today.

Basically, it’s sticky-back-of-the-knees, crook-of-the-elbows, middle-of-the-booty-cheeks hot here today (oh, and my air conditioner isn’t working).

The only things keeping me from melting into a puddle of sweat are 1) the fact that it’s a dry heat (it DOES make a difference), and 2) this tube of NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi ($26), because it’s cool. 🙂

GURL, you’ve probably seen me wear this satiny coral lipstick on my pout before (I wore it on my trip to NOLA). It’s one of my all-time summertime faves, and I bust it out every year. If I were to list my top five summer corals, it would be top three.

The long-running Unsung Heroes series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog features some of my all-time favorite permanent collection products.

How do I love Lodhi? Let me count the ways…

The pencil packaging. One of the permanent collection NARS Satin Lip Pencils, Lodhi is a pigmented, smooth lipstick with a satin finish, and the pencil packaging is one of its strengths. A lot of the time with brights lipsticks, I need to use an additional lip liner to keep my edges from looking wonky, but because Lodhi already comes in a pencil, I just line the edges with it, and then fill in the rest of my lips. So it saves a step.

THAT FORMULA, THO! It’s totally on point. The creamy formula glides across my lips (there’s none of that annoying tugging, bah!) but isn’t so soft that it melts in extreme heat. I’ve taken Lodhi with me on summer trips up to Redding, California, which gets well into the triple digits (it was 110 there today!!), and it has never melted in my purse. The unscented, unflavored formula is also moisturizing and very forgiving of my flaky, textured lips. Plus, it lasts from four to five hours and plays nicely with gloss (try it with NARS Orgasm Gloss sometime).

The intensity! The color is just shy of bright neon — right where it needs to be to stay classy, as opposed to costume-y. But it’s definitely bold, which means that when I wear it I can get away with wearing less makeup on other parts of my face. This comes in handy in summer, especially on freakishly hot days when I don’t want to pile a ton of product on my skin.

I’ll do my brows, apply waterproof mascara, a little tinted moisturizer and a touch of under-eye concealer, then Lodhi, and I’ll be set. And if you do feel like wearing something elaborate on your eyes, Lodhi pairs well with browns, golds, greens, olives, khakis taupes and purples. Wearing it with a thick black cat eye and well groomed brows is really pretty, too. Very vintage, pin-up glam.

Lodhi might be a good option for you if you’ve been giving matte lips a sneaky side-eye this summer but haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet. Its satin finish almost looks like a matte, but because it does have a faint hint of shine, it doesn’t look completely flat.

I hope you fall in love with Lodhi this summer (or any time of year)! And if you do, and you feel up to it, please send me a pic of you wearing it, or tag me on Instagram. You can find Lodhi now at NARS counters, Nordstrom and online in the permanent collection.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The heat you described is making me nauseous!! No AC?! I’d move north…stat!!

I’m literally standing outside of sephora waiting for some friends to arrive, and this popped up! Guess what I’m buying now? My wallet doesn’t like you as much as I do!!

I grew up with no AC in a very hot, humid climate…take a warm (not hot) bath or shower before bed, stay a bit damp and have a fan by you!

I really like this color. I’m going to have to give it a spin the next time I’m at the NARS counter. I have about 3 of these and they are super convenient and great for travel. I have these in my purse most of the time. The only thing I find heartbreaking is that when you sharpen the pencil, you end up losing some product. I had a pretty gloss stick that I’d scrape and put into a little contact case (sooooo many, many, many uses for a contact case) so I could get every use I can — esp at $26.

Ahhh I love Lodhi as well! I don’t systematically have great success with NARS as a brand, but I have mad love for their Satin Lip Pencils and Velvet Matte Lip Pencils! I only wish they’d make them retractable. I always have to freeze the Satin Lip Pencils before I sharpen them!

Retractable – that would be perfect, then you don’t lose product.

It is gorgeous! Incidentally, my AC is out, too. Sad face. Of course, here on the East coast, we hit the triple digits one day this week, but the humidity here makes it maddening. We’ve got two portable AC’s working overtime to make it bearable. We just got a nice rain shower & its cooled things down considerably. And cold (bath) showers are always helpful =)

This is stunning and looks so good on you! I have definitely got to invest in some of these pencils, I’m really loving pencil-style lip colors for summer!

Such a beautiful shade. Kind of similar to Toxic Tonic, isn’t it? I still havent tried any Nars pencils though.

So I have just realized I have been calling Tropical Tonic “Toxic Tonic”, no idea where that came from! Lol

I have a couple of these pencils as my Sephora birthday gift, I love the Cruella color which is a deep red! Its a heat wave here in the pacific northwest, which is small potatoes compared to other areas’ definition of heat wave..but most buildings don’t have AC, so it’s miserable either way. 🙁

I remember my Grandma and I frying an egg on the sidewalk in Phoenix, AZ when I was little, so yes!

Wow, that color is right up my alley. Definitely one I’ve heard nothing about before but looks to be worth a purchase!

Everything in that first picture is drool-worthy 😀 Lodhi looks great on you, its a tad too light for my skin tone 🙁
Too hot today! It felt like someone accidentally left the heat on at 100 F – dry, hot, dry!

This is such a pretty true coral but I feel I have to do a lot of work on the rest of the face to carry this lip color off! Too much effort! 😛

This color looks amazing on you! I have yet to dive into the realm of matte lip products. As much as I try to keep up with exfoliating sometimes I forget and when you need to rush out the door in the AM I want something I can just slap on and go. Mattes can be unforgiving when it comes to flaky lips. I’m thinking if I find a color I can’t live without it may inspire daily maintenance.

    Such a pretty color.
I do love lip crayons and as you pointed out a few days ago, NARS is still missing in my collection.

I love that Color, it’s amazing. I just can’t get down with NARS pencils. I feel like I lose so much product when sharpening and also, I lose sharpeners. I wish they would just put it in a twist up like their matte lipsticks. Also, I can’t really get a sharp enough point to line my lips effectively. It’s too bad because they have so many amazing colors in this line

I didn’t realize I would even like this type of product until I got the lip pencil duo from Sephora for my birthday. The satin and the matte pencil are both formulas I really like! I may have to pick up more. And I have always been a tube lipstick girl!

This color always looks great on you (and I love it when you pair it with an olivey green top or jacket – such a great color combo). Karen, holy cow. I was in Central PA last week and literally could not stop bemoaning the humidity. I’ve lived in the Northeast my entire life and have never experienced anything like that outside of Houston. HAHA! It was like putting on my best business suit and sitting in the sauna. And I might have mentioned it to my coworkers and the locals. 100,000 times. 🙂
