Chanel Spring 2009 Hydrabase Lipsticks: Red, Coral and Pink Bold Lips

January 7th, 2009 by Karen 29 Comments

Toot-toot! All aboard the Chanel Spring 2009 Bohemian Fantasy Rouge Hydrabase Lipstick train (what a mouthful!). It’s a non-stop ride straight to the land of decadent reds, corals and pinks.

Are you ready to roll?

The six colors released for the spring collection offer the same trademark creamy coverage that characterizes other Chanel Hydrabase lipsticks ($27).

My favorites are the boldest colors pictured above from left to right — Euphoria, Fuego, Rose Rebelle and Gipsy Scarlett.

Two more subtle colors — Fiesta (left) and Beige Desire (right) — were also included in the release.

Bold but wearable

The colors are bold but not in a harsh way. I think these are bright and cheerful, not moody or dark. There are no vampire lips here, LOL!

When I swatched these colors on the back of my hand I felt they were all part of a cohesive collection. They felot related, like sisters! Euphoria (coral-pink with pearl) and Rose Rebelle (rose-pink with pearl) look very similar to me, so I’d suggest Euphoria if you prefer warmer shades or Rose Rebelle if you like cooler ones.

Gipsy Scarlett and Fuego are the haughty red siblings of the bunch. Fuego’s creamy, coral red would look great on my warm-toned ladies. Gipsy Scarlett, a neutral magenta red, is probably the most flexible shade of the group, and one that I think would flatter most gals.

I love these four colors, but I’m guessing Gipsy Scarlett will be the shade wearable by the greatest number of women because of how neutral it is. Imagine her with a shimmery beige and brown eye with plum liner for spring… PURTY!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love the colors, they look so soft and pretty! Too bad I’m scared of lipstick lol…I wore red for Halloween and felt completely out of my element. I wish I were brave enough to venture out of my safe colors (neutral pinks/nude glosses)…
How did you get so brave about make up, Karen?

Beige Desire looks gooorgeoouuusss! I’m a sucker for subtle lip colors. I feel like I can’t pull off the brighter lipsticks. Hm.

Hi Karen. I have Rose Rebelle. I want Gipsy Scarlett! 🙂 I will be getting it soon I hope. I am amazed that the pink red colour is so easy to pull off but so gorgeous!

    Hi Vanessa H.,

I’m still pretty wimpy when it comes to crazier bright eye looks (which I *love* but I feel too old to pull ’em off), but I think just trying all sorts of new looks helps. How about easing yourself into bolder shades, by using reds and berries as a stain, rather than a full on bold lip? 🙂

    Hi YadiQ,

You could totally do it… maybe start with a stain? Perhaps we just need to find you the right red. OoOooO, that would be a fun makeup mission!

    Hi Karen B.,

It’s definitely one of the brighter ones of the bunch. You could so rock it… it would look really dramatic and beautiful against your skin. 🙂

    Hi Maggie,

That one is gorgeous — probably one of the easier ones to wear out of the bunch. Do you think you might try it?

    Hi Indian Girl,

Yah, these are super moisturizing! A little thick, but hey, the coverage is nice.

    Hi Cheri,

You can never go wrong with subtle, nude lips. What are your favorite subtle lip colors?

    Hi Miss QQ,

I remember you mentioning that awhile back. What have you worn with it?

Well definitely these are some nice colors, but i don’t think they will go so well with my white skin. I think they are more appropriate for darker skin beauties.

I actually have been using stains in the berry family
Emanuel ungaros lipstain and a korres cherry oil gloss in plum
It’s not sticky at all and has a stain like quality to it

If you haven’t tried it this is a must – creamy light pigmented and very long lasting !!
The EU stain is a bit drying but I am infatuated with the color

    Hi Karen,

today I ventured out into the world of bold lip colors. I wore Clinique citrus rose (a bright coral/pink/red) blotted, then topped off with Lancome color fever gloss in combustible. I am a medium toned African American woman with gold- red undertones. I kept the rest of my makeup clean and subtle. The color makes my lips and face pop but I still am self conscious…I usually only wear pinky- brown nudes. What do you think? Can I rock this or should I slink back home and wipe this stuff off?

      Hi Jessica,

You can rock this! When trying a bolder look, sometimes you just need time to adjust and get used to it. I vote for sticking it out for the rest of the day, and then wearing the look around the house a few more times before you try it out in public again. It sounds silly, but I do it all the time. I think it helps me gain confidence and allows me to feel more comfortable in colors that are new to me. 🙂

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
