My Last-Minute MAC Halloween Costume, and Beware the Shark Cat!

October 31st, 2011 by Karen 66 Comments

Shoot, I wasn’t even planning to dress up at all this year, but Tabs insisted that I throw something on, because he didn’t want to be the only kitty on the block without a dressed up assistant/trick-or-treating companion.

I couldn’t bear the thought of hitting up the costume store, since I knew it was gonna be crazy busy, so I busted a Tim Gunn and tried to “make it work” with what I had around the house.

As far as last-minute Halloween getups go, this MAC artist costume was super easy. I slipped on a black dress, fashioned a homemade tag out of a MAC logo I found online and stuck some brushes behind my ear. I also really, REALLY wanted to sling a black brush belt around my waist (like the ones that MAC artists wear at the counter), but I kinda ran out of time. I wore a gold brush belt from the MAC Wonder Woman collection instead.

SIDE NOTE: If you plan to recreate this costume and have a brush belt sitting around the house, use it! It’ll totally take it to the next level.

After I put on some bright makeup (well, bright for me), Tabs seemed adequately satisfied…

You know cats. You can never really tell if they’re staring at you with approval or disdain. 🙂

This year Tabs had his heart set on a steam punk-inspired costume, but I couldn’t track down a kitty-sized monocle and ascot.

Oh, well. Next year.

Instead, he decided to be a shark — an excuse to wear something form-fitting and sleek (to show off his curves).

How about you? Are you dressing up this year? I’d love to hear what you (and your pets!) are wearing.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Went really simply this year: orange HK t-shirt, black cat ear headband, and I did one eye in white shadow + glitter, and one eye in black shadow + glitter. I had to work and was lugging around a lot of boxes (and knew it going in!) so no wigs or fairy wings or anything this year, haha.

I didn’t “dress up” except neck up. It was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar too cold here and I had school. Neck up, I was the black swan from the movie Black Swan. (Besides, I refuse to go around school in a leotard, tights and tutu. That’s too revealing!)

I pulled my hair up in a ballerina bun like I used to when I went to ballet and made a little feather thingy to stab into my hair. Well, sort of. I axed all the hairspray, the mousse, the hair net and nearly 2/3 of the bobby pins. It was ballerina bun light mode! We ballerinas alone created a large hole in the ozone from all the hairspray we used! We use a ton of it!

I even have photos! Ha ha ha ha ha!

I know Tabs has his diva moments but he’s definitely a good boy if you can get him to wear a costume. I can only imagine trying to get my girls into one – there would be fur flying everywhere! HAHA!

The Hubs was the Lone Ranger this year and I was Tonto(ess). He was not particularly thrilled but was a good sport about it. The boys were the Grim Reaper (with bright red LED eyes) and the Scream guy. One with a scythe and the other with a butcher knife. I miss the days of Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore. 🙂

Your costume is awesome, but Tabs wins for the shark fin and uber cuteness!

This year I found pulled out my striped tight and a pair of red shoes, and bought a striped dress from H&M, a wide brim black hat and a cape and went as the Hamburglar! I used a Happy Meal box as my purse. We roamed around Santa Monica Blvd’s block party in Hollywood and people actually figured it out and asked for my picture. 🙂
