Hey, Sailor! Come here often!?
Exclamations abound in MAC’s latest limited edition summer release, a fairly sizable collection of 38 pieces for lips, eyes, faces, cheeks and bodies that sails into port (and onto North American MAC counters) May 24.
The crew, a rabble of ragtag repromoted products and first-time sailors, also features two maritime makeup bags — the $35 Gone Sailing Makeup Bag Set and $45 Gone Sailing Tote, both of which also drop anchor on May 24.
The crew’s fancy limited edition uniforms must cost more than MAC’s standard threads, because the products are priced slightly higher than normal.
The blue and white striped pieces are easy to spot from shore, and all of the packaging feels very crisp and clean to me. I like. 🙂
You can really see the striped pattern in the High-Light Powder pan; the pattern reminds me of a sailboat’s sails.
If the name of the collection sounds familiar (“Hey, Sailor!”), it was also the name of a Lustreglass from 2008’s Naughty Nauticals, another maritime MAC summer collection, and that’s not the only thing recycled here.
The pigment in Naval Blue also set sail in spring’s Chenman collection, and the Refined Golden Bronzer also went MAC To The Beach in 2010 (In Hey, Sailor!, I think the Refined Golden Bronzer appears more matte and less sparkly than it did when it went MAC To The Beach). Then, it was a
Orange Tempera Lipglass also sailed with 2011’s Fall Colour Collection, and the Beach Body Oil (To The Beach) served alongside the Refined Golden Bronzer in 2010 when MAC went To The Beach.
That’s a lot of sailing! And a lot of exclamation marks, too. The ship is rife with ’em, yargh! Hey, Sailor! Salute! (a neutral peach lipstick) when a superior officer enters the bridge. While you’re at it, Throw Me a Line! (a bright red lip pencil), and Launch Away! (a peach blush). Give me full power and every exclamation mark ye got!!!!!
The first time I heard about this collection, because of the name, I thought it might be related to the cool-toned Naughty Nauticals release, but now I don’t think that’s the case at all.
From the 23 pieces I’ve seen, Hey Sailor! features far fewer cool-toned blues, purples and pinks. The collection seems warmer to me, more like a traditional summer release, with its golds, corals, peach and tan. Of course, MAC had to add a twist with the kelly green and navy blue, which seem to give the release a preppier vibe. This sailor guy/girl probably wears J. Crew and Ralph Lauren more often than Roxy and O’Neil.
Here’s the shipping manifest some product pictures and swatches, as well as some action shots of the crew. 🙂

Jennifer says
This looks like the perfect collection for redheads.
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
It sure does. I love the look on the model for this campaign.
Janelle says
Wow. This collection is gorgeous! I’m excited to try the liquid lip balms. I better get my but to my local MAC for this collection!!!
Karen says
Hi Janelle,
Yes! I’m so glad you like it. 🙂 What are you thinking about picking up?
Cate says
I’m definitely interested in checking out the lipsticks in this collection, especially the reds! I like the looks of Salute!, but I have a feeling it will be utterly unflattering on my skin tone. I’ve never tried a Mac bronzer, so I think I will pick one of those up too! This collection seems really fun.
Karen says
Hi Cate,
The bronzers are really nice. I’ve used several MAC ones and they they look natural on the skin and never break me out. Which one are you thinking about getting?
Let says
The Lip Pencils and Suntints (Au Rose and Abalone) look nice. Other than those, the rest are kinda meh to me.
Karen says
Hi Let,
The Suntints are pretty. I wore Au Rose the other day and liked it a lot. The are all fairly sheer and easy to ear.
Abigail C says
I wish I could afford MAC all these tones are so beautiful I am definitely going to try and buy atleast one
Karen says
Hi Abigail C,
What item are you thinking of getting?
Louise says
Oh hmm that highlight looks like it might be a bit too pigmented for my fair skin- might make a nice blush though! I love the look of those lipglasses on you! So juicy & bright 🙂
xx Louise
Karen says
Hi Louise,
I built it up so it would show up in the swatch; you could easily take it down a few levels.
dani@callitbeauty says
The lipglasses and the Fleet Fast blush look gorgeous!
Karen says
Hi Dani,
The bright glosses will look great on you!
Joyce says
I’m getting the Jaunty eyeshadow and Crew highlighter from this collection. Can’t wait!! =)
Karen says
Sweet, Joyce! You’lll love both. 🙂
Jenn says
That highlight powder looks awesome!! Is its cream or powder? Or a hybrid? 🙂
Karen says
Hi Jenn,
It’s a powder! It’s very finely milled and feels almost creamy though.
Tracy says
Oh man! This collection looks so good! Dang it, I thought I was done buying summer collections haha!
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
These colors are gonna look GREAT with your new hair!
Marsy says
Great pics! I have a suggestion: could you include your skin type NC/NW when you post your swatches. It would be very helpful to know how the undertones pull the shades certain skin types. Thanks.
Marisa Payne says
She does- it’s NC42 (listed at the top)
Karen says
Thanks Marisa. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Marsy,
I have NC42 listed at the top of the swatch section. 🙂
Nicole says
I’m excited for the lipsticks as well as the blushes. The Jaunty eyeshadow looks like a more frosty Naked Lunch color.
Karen says
Hi Nicole,
Yeah, Jaunty does have a bit of a Naked Lunch vibe to it. It’s a touch more tan … so pretty!
shamil says
I really love this collection. I’m so going to buys a bunch of things lol. When i do ill definitely be doing a review on them on my channel its http://www.youtube.com/user/shamil222 if you guys are interested.
Amazing pictures by the way! XoXo
Karen says
Thanks!
Shauna says
I want, I need Salute!
Karen says
Hi Shauna,
Ya know, I was actually surprised to like that color. Although it has a sort of concealer lips vibe to it, it’s still very easy to apply and wear.
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
Come to mommy, Old Gold! One day or another I’ll get cha get cha get cha get cha!!!
I’m actually a fan of most eyeshadows in this collection, but I do own similar things already so I didn’t get any. Old Gold on the other hand… *drools like a big dog*
Karen says
Hi Sunny,
Old Gold is cool. Try it smudged on top of black liner!
Nina says
This one doesnt float my boat. For some reason, I am not sure what. 🙂
Karen says
Aw, really? I was hoping you’d be into the greens and blues.
Kajal Couture says
I’m interested in the shadows and sun tints. I’m anxious to find out your faves!
Karen says
Hi Kajal Couture,
I’m actually really loving the neutrals from the shadows I’ve tried. The green shade looks kinda like MAC Fresh Flare. Still, it’s pretty. As for the Sun Tints, to be honest, they all look kinda the same on my lips.
Selina says
Love the send me sailing lipglass! Do you find that it is as high maintenance as Russian Red?
Karen says
Hi Selina,
Yup, it’s a little high maintenance because it’s very, very pigmented, but a good lip liner should help. 🙂 If you have Kiss Me Quick around, that would work.
Selina says
Thanks Karen!
Karen says
You’re welcome, Selina! Do you think you might pick it up?
Happy Wednesday!
Monique says
Your love for your cat is adorable. If I were a cat, I’d want Karen to be my human! I’m not impressed with this collection…I appreciate your reviews and swatches…I don’t live near a MAC or Sephora and these reviews help me alot!
Karen says
Aww, thanks Monique. I do love that husky ball of fur, it’s true. 🙂
So tell me what you’re liking from the collection so far! 🙂
Chris25 says
The glosses look so pretty!
Karen says
Hi Chris,
Do you think you might pick any of them up?
Trina J says
The packaging is super cute! So funny I actually worked for MAC when some of the other products you mentioned were launched. There are definitely some similarities between products, but it all for the love of makeup…can’t wait to get me hands on Red Racer and Send Me Sailing!!
Thanks for sharing 🙂
Karen says
Hi Trina,
That’s so crazy! Remember Cool Heat? And Neo Sci Fi?
Phyrra says
That green is so pretty on you!
Karen says
Thanks, Phyrra! I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday!
Pink Fiary says
loooove looove loooove these collection *_*
Karen says
Hi Pink Fiary,
Yay! I’m glad you like it. What are you thinking of picking up?
Erin says
When I saw your eye makeup i instantly said WOW! So I’ll be taking my happy little butt to the counter once these are available. I’m looking for a good update for summer and far away from my same ‘ol same neutrals. LOVE THIS!
Here’s a kitty for you ðŸ±
Karen says
Hi Erin,
Yay, a kitty! Thank you. 🙂
So glad to hear you like this collection. The greens and blues are perfect to add to your neutrals (I’m a neutrals kinda girl, too).
Have you been following MAC for long? I
Joanna says
From all the swatch I love the lipglass
Karen says
Hi Joanna,
Yes, the Lipglasses are so pretty!
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
Riviera Life is so gorgeous on you, Karen! And those Suntints are pretty too (even though they look a bit too watery…)
Karen says
Hi Becca,
The Suntints look might look kinda watery, but they’re pretty thick — more like balm. They’re also very sheer!
Gotham Polish says
So much to choose from 🙂 Seeing the MAC summer collection is becoming one of the signs that spring is just about over and soon it will be beach and bbq time!
Karen says
YES! I’m already looking forward to eating all the delicious sides like potato salad, macaroni salad, watermelon, corn …
Holy crap I’m hungry, LOL!
Anywho, are you planning on picking up anything from this launch?
Alissa says
Awesome review. I just per-ordered To Catch a Sailor, Red Racer and Au Rose. All the colors looks great on you. Thanks for sharing.
Tor says
I’m lusting after both of the pigments! I’m a sucker for anything nautical, though.
KK says
So happy for the Suntints! I love them, and they’re my favorite lip product for summer. I’ll definitely be picking up at least 2 of the colors.
Kristine says
I was looking forward to this collection, but now that I see how beautiful the colors look on you I am even more excited! I hope the colors will look great on me as well. I am between a NC 20-NC25.
Adrienne says
Im liking some colors (feeling fresh, naval blue, and those nicely pigmented bright lipglosses!), but I think it’s rude that MAC decides to get (moderately) creative with the packaging (its cute -I admit – but just stripes on top of the packaging they already produce), and they make the consumer pay for it 🙁 Big “uncool move” in my book!
Stripes on the top of the eyeshadow compact are not worth, what, like an extra $1 per every single shadow. There are many parts of the MAC company that I really respect, I just wish they wouldn’t do stuff like this 🙁
I also wish the highlighter was lighter! As a very pale, huge pored girl, I would kill for a well priced (read: applicable for macy’s discount, haha) non shimmery/non shiny/non high sheen highlighter!
Abby says
Hi Karen! i love your blog and you look so pretty in all the colours 🙂
Thank you for your reviews and swatches 😀
Kiewwa01 says
This post is awesome! I’ve purchased some of the stuff online, but the thing I’m most curious about is the suntints, I brought au rose, are they sticky? Your blog is great! You’ve been bookmarked 🙂 Kiewwa01 xx
Celine V says
I love your blog! I have nc42 skin also and have ordered the Salute! lipstick to try as a nude color. Did you use any liners or moisturizers to get the nude look you have in the photo? I’ve heard that the lipstick is a little trickier to apply from other reviews.
Ps. Are you by any chance filipina? I am too!
Peachesandblush says
That fresh minty green on your eyes is perfection Karen!
Bun Bun Makeup Tips says
I love your eye makeup for this look! Green and gold looks FABULOUS on you!
