You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Do you have a lucky charm?
No, but they are magically delicious, haha. Nope, I’ve never had a lucky charm. - Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
Yes. I like ’em a lot, as long as I have a comfortable bra. My wedding dress was strapless actually. - Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
No, but it sounds cool, and I still would like to learn. When I was 14 I did ask for a sewing machine for my birthday, and I actually got one, but I had no idea how to use it. I guess it never occurred to my parents to include lessons or to find somebody to teach me how to sew (there was no such thing as YouTube back then), so it just collected cobwebs in a storage room for years. - Are you wearing anything green today?
Currently, no, but I will once I change out of my pink sweatpants. - Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
Favorite green polish is Chanel Jade, favorite shadow is MAC Greensmoke (or Humid; it’s a tossup) and favorite liner? Urban Decay Stash. - What does your wallet look like?
It’s an obnoxiously bright yellow wallet from Kate Spade, but I love it because I can always find it in my purse. - Did you ever get detention in school?
Maybe once or twice because I was a big ol’ nerd. The only reason I ever got it was for being late to first period. - Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
I like it on other people but not on my toes because they are very long. I’ve talked about my freakishly long alien toes before… You do not need to hear any more about them. - Are you planting a garden this year?
I am! We started last weekend by cleaning off the deck, getting (and building) some wooden planter boxes and planting some snapdragons, Gerbera daisies… I got a couple of lavender shrubs, a bunch of tomatoes and, oh! — two bell pepper plants and a purple basil. And a bunch of catnip, of course.
- Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
Years ago I took a one-day scrapbooking class. It was fun, but I never really did anything with it after. And in college I went through a phase where I made beaded necklaces (“She’s making jewelry now.”).
Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂

4. Are you wearing anything green today?
My tank is green and so are my eyes, so I’m always wearing it!

Never.

Nope! I can’t!

I’ve made wine and cheese, does that count?
Karen says
Yes it counts! Have a great week, Erin!
Katherine M says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
~Not really (I’ve eaten ’em too!) – I really think that a lot of luck is about mindset. Something I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older. If you don’t think you can do it, you will either have a lot of trouble with something or not be able to do it at all. If you go in with a positive attitude and an open mind, even if you do run into a problem it is usually solvable.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
~Yes, I love them in the summer. My wedding dress was also strapless and very comfortable. I actually want to shorten the hem and wear it for my anniversary each year.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
~I haven’t done it in a while but I do know how to sew and I have made clothes before and even stuffed animals. I’m pretty crafty when I don’t have other things going on that have a more pressing need.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
~I have a green headband on!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
~I have one by China Glaze (can’t remember the name) that is a bright, vivid green polish, and I love UD liner in Junkie (kind of a peacock green/teal). I have a Milani Shadow in Shamrock that I wore for many years on St. Patty’s Day.
6. What does your wallet look like?
~It’s a golden tan/brown one from JC Penny – small and easy to carry.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
~I think one time lunch detention for not doing my math homework, but the teacher we had made it a lot of fun. You almost wanted detention in his class.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
~Since I’m a nail biter (and I’ve tried to stop many times), I tend to do more nail art and polish on my toes. I’ve done magnetic polish and nail stickers but that’s as far as my nail art has gone.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
~We live in a townhouse, so our garden is limited to our small deck and flower bed. Last year we planted a cucumber in the flower bed (it loved being able to stretch out, it was at least 10 feet long), and we have large pots that we plant tomatoes in on the deck. I just got our first houseplant, a pretty orchid (in the Pantone color of the year), and hopefully I can keep it alive. My mother and my mother-in-law have lots of plants in their houses. Hubby and I haven’t had any till now.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
~I’ve made things, like stuffed animals when I was a kid, and blankets for my model horses (yep, I was a model horse dork since I couldn’t have any of my own). Lately I have done a few house projects – I am staining some wood shelves and other things for the house. It’s simple but pretty. I also used to draw and paint a lot (until I had a really nasty art teacher in college), and I’m starting to get into that again. Hubby wants the art in our house to be my art since I am a very detailed artist when I actually draw or paint something. However, I can only really draw horses, muscle cars, and scenery.
Karen says
Okay, so I have to know — what did you guys end up doing with the 10-foot long cucumber? I bet that it made a TON of salad.
Katherine M says
The plant itself got up to 10 feet (we didn’t put it in a cage) because it is a vine plant. It made so many cucumbers (and huge ones too, I did have some almost a foot long) that I gave quite a few away to the neighbors since I couldn’t eat them all. They were yummy!
Karen says
Ok, LOL! I thought you had a single cucumber grew up to 10 feet. Silly me. I was thinking, “I hope she entered that bad boy into a veggie contest at the county fair!” Here in Nor Cal they do things like that, especially around Halloween with XXL pumpkins.
Anywho, I love fresh cucumbers. Have you ever sliced them up and just added a little bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper? YUM. It’s a refreshing accompaniment to Asian stir fries and dishes.
Rossanne says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? I think I’m a walking lucky charm! I’m incredibly lucky
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Yes yes yes!! Love em!
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? Yes. I used to do it for fun
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Nope
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Eeeeek!! I rarely wear green. Don’t even have a shirt that is green. It pulls weird colors from my face.
6. What does your wallet look like? It’s a peony pink Prada envelope!
7. Did you ever get detention in school? I was a goody two shoes.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? Probably not, think they are a waste of money/time if they are on my toes!
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Probably some moringa, or adopting a bonsai tree!
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? Yes, everything you can think of – soap, pressing flowers, pop-up books, illustrating books, etc!
Karen says
Hi Rossanne,
That’s cool that you used to make clothes! What was the coolest thing you sewed?
Tracy says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
No, but I used to have a white rabbits foot key chain. Don’t judge, it was the 80s.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
My wedding dress was also strapless but I tend not to due to the fact I’m always tugging at them.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
Yes I know how to sew but I’ve never made clothes.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
My neighbor in my building gave all the ladies green carnations. Super sweet!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
I have an unhealthy intolerance to the color green thanks in part to the Wizard of Oz.
6. What does your wallet look like?
Black Alexander Wang which my hubby has dubbed the last wallet I will ever own because of the price tag.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Twice. Once in 5th grade, once in 11th. Both for not doing homework. Both equally mortifying.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? I never have and I don’t think I ever would.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Since I’m married to a chef, fresh herbs are always a must and so is catnip for our fur babies.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I can quilt, weave baskets and make cloth ornaments/dolls. I’m from the East Coast (Boston to be exact) so where would a city girl learn these killer skills. I spent about a minute in Northern Michigan and if you know anything about that area there is NOTHING to do there. I think people craft out of sheer boredom. Now that I think of it my neighbors all had HUGE families (10-14 kids EACH) So I stand corrected. There were 2 things to do. Craft and you know 🙂
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
Um, you’re married to a chef?! How cool is that! El Hub makes grilled cheese and scrambled eggs and that’s about it. And my cooking is questionable, LOL. Our food situation is pretty sketchy… How long have you guys been married?
Tracy says
Yes I am married to a chef and I should weigh 300lbs but luckily he spends most of his time feeding the masses and I luckily I can cook. But when he is home I definitely take advantage. I’ve known my husband since we were in pre-school and our parents are neighbors so he owes me for all the hair pulling, name calling, bra-snapping, and overall juvenile behavior I endured growing up (boys, what can you do?)
Donna N says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
–my daughter!!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
–being endowed with a larger chest is not conducive to strapless styles, unfortunately. I have always envied you gals that have a smaller bra size!
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
–It would be a bit rusty, but yes—I used to sew alot. I was taught by my Grandmom.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
–Not Kelly Green but Lime Green (my tank top, under my Tinkerbell fleece from WDW)…..oh, was that TMI? LOL!!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
–I love my NARS Kyoto eyeliner and I can’t wait for warmer weather so that I can do some bright green polish on my toes~
6. What does your wallet look like?
–it’s a Vera Bradley Turn Lock style—I actually have two of this style….one in the Jazzy Blooms fabric and the other is older—in the Boysenberry fabric. I really should invest in a good and proper leather wallet, but I really like the Turn Lock functionality.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
–Nope, I was pretty straight-laced in school. I was one of those “good girls”….LOL!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
–Only on my big toe…usually for vacation or a special occasion
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
–the hubs and I have talked about this, year after year, but we never seem to do it…..I tend to “accidentally kill” plants–OOPS!
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
–B.B. (that’s Before Baby), I used to be UBER-crafty…cross-stitch, quilting, scrapbooking….now, I barely have time to read!!
Karen says
Hi Donna,
Happy Monday? How old is your daughter?
Donna N says
Karen—she turns 3 next week…she’s no longer a “baby” but is turning into a major DIVA, with attitude to boot–LOL!!!
Karen says
Aww, happy third birthday to your lil’ diva! Is she a girly girl? I bet it’s so much fun to dress her up!
Stephanie Smith says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? YES! A lipstick! In high school I bought a tube of Revlon’s “Crushed Cherry” lipstick and the first time I wore it, I met a boy. That didn’t work out, thank GOD, but the next time I bought a tube, I met another boy. That also didn’t work out, also thank God! Lol! The third time I bought a tube, I thought to myself, “I’m going to get a boyfriend”, and the first time I wore it, I met my husband! I still have the tube of lipstick, almost 20 years, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be buying another tube! Lol!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? No, I think they look great, but I have big boobs and strapless bras are not comfortable for me.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? No, I have a sewing machine and I used it play with it, but I never got better. I need to find someone that can teach me, but I’m just not ready to put the time in. Unfortunately I have not learned by osmosis!
4. Are you wearing anything green today? A green t-shirt, and I have sparkly green fingernails!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Nail Polish is China Glaze’s “Emerald Sparkle”, I don’t have a shadow, and I also like Urban Decay’s “Stash.”

7. Did you ever get detention in school? Never! I was a good girl!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? No no no! It is not for me. I’m not a nail art kind of girl, but I love it on other people!
9. Are you planting a garden this year? No, I’m going to scatter some wildflower seeds, but that’s about it for this year.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I knit, fairly well, so that’s my craftiness!
Karen says
Hi Stephanie,
Happy Monday! That’s super cool that you can knit well. I do scarves and that’s it. What’s was the coolest thing you ever knitted?
Tami says

Yes, many. I am very superstitious and have so much bad luck I need all the luck I can muster.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
Nope
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
Kinda with the assistance of my husband who is the seamstress in the family.

Yes, green nail polish with shamrocks and lucky gold horseshoes wrapped around them.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
Julep Hannah
6. What does your wallet look like?
It is black and it one of those new ones that stop you from magnetically transferring credit card information and it’s pretty.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Probably but too long ago to remember.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?

Leah G. says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? kind of–it’s a silver necklace my Mom made me with a Celtic symbol on it!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Nope, my shoulders and spine are uneven so I can’t pull it off (you can’t tell in normal clothes).
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? I took a sip and sew class (wine and sewing!) and I made a pillow. That’s all I know how to make at this point which is embarrassing since my Mom was a home ec teacher for 34 years. :)But I can cook and it’s one of my passions, so at least I inherited that.
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Yes, green jeans and a flashing shamrock necklace (true story).
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Essie–any of their greens are lovely for toes. I have the Essie light green on my nails today and it’s a little weird.
6. What does your wallet look like? Teal blue. Fossil.
7. Did you ever get detention in school? nope but I got sent to the principal’s office in Algebra two for wearing my hoodie hood on. The teacher was a skeevy one…he married one of his students. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? Maybe a flower or heart.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Yes, we are lifelong organic gardeners AND we are getting two bee hives. Winter if 5 months long in Boston so we cherish our outdoor time and food we grow. 🙂 We have peaches, cherries, and blueberries too. Planing new strawberries this year.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I do photography and anything crafty related to that (hubby and I used to have a darkroom!) We also make jam and pickles with our own veggies and fruit so that’s crafty (makes GREAT gifts!)
Karen says
Hi Leah,
I have a gardening question for ya. I struggle with white flies. 🙁 They always want to attack my plants! Do you have any tried and true methods of keeping them away?
Niki C. says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? Yes, I carry around a little charm that has significant meaning to me.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Yes, but I’m with you on needing a comfortable bra with them.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? I know how to sew a little, my mom would always sew our Halloween costumes growing up!
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Yep, a green printed shirt!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? I love NARS Larger Than Life Liner in Barrow Street (it’s more of a mint green, but still green)!
6. What does your wallet look like? Black Tory Burch envelope wallet.
7. Did you ever get detention in school? Yes, only once for skipping an assembly. Rebel.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? Nah, it’s not for me.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? I am actually! Once we get some nice weather up in New England, that is.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I’ve made pillowcase ghosts for Halloween, does that count?
Allison C says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
Yes, a $2 bill
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
on rare occasion. Unfortunately, they don’t look that great on me, but oddly I do wear strapless swimsuits
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
I used to sew clothes when I was younger, but it’s too much work especially since clothing is actually less expensive than years ago
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
not now, but maybe later 😉
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
I just bought Maybelline Color Tattoo in Emerald
6. What does your wallet look like?
stuffed with receipts
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
a couple of times because I was late in the morning. My friend who drove was always late
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
why not a flower on the big toe?
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
always
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
I’m a lifelong crafter: making candles, making lipstick, crocheting, making my own bread, marshmallows, jam etc
Karen says
Hi Allison,
That’s super cool that you make lipsticks. Do you put them in molds to make bullets?
Susan S says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
Ehhhh, not really. However, the first time I went to Cleveland to see my ladylove (she’d visited me already), we went to the Natural History Museum, and in the gift shop they had these cute hearts made from semi-precious stones. She got one made of goldstone, and mine is mahogany obsidian. (I adore obsidian.) It’s lived in my purse ever since. 🙂 She lost hers when she got jostled on the bus, so I need to find a new one. I’ll probably include it with the necklace I’m making for her graduation present. (SHE GOT INTO MED SCHOOL! EEEEE!)
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
Nope. Well, I might wear one over a crew- or boat-neck, long-sleeved Lycra shirt, or with a good bolero. Even in summer, I’d rather be covered up.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
When I was three, my mother and grandmother put a needle and thread in my hand and started teaching me to sew. In 2005, I saw someone knitting Continental-style (rather than English, which I can’t do) in the round at a science fiction convention, so I went home and taught myself in an afternoon. The majority of my lifetime income has involved a sewing machine in one way or another, and when I worked in a sewing store, surrounded by women who’d been professionals for longer than I’ve been alive, they couldn’t get over my creativity and skill. In fact, they just about plotzed when I told them about the corsets I used to make, and when I brought in my knitting, it was the center of attention–especially my 6′-wide lace shawl.
So, yes, it’s safe to say I can make clothing. (I crochet, too.)
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
Dude, I’m still in my pajamas. Do green eyes count?
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
I don’t have any yet, but I’m dying to get a bottle of Zoya in Envy–blackened green! Eyeshadow is Aromaleigh’s Maurelle, a deep olivine shimmer that’s part of the now-discontinued Lost in Faerie line; I’m also partial to Aromaleigh’s Bitterness is a Paralytic (Brilliant Deductions) and Razia (Ignis Antiquita). Liner? Still need to get one, but I fell in LOVE with MUFE’s Aqua Eyes in Green. (Yes, just Green.) It’s nearly the color of my eyes, and sets them off like a copper flame.
(I should probably note that copper compounds burn vivid green.)
Oh, and I love Aromaleigh’s Glamoured powder in Alchemilla. It’s a pale grayish-green finishing powder that takes my white-privilege-ahoy corpselike skin to supernaturally pale levels. Sometime, I also want to try Coquille in green; it’s a similar color, but with a hint of mica shimmer. Smashbox’s green primer is nice to have around. As for lips, I want to try SoBe Botanicals’s Verdigris and Poisonous; the first is a warm olive, and the second is a deep, beautifully sinister viridian. I’ve yet to find a green blush, though I’ve used palest green eyeshadow as a highlighter to great effect.
I can’t wear my favorite greens, alas. They’re the colors of my cats’ eyes. 🙂
6. What does your wallet look like?
I had mine custom made by Brandi Mayville of EyeCandyQuilts on Etsy, and I recommend her SO much. Her sewing is impeccable (and remember, I know a little about that myself). My wallet is a quilted tri-fold, with a bunch of pockets for ALL kinds of cards, two large pockets for cash, coupons, checks (which I don’t use), etc. Fabric is black with white skulls, because that’s how I roll, with a lovely abstract red inside and as contrast. I picked the fabrics, and even had the option to send her my own. It’s well-quilted, has held up beautifully for a good two years or so of hard use, and is just plain the best wallet I could ever ask for.
(Just sayin’, but Brandi also makes all kinds of other quilted things. Her shop’s worth checking out!)
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Snerk, are you kidding? Well, technically only once, for getting to my seat a second and a half after the bell rang. I had to eat lunch with my Biology teacher. Ooh, yeah, such misery. We spent the whole time discussing A&P and eating Twizzlers. It was great.
Now, expulsion, OTOH. Ask me how many times I’ve been EXPELLED.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
Oh, yeah. I get my manis and pedis at the beauty college down the street, and I usually just tell my student to go nuts. I’ve had pictures, glitter, you name it. They love me. 😀 (So does my hairdresser. She gets to experiment with new funky dyes, and once gave me a mohawk!)
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
I have no freakin’ clue. As much as I’d like to, it’s a lot of work, and my health doesn’t really let me do much outside. At the very least, I’d like to see what’s available in the way of herbs.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
Um. You’re kidding, right?
At this moment, I have at LEAST a grand in beads and beadwork supplies sitting on my bed. There are more on my desk. The ones on my desk include one lab-grown ruby, six lab-grown sapphires, two Tiffany Stones (which are no longer being mined), and a DIAMOND. I have a loose DIAMOND on my desk, waiting to be set into a piece I’m making. Additionally, I’ve got probably two grand or more in yarn in the cedar cabinet I had to buy in order to hold (not even) all of it, and there’s more in storage, in my closet, and in a trunk across the hall. I have fabric, I have Shrinky Dinks, I have supplies to make maille and chain and I need to get more (yes, I make my own chains!), I’m planning to get some leather next month, and I’m gradually moving into wire and bench work. Oh, and I’m trying my hand at embroidery, and I’d like to learn to make lace like my great grandmother.
I can also cook damn near anything you want. And I’ve written something like ten novels–I need to get back to submitting them.
In my family, you learn to cook, and you learn to sew. No exceptions. Most of us take up additional creative pursuits, maybe one or two. Grandma (Mom’s mom) and I? Took up ALL of them. Man, I miss her. She’d be so happy to see that I finally picked up knitting.
(GAH, sorry for the treatise. Being this wordy is a common trait among women with Asperger’s, and it hit me like a wet shark to the face.)
Karen says
Congrats to your ladylove for getting into medical school, that’s HUGE!
Oh, and craft time at your place sounds like so much fun. I wanna play with the beads! Keep any precious gems away from me, though, because I will lose them.
What was the last thing you made with your beads?
Susan S says
Thank you! =) Still waiting to hear on the PhD program, but I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t qualify.
Heeheehee, there are so many beads in my carpet it’s not funny. And I’m practically going to have biological containment protocols running when it comes time to set the gems. Ugh, how can a chunk of carbon cost so much? (It’s 1.06mm wide. Still a diamond, though!)
Last thing I finished was a fairly simple pair of earrings, just a whip-it-out-in-an-hour project. Other things are in progress, but these are good to go. They’re Baroque-styled, in black seed beads, red triangle seed beads, white pearls that I’ve had forever, and red teardrop dangles. They’re really cute!
Karen says
I went to a science school and was pre-med for about 2 seconds. I couldn’t hack it! I had a bunch of friends who went that route, so I know that it’s hard. Good for her, and I wish her the best of luck!
So…beads. I used to make simple beaded necklaces, and although my collection wasn’t nearly as intense as yours, I enjoyed collecting beads. I think it’s neat that you have a diamond sitting on your desk waiting to be made into something beautiful! AHHH! I so couldn’t do that. It would inevitably end up in that mysterious black hole where all the good jewelry I’ve ever lost ends up.
Speaking of diamonds, have you ever worked with rough, uncut diamonds? I think that those are gorgeous. I’ve seen simple necklaces with rough diamonds strung together on a single strand and there’s something so tough, yet delicate about them.
If you have pics of your jewelry please share! 😀 I enjoy what things people create.
Kiss & Make-up says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? Yes, a Roo figurine, you know, from Winnieh The Pooh 🙂

Aww, when I was child I loved everything that had anything to do with Winnie the Pooh. I still have a soft spot for all of the characters! Is Roo your favorite?
Maria Nunes says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
No! Don’t belive in such things! I believe we make our own destiny!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
Not always, but also use.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
Not! but my mother is a seamstress, and makes me a lot of clothes.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
Hum… no! Sorry but in Portugal St. Patrick is not celebrated
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc
Oh! Yes, definitely. I like green and I have a green shadow and eyeliner that I use with some frequency. It is a color that favors my brown eyes.
6. What does your wallet look like?
The “end of the world in underwear!” (It’s a big mess of papers, cards and unfortunately little money!) 😀
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Not! I’ve always been right and obedient in school!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
Never did, but why not try this summer?
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
Garden not, but I’m honestly thinking in vertical beds of aromatic herbs!
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
Yes, scrapbooking in school notebooks, and did all the memories of my wedding. In Portugal it is customary in weddings offer a reminder to each of the guests, and I made an arrangement with aromatic candles, raffia, potpourri and cellophane …

Hi Maria,
Hello from California!
What part of Portugal are you from? I visited your country once and absolutely loved it. I went to Lisbon! I was there for three days, and wish that I had stayed for longer.
Karen Freeman says
1. Do you have a lucky charm? my iPhone? Not really, but I tote it around as if it has magical powers…
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Rarely. Too fearful of wardrobe malfunctions.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? I can crochet hats and scarves like nobody’s business.
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Of course! Green shirt, green eyeliner, green nail polish. And I had a green smoothie for breakfast.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Urban Decay’s Covet eyeliner
6. What does your wallet look like? Hot pink, Coach
7. Did you ever get detention in school? Never ever. Nerd here, too.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? Never occurred to me. I’m not against it, it just seems like too much trouble.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Nah. Hands dirty? Not my thing.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I did the jewelry beading thing too. I’ll still whip out my old crimping pliers if the situation calls for it…
Kaycee Owens says
1.) Do you have a lucky charm? Yes, I have a tiny wishbone charm that fell off a charm (lol) bracelet that I keep in my wallet hoping it will bring me some luck in the form of cash-flow!
2.) Do you ever wear strapless dresses? I have before, but it makes me nervous because I am well-endowed. Also I don’t think strapless bras do a bit of good for me.
3.) Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? No, but there was a time when I was interested in making my own scrubs. I no longer work in healthcare so there is no need to anymore.
4.) Are you wearing anything green today? I have green eyes of course, but I chose to wear green to work too. I am wearing a green tank with a green and blue scarf.
5.) Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner etc.? Definitely Essie’s “Navigate Her” a gorgeous pastel green.
6.) What does your wallet look like? I carry a small cross-body bag most of the time, so my wallet is a small Michael Kors that fits right in.
7.) Did you ever get detention in school? Yes, for talking too much or not completing my homework.
8.) Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? I enjoy getting a little design on my big toes when I get a pedi, but I think $5 extra for the art per toe is a little extreme.
9.) Are you planting a garden this year? Probably what we do every year, just squash and zucchini since they seem to be pretty hardy vegetables. The deer and rabbits destroy everything else we try to plant.
10.) Have you ever done anything crafty before? In high school I used to decorate whole pages of my agenda with fancy backgrounds and stickers, but that’s as far as my creativity goes.
Esther says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
Nope! I’ve always wanted one, but nothing really did the trick.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
I have, but as the years have passed, it isn’t a flattering style on me since I have small boobs and broad shoulders from playing volleyball.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
No idea.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
I am just wearing green nail polish!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
I really am loving the Revlon Perfumerie Wintermint nail polish right now! Glittery AND smells great! I don’t really wear green eyeshadow and I don’t know if green eyeliner would go with my complexion.
6. What does your wallet look like?
It’s a coral wallet from Coach that has a separate section that my phone can fit in! Very convenient whenever I need to go on a quick trip.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Nope, never! I was really afraid of getting into trouble.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
For my high school prom, the lady did some flowers on my big toes. Other than that, I have not done it myself or gotten it done again.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
I grew hyacinth from a bulb that I bought from Wegman’s, but other than that, I do not have a green thumb.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
I have scrapbook-ed before. I also just finished crocheting an amigurumi, a stuffed whale!!
Karen says
Hi Ester,
Your crocheted wale sounds so cute! How long did it take you to make?! I wish I could do that. I’m terrible at crochet.
Esther says
I would say…it took me a few day. I struggled to remember how to start the body and then didn’t have time to finish everything until a week later. Thankful for this snow day so I had time to finish it!
Karen says
Do you have a pic? I want to see it!
As you can tell I am very envious of this whale, LOL! The only thing I can crochet is a chain. That’s about it.
Shannon says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
I have a “totem,” as my hippy-ish friend in Montana called them – a little bear-shaped, naturally-formed rock that I carry around sometimes 🙂 my friend found it on the beach of a lake, and she solemnly gave it to me for “protection” (because bears are big and strong, yo!) for my move to NYC. Kinda silly, but I like it!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
If they fit right! Haven’t worn one in a while, but I wouldn’t be opposed. Hmm, maybe I need to go shopping…
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
Yup! I’m a little too impatient to sew regularly, but I like to bust out the machine every now and again.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
Yes ma’am! I’m wearing a kelly green t-shirt dress. Happy St. Paddy’s!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
hm, don’t know about the polish… but favorite green eyeshadow is probably the “earth” shade in the bareminerals “the elements” palette, and for a green liner… I’ll go with UD’s stash, too 🙂 love that shade!
6. What does your wallet look like?
It’s pewter-colored leather, and fairly simple. I like it, but it’s a little formal-looking for everyday use.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
Nope! Because I never went to school! BAM. Homeschooled ’til college, yo 🙂
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
I did when I was younger. I’m not super interested in it these days.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
nope. #apartmentdweller, sigh. I’d like to put some herbs on our windowsill, but we desperately need access to the window (it’s our only heat regulator) and herbs would just get in the way. Oh well! I’ve made a pact with myself to get fresh flowers every week, which I’m pretty excited about!
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
Hmmm… I’m gonna count sewing as my crafty thing. I also used to knit, but these days I’m too impatient!
Karen says
Hey Shannon!
So I was thinking about your hair question this weekend. You might want to check out Bumble & Bumble. I was (and still am) a Bumble girl, although I have been using Oribe a lot lately and LOVING it, but my wallet is so not feeling the price. It’s good stuff, though; my color has held up extremely well with it and my hair generally is less unruly.
Anywho, for fine hair with a wave to it, you’re probably wanting something that cleanses and moisturizes the hair without weighing it down. Something like Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Shampoo and conditioner might be a good fit. 🙂
You might also like Bumble’s Surf Foam Wash Shampoo and their Surf Creme Rinse Conditioner. Both are supposed to offer lightweight moisture, as well as enhancing wavy textures.
HTH! Let me know if you need more recs. 🙂

1. Do you have a lucky charm? My lucky charm is a little doll I keep on my desk.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Sometimes.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? No.
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Nope.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Cargo Eye Shadow Single in Yukon (I guess it’s technically green?)
6. What does your wallet look like? Neutral colored fake animal print.
7. Did you ever get detention in school? A lot.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? Yeah.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? No.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? No.
Karen says
That’s cool that you do your own nail art, Lydia. What designs do you typically like to do?
Kate & Zena says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
Um, Zena? I have two sterling silver word necklaces that I wear when I feel like I need a little luck; one says “strength;” the other, “espoir” (French for “hope.”) I bought them from etsy.
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
Um, no. I don’t feel comfortable in them one bit!
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
I can bring up shoulder straps and repair buttons. If it ain’t that….nope. Oh, I can make a pillow?
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
No.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
My favorite green is Illamasqua Rampage because I have a really bad, bad habit of wearing it with Illamasqua Phallic. You know, Phallic Rampage?
Moving on….
6. What does your wallet look like?
It’s a cream hand wallet with blue penguin print from Fossil. It was a limited edition. I <3 it.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
One, and I totally did NOT deserve it. See, I apparently threatened to hit my gym teacher because he was trying to make me play hockey or something (I don't quite remember the whole thing) my sophomore year. Well, at the time, my school didn't have air conditioning and it was a 90+ degree day, so it was hotter inside and I had a heat seizure. If I'm stressed out and then I have a seizure, I can say some really MEAN things I totally will not remember saying. The dean, instead of giving me a suspension (A SUSPENSION), gave me a Saturday morning detention EVEN THOUGH my mom told him I had a seizure AND I had the medical note that basically said, "On this day Katie had a really bad heat seizure and cannot be liable for anything she said, did, blah blah blah."
Ask me if I liked my dean.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
Once and it was very, very, very bad.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
Nope, I have a black thumb. The only thing I seemingly cannot kill is bamboo?
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
I've scrapbooked (which I utterly fail at), but I'm a generally crafty person. I'm currently crocheting a scarf/shawl for my 2nd cousin (who is more like a cousin considering how close her age is to mine) because she is going through chemotherapy treatments. She had a 10 pound tumor removed around Christmas and she's had 2 of 4 treatments done. She has 2 more to do.
But, if you want to know what else I've done, I painted silhouettes of one of my friend's kids recently for a gift exchange, I'm still in the midst of making a paper butterfly mobile (being lazy on that one), crocheted a giant curly flower and a pot holder like thing, I make things with Sculpey clay, made cards…..generally if I find inspiration, I'll try to do it. I have had LOTS of failures.
Karen says
Hi Kate,
Sending you (and your cousin) lots of good thoughts. I’ve seen friends and family members go through chemo and I know it is really hard.
How is my lovely Zena? I hope that she’s doing ok.
Kate & Zena says
Zena’s been well. She was very bad at the vet to get her toenails trimmed, but she has been well otherwise. She went to go visit Grammy at the nursing home/rehabilitation center last week which both she and my grammy enjoyed. She charmed every last nurse. And nuns. She charmed the nuns. I’m not even kidding. She even managed to sway one nun from her rounds and got scratches from her! SERIOUSLY!!! I might as well leave her there! (She wouldn’t do well on a nun’s budget, me thinks.)
Of course, these were nice nuns and not evil mean school nuns (although one nun did have a voice on her and yelled at the rehab dog to get the h*** inside when I went outside to let Zena go potty. Okay, she didn’t curse, but I was scared out of my mind because I had flashbacks to my year in Catholic school. Holy crap!)
I swear that dog fits right into a nursing environment. You know what she did when we were looking for Grammy’s room? She would stick HER HEAD into each open door as if to check to see if everyone was all right. Of course, this got me into trouble two times as two ladies wanted to pet her. I don’t like being talkative so I had to talk (and I consider this trouble!) Plus, a security guard stopped me to talk about her and another guy who was going down to his room who liked her purple, glittery ladybug bandana, thought she was looked like a trickster (she is) and she was elegant. I can’t go ANYWHERE with her without having to talk to somebody!
No wonder Mom calls her my therapy dog! Zena makes sure I interact with people.
My cousin is in Virginia, at probably the best hospital in the US getting care, so we aren’t worried about her. I just chatted with her today, and she hates the cold; she had moved to Venezuela over the summer so she had gotten used to the tropical heat! (Lucky her.) I had caught up with her over the summer after not seeing her for, I think, 14 years. She was 2 the last time I saw her before the summer! Her littlest brothers weren’t even in existence. I even said to my mom, “She has brothers?” because I only knew about her little sister. HA HA HA!!! That’s how much I pay attention to my mom’s side of the family.

Hi Icequeen81,
Are you a teacher? What subjects do you teach?
Icequeen81 says
Hi Karen,
Yes, I am a teacher,I teach Spanish.
Karen says
Oh that’s cool! I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I have a terrible Spanish accent, LOL. I took it for two years in college and got decent grades in the written portion but my oral exams were a mess. What grades do you teach?
Icequeen81 says
I teach Middle school, Indeed most of the students have problems with orals, that is why I make them read at least once a week, sentences, questions with their answers,I give and make interactive classes where they need to speak the language they want it or not , for example , they need to describe the person next to them how they look like, what they are wearing, which color of clothes, or hair etc. They have to speak,
Written is hard to pass cause I’m very strict with accents, spelling etc.
Karen says
Ahh, middle school! I wish I started language classes back then; maybe I would’ve retained more, you know? How long have you been teaching? Do you like it?
Icequeen81 says
have been teaching for four years, Well I love teaching, but love teaching to those students who want to learn. I really love those students who work hard , I am always ready with a helping hand, if needed extra work etc. But sometimes I have to admit the youth of nowadays is not what our generation eighties and earlier used to be speaking as an educator. The children have lack of respect for teachers, they can or know less than what we could do or knew at their same age, I’m talking about knowledge and will power to learn. So sometimes it is difficult, but I do have some of those students who make it worth to stand up every morning and and confront a classroom of 28 students. As teachers we do not only have the task to teach a subject we have the task to educate students as well.
Lauren Sutherland says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
Not particularly. The number 13 is always my lucky number!
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
All the time! and let me tell you it’s even easier now that I’ve begun using the corsetlette I got for my wedding dress with them. NO MORE PULLING THE STRAPLESS BRA UP!
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
Actually yes! I’ve made lots of things I own, but I’m nowhere as good as my mom. She spent 10 months embroidering and making my sisters custom wedding dress, and she’s beginning on mine right now and it has tons of beading and texture detail.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
Nope!

1. Do you have a lucky charm? Whenever I find a 1980 of 1973 penny, I tuck it into my wallet for good luck! 1980 is my birth year and 1973 is my fiance’s. 🙂
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Very rarely, but only because I very rarely wear dresses period! I love the look of a strapless dress.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? I do know how and have made a few items, but not since 8th grade home ec!
4. Are you wearing anything green today? I wore my fave shirt today that happens to be green. Didn’t even realize it was St. Patty’s Day until I heard one of the DJ’s mention it on the radio when I was driving to work!
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? OPI Jade is the New Black is a love, and so is Urban Decay’s Junkie.
6. What does your wallet look like? It’s a pale ballet pink Coach Kristin that I’ve had for years. It’s very soft and gets better with age.
7. Did you ever get detention in school? Oh yeah! Tons of times! I was quite a talkative extrovert back in high school, so I tended to land in kiddie jail a lot for excessive talking and fricking around instead of working!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? I have and I love it!
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Hmm. Probably not. We only have a small deck (no actual land) and I fear the squirrels would have a heyday.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I’m pretty crafty, actually! My favorite thing is creating mood boards and then changing them up when the desire hits me!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Karen, Tabs n’ El Hub!
Karen says
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you too, Kristen! Are you doing anything fun tonight?
kristen @ glambunctious says
Thanks for asking, boo! I didn’t do anything special last night as I’m still recovering from my bachelorette party Saturday night! It takes longer to recover from a night out at a rock club until 3 am when you’re 33 years old, LOL! My ears are still ringing! :O But it was totes worth it! 🙂
Natasha says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?
No. I have hamsas, but I never remember to wear them…
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
No. Not my style.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
I am currently taking a sewing class and working on a badass muumuu! With fluttery sleeves and a big ruffle! Good thing I have a teacher to help me!
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
Yes. Green t-shirt and green eyeliner and shadow.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
I;m really liking MAC’s In the Meadow quartet of shadows which has a lovely spring green and then a deep greenish-khaki. I also like UD’s 24/7 liner in Grafitti which is a grass green — for a sort of reverse liner effect.
6. What does your wallet look like?
Black. Swiss Army. Lots of pockets for cards and cash and passport and stuff. Not beautiful, but it works for me.
7. Did you ever get detention in school?
I got suspended once for getting upset in class that a classmate couldn’t read after 10 years of education — how could the system have failed him?!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
I have done and plan to do again… maybe next week. It’s fun in the summer. I wouldn’t pay to have someone do it, but I like getting out the acrylics and doing flowers on my big toes.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
No. Gardens in SoCal need a lot of water and TLC — not like gardening in the SOutheast where you just put the seeds in and the heat and rain do the rest. Summer is my busy season so I don’t really ahve the time to put in the love a garden needs. I tried last year and it was such a miserable failure… not worth repeating.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
All the time. I draw on fabric, made a scrapbook of our wedding photos, knit when the weather gets cold, decorate lampshades. I used to make jewelry, but found other interests and wandered away from it.
Happy St. Patty’s Day!
Vanessa says
1. Do you have a lucky charm?

2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses?
No. I’m too active for it work. Also, then I’d have to put sunscreen on my shoulders (if it’s summer).
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes?
I can stitch up something simple, but I can’t make anything nice.
4. Are you wearing anything green today?
No! 🙂
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc?
Erg… sorry, don’t have.
6. What does your wallet look like?
It’s cloth, water color, purple and green.

Oh boy yes…
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
No, again, it’s just not practical.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
No, but I’m excited for yours, Karen. Pests killed mine last year and I don’t have the heart to start over…
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
Sure. Make handmade cards all the time.

OK, what the heck:
1. Do you have a lucky charm? not really (I used to think I had a lucky number – 23 – but I don’t even really remember why any more!)
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? No, too big-busted. It would be a disaster!
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? I know how, yes, but I haven’t done it in years and years.
4. Are you wearing anything green today? I was earlier – a blue and green plaid shirt, to match my green nails.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? The polish I had on earlier was ModLacquer Chupacabra, which is green glitter in a black base and I love it. Another favorite is Colorstay Rainforest. I’m sure I could think of some more. (I don’t wear eye makeup any more because I’m hypersensitive to it. Doesn’t that suck?)
6. What does your wallet look like? Purple and black zebra print – my husband bought it for me, but I really like it.
7. Did you ever get detention in school? No, my parents were teachers, I couldn’t get away with anything.
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? I haven’t been wearing toenail polish recently, but sure, I would in theory.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? Probably not. Maybe I’ll get ambitious and surprise myself, though.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? I used to make quilts, but not recently.

7. Did you ever get detention in school?

8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes?
I’ve never done it myself but the pedicure guy usually talks me into getting a flower or some such on my big toe.
9. Are you planting a garden this year?
Oh yes, and I can’t wait. I grow a big mix of herbs, vegetables and flowers. Herbs are probably my most favorite because they smell so great and I love to cook with them. I have lavender, lemon thyme, rosemary, basil and a love/hate relationship with growing cilantro.
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles?
I started a scrapbook when my son was born. I think I have four or maybe six pages done. He is going to be 11 in a few weeks. So, I’m not really a scrapbooker although I have fantasies of having finished his.

1. Do you have a lucky charm? Well, I do have a Lego Yoda on my car keys. I like to think he’s kept me safe on the road. 🙂
2. Do you ever wear strapless dresses? Not like I did 10 years ago! Mostly because I need at least a bustier to keep the girls up.
3. Do you know how to sew or otherwise make clothes? No, I’m terrible!
4. Are you wearing anything green today? Just green nails, Seche Vite and I can’t remember the name of it.
5. Favorite green nail polish, eyeshadow, liner, etc? Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner in Junkie is pretty amazing.
6. What does your wallet look like? Organized. I hate it when I can’t find things!
7. Did you ever get detention in school? God no. I would have been terrified of what my parents would do to me!
8. Have you ever done (or would you ever do) nail art on your toes? I used to occasionally get a flower when I splurged on a pedicure, but these days I prefer plain color.
9. Are you planting a garden this year? No, I’m just trying to keep my ferns and succulents alive. 🙂
10. Have you ever done anything crafty before, like scrapbooking or making candles? A few things here and there. The BF and I plan on building/refurbishing pieces when we get our new place.
