Let Loose in the Open Thread

Published in: Just For Fun

So far my day’s entailed multiple loads of laundry, a trip to the grocery store and a play session with Tabs. Now I’m about to watch the latest episode of Drop Dead Diva (I miss Tony!) over lunch. What are you doing? Can you come say hi in the open thread?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Open ThreadIf you’re new to the open thread, here it is in a nutshell:

Remember when Carrie and the SATC girls would meet for brunches/lunches and catch up while they chowed down? That’s kinda what we do in the open thread. We meet in the comments to chill and chat about makeup, relationships, movies, cats (LOL!), food — you name it. Please feel free to reach out to me or to anyone else, too, because everyone here is really nice.

It goes on all day and night, so stop by if/when you can, and as often as you’d like.

Oh! Here are a few pictures I took yesterday of products I’ll be reviewing soon…

Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect Shadow in Khaki, $7

L’oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolor Stars Collection lip compacts, $11 each.

Wet ‘N’ Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Singles clockwise from left: Lagoon, Envy and Kitten, $2 each

See you in a few!

    Hey Karen!!

I am having a laaaazy Sunday – I have a bazzillion chores to do but I am severely procrastinating the weather here in NY sucks humid humid humid and hot – yesterday I loafed around the pool in my building and got a little tan. I was looking pretty pale for being midsummer. Jazmine is being moody and decided not to love me and is only loving her cat dad

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yadi!

Lazy Sundays are the best, aren’t they? I’m trying to get through a few chores myself ((sigh)).

You’re lucky the pool is open! Ours has been closed all summer. They’re rebuilding the pool house and at the rate they’re going it probably won’t be done until December.

Speaking of moody cats, Tabs has been acting out as of late. When he isn’t ignoring me he’s biting my elbows or swiping at my ankles. I think the hot weather makes him NUTS!

What’ve you been up to this summer? Have you gone on any trips?

      • Nina says:

Y’know what – Linus has been acting weird around Mojo these days. I mean with me hes all sweet and clingy especially when im brushing him. But there have been instances where Mojo passes him and he Linus takes a swat at Mojo. Weird.

I’m thinking I need to get out of bed and get my butt to Sephora like I planned to this weekend.

  3. Jessica says:

I made the DUMBEST beauty decision this weekend.
I needed to dye my hair this week. While browsing Wal-Mart with my boyfriend, I decided to stray from my usual deep red because I was distracted by a box of bright blonde hair colour.

    BAD DECISION

I ended up with about 5 varying colours of brown, red, blonde orange and white. Its the worst!
I’ve be agonizing over it for days now.

    • Karen says:

OH NO! Do you still have the box? They usually have a help number on their for things like this.

You could also try hitting up a salon that specializes in corrective color.

  4. AshBash says:

it’s about to rain. hard. and that’s ok because it’s been over 100 degrees. i went to family dollar and picked up a new body wash and mane n tail shampoo and conditioner (late pass for just now trying this for the first time). i was doing laundry and watching jersey shore but mtv went out on me. now im doing laundry and watching phineas and ferb. what can i watch when this goes off?

    • Karen says:

I vote for The Real World. If your mind needs to space out you can’t go wrong with that series!

Mane n Tail fascinates me! I wonder if you can actually use it on horses.

  5. Tiffany says:

Happy Sunday! Who else is excited for true blood tonight?!

I just finished the first Sookie Stackhouse book so I need to start the 2nd one soon!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Tiffany!

The books are a fun, fast read. I made it through three of ‘em before getting burnt out. They’re totally different from the show!

I’m so stoked about tonight’s ep. I hope Tara finds a way to escape crazy Franklin’s clutches!

      • Tiffany says:

        I like that they’re different so I don’t know what’s coming!

Yeah I like the idea of Tara breaking free! I am so over Sam’s storyline though.

        How was your weekend, Karen?

      • Karen says:

Sam’s storyline needs to pick up some speed, asap. I am very curious, though, about his weirdo dad.

My weekend’s been good! I managed to get through some chores I’ve been putting off and hit the movies last night (Salt… it was just okay). I’d like another day, though, to just veg and do nothing!

How was yours? Do anything fun?

        • Tiffany says:

Aww, I was hoping salt would be great!

Yesterday was my veg day. Friday night we went to a fancy hotel bar to celebrate my in-laws anniversary. The people watching was awesome. And today we are hanging with my fam!

        • Karen says:

Salt wasn’t bad, but it was no Bourne identity (there was a lot of foolishness in the story and stunts). It might be good for a rental once it comes out on DVD if you want something mind numbing.

Oooh, did you get to dress up on Friday?

          • Tiffany says:

Rental for sure! So much cheaper that way ( I loooove netflix!)

I did dress up! I did a cute white dress with coral lipstick! I love excuses to dress up!

          • Karen says:

Your outfit/makeup sounds summery and cute! I love an excuse to get dressed up too… especially when it comes to shoes, heh!

  6. I am excited about True Blood! I was drooling over that photo of Alcide in Karen’s post last week, but I am totally Team Eric. On the flipside of that, I just gave in to peer pressure and started watching Season 1 of Mad Men last night. I sense another TV addiction.

    Hi everyone!

I’ve spent the day cleaning and trying out recipes. It has actually been a lot more fun than it sounds :)

    • Karen says:

      Hi Terri,

That sounds like a lot of fun to me. What recipes did you try out?

      • Terri says:

I made a pasta salad with roasted veggies (cherry tomatoes and zucchini) and I have a zucchini and ricotta galette in the oven right now.

On a beauty-related note, I finally got the Clinique mascara you recommended (Clinique Lash Power), and I LOVE it! The first day I wore it, I got caught in the rain, and it didn’t budge.

      • Karen says:

YUM! Both sound so light and summery.

So glad to hear you liked Lash Power. It ROCKS!

  8. Beth says:

I’m looking forward to your reviews of the Boots No7 single eyeshadows. I think these are really pretty shadows, not hugely pigmented but just enough to give you a wash of colour for an easy day look.

I have 14 of them (which I think is almost all the shades they do) because over here Boots very often run a promotion where they give you a voucher for £5 off any No 7 item and these are only about £6.50 each at full price.

The usual setup with the vouchers is you get one whenever you spend £5 and as I buy lunch in there most days (they do food too!) I always end up with tons of vouchers to use. They’re like rabbits – they breed! :)

    Heyy Karen!
Greetings from Greece! I’ve been trying so hard to find some good makeup here.. but there’s nothing good!! And plus, it’s so expensive.. 15-20 euro for a drugstore mascara! That’s insane. With that money I might as well buy myself some Dior, haha.
It’s ok though, I’ll save my money and buy the new Naked palette instead! Is it permanent or limited edition? I’ve been getting mixed information..

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yiota,

Greetings from the Bay. :) Since you’re in Greece, will you please drink a few sour cherry sodas so I can live vicariously through you? I sure love those things.

As for the Naked palette, I’ve heard from Urban Decay PR that it’s going to be permanent.

      • Ezra says:

YES! Sorry to intrude but that Naked Palette is callin’ my name, but it’s been sold out everywhere I go :( I’m happy it’s permanent!

      • yiota says:

Ooh I haven’t had a sour cherry soda.. only Fanta! I normally just drink water though.
I know, I thought it was permanent also then I got an email from Sephora that featured the Naked palette and it said Limited Edition and that just confused me!

      • Karen says:

I picked one up randomly at this stall that sells Greek food at the farmer’s market a couple weeks ago. I rarely drink soda, but this tasted SO GOOD!

  10. natalie says:

Hi, Hope everyone is having a great sunday! :)
Has anyone tried out the new UD Naked palette? Worth getting?

  11. Beth says:

Happy Sunday to you too – I’m sorry, that was totally rude of me not to ask how your weekend was! I hope you’re having a great one :)

I really like Opal, which is a super-pale, opalescent pink, Truffle which is a gorgeous chocolate brown and Wheatsheaf, which is a lovely beige. Pacific green is beautiful too, sort of a pale aqua with a blue shimmer through it.

The only ones I’m not so keen on are Comet (dark grey) and Oyster (taupe) because they’re glittery rather than shimmery and there’s quite a bit of fallout. It’s not the worst fallout ever, but when you’re rushing in the morning it’s an extra thing to have to fix so I tend to skip them unless I’ve got the time to do a good job with it.

Have you got a few of the colours, or is it just khaki at the moment?
Beth recently posted … Tresemme Waterless Foam Shampoo – Dry Shampoo Review

    • Karen says:

      Hi Beth,

      Oh, no worries! :)

Right now I only have Khaki, but Truffle and Pacific Green both sound like my style. I hope my nearby Target has ‘em in stock.

I wore Khaki to the movies last night, but by the time I got home about half the color had faded. I think it might be because I forgot to apply primer beneath. Hopefully that’ll make a difference, because the color’s gorgeous.

  12. Jessica says:

The BF and I are thinking of doing the Master Cleanse. Has anybody done it before?

    • Karen says:

I’d like to hear about people’s experiences too! I dunno if I have the willpower though, LOL!

    • DancerWendy says:

I have done it:) I think it’s great! I’m a ballet dancer and I was able to dance as I normally would and had the energy to sustain my endurance. It works best to follow everything exactly as prescribed, but for my active lifestyle I allowed myself to drink as much of the lemonade as I felt I needed. The evening tea plus the morning salt water really work, haha! If you are thinking of starting the first time, I suggest taking a few days to slowly get your body clean by cleansing yourself out with tons of fruits and veggies, it will make the cleansing easier if you are not used to it. It will make you feel great!

And hi Karen! This is my very first time posting on your bolg, but I have been a fan for quite a while now. I love MBB! I am a dancer in NYC, and I have an American Bulldog mix named Spot. Give Tabs a hug for me:)

      • Karen says:

        Hi Wendy!

It’s great to meet you. :) What kind of dance do you do? I used to do hip hop, but haven’t been actively taking lessons for about a year.

Tabs says “Meow”! Have a good week.

        • DancerWendy says:

Karen, I am a ballet dancer:) I took one hip hop class years ago and I sucked at it. It’s really cool to watch though… you should get back in to class!

  13. Deirdre says:

Beth- food in Boots? that is soo odd! Even in the bigger branches in Ireland and NI I haven’t ever seen that!

I’m starting to organise for my Graduation Ball from secondary school but I’m utterly stuck on my makeup! I was really considering a strong lip and a neutral eye because my lips are very full but my eyes are a little small! I just don’t know what lip stick to buy!

    • Beth says:

Really? That’s so strange, I thought they’d do it everywhere. In almost all the stores in England I’ve been in they do. It’s not a massive range, but its a lunch offer they do – sandwiches, snacks and drinks. it’s handy for me because I’d have to buy lunch anyway and so I may as well get some advantage points out of it! :)

What colour is your dress for the ball?
Beth recently posted … Tresemme Waterless Foam Shampoo – Dry Shampoo Review

      • Deirdre says:

It’s so hard to explain, it’s this greeny/teal colour… my sister said it emerald but I don’t really think it is! Everytime I look at it I love it even more!lol

I don’t think I’d be able to buy my lunch in Boots though, too much temptation to spend money for food on make up!hehe

        • Beth says:

I know the exact colour you mean – its really pretty but really hard to describe! I’m sure the girls here will have some great recommendations for a good lip colour. It may be worth trying a few to see how you get on.

I have to say, buying lunch in boots is a blessing and a curse because I do end up going “Oh, I’ll just get this while I’m here…hence my bathroom is heaving with stuff!” I’m a Boots-aholic :D

          • Deirdre says:

I’ll be testing them out like mad!

I love Boot but we don’t have a very big branch where I live and we don’t have counters like Estee Lauder, we just have all the cheapie brands :( But their prices are always great and they always have such great offers!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Deirdre,

Your dress sounds pretty! Do you anticipate getting your picture taken at the event? You may want to go with a little shimmer on the lid paired with a matte neutral in the crease along with matte cheeks and lips. Mattes in general tend to photograph really well, but the trick is to blend out the edges so the color looks seamless.

For the color of your dress maybe try a matte pink or coral lip, matte pink or coral cheeks and a shimmery gold on the lid with either a beige or brown in the crease? If you want to go bolder on the eye you could always add thick cat liner on the top lash liner and some false lashes too.

      • Deirdre says:

Karen, thanks for the advice because it’s brilliant and so helpful! I really want to give false lashes a go so now’s my chance! All for the purpose of research in advance!
I can picture what I’d use for my eyes straight away, I can see my creaseless cream shadows coming in well!
Which lipsticks do you rate best for staying power? I was considering Chanel, but I’m not sure! I’m really willing to splurge a little on my makeup since my sister bought my dress as a birthday present(there’s nothing better than sisters!)

        • Karen says:

          Hi Deirdre,

I like MAC and Chanel. If you want your lipstick to last you could also try picking up a lip pencil, too. Use it to line and fill in your lips, and then pop the lipstick on top. It should last you a long time!

I’m a newbie at hair color :(

Here are my utterly random contributions to the open thread:

I polished off a jar of Nutella last night with a spoon while reading Vanity Fair. Fabulous!

I am doing laundry, went to the gym, grilled chicken for dinner later while I cleaned the pool and will be heading out on a 9-mile bike ride with the Mr. in about an hour. I did not/will not enjoy any of those things but do feel virtuous for having accomplished them, lol.

I had a fun time buying too much makeup this week. Haulage include Rouge Volupte Perles in Beige Caresse and Coral Sun, Lancome Art Liner in Ice Black & La Lacque Faver in Lucent Nude. All the lippies are beautiful.

I can’t wait for True Blood and both kittehs sat on my head in bed this morning. That is all.

    • Haley says:

Ugh.. I’m really craving nutella, now.. But I overdosed on popcorn earlier so maybe that isn’t the best idea.

      • Nina says:

I kinda overdid it on the popcorn at the movie theatre too but … how could I not? The concession stand had various popcorn flavor shakers to choose from and mixing ranch with parmesan garlic made my popcorn so much better! :D

    • Terri says:

I have to make a dessert for a friend’s birthday this week, and I’m tempted to try out a Nutella frosting recipe.

    • Karen says:

      Hey MKDallas!

Nice haul, babe. Oh yeah — this morning Tabs decided to set up shop on my neck. I was… interesting!

I have a jar of Nutella in my cupboard waiting to get some lovin’…

  17. Arianne says:

    Hey Karen!

How are you and King Tabs?

I pretty much spent the whole weekend as a date weekend with BF. We have been biking around town and it has been really fun reconnecting. :) Sometimes you just get caught in these ruts where you just want to stay home and not do anything, so it has been a breath of fresh air (quite literally!). Today was especially gorgeous by the lake in Toronto.

Have you tried any Kiehl’s products? I went in to a Kiehl’s boutique for the first time yesterday and picked up their Lip Balm in Coconut and a Restorative Dry Oil. So far I am loving both — great texture and scent. :) I’m hoping the oil will cure the alligator legs.

You live near SF right? BF and I are going to be in Fairfield, CA for several days in August and we’re planning out things to do, places to eat at, etc. Any recommendations? OH, and good beauty shopping LOL (it’ll be our little secret!).

Randomness of the weekend–ate at a Joe’s Crab Shack (“funny name for a restaurant, bad name for a health clinic”–the BF), managed to spend UNDER $50 at Target, and am gearing up for Mad Men Season 4!!!!!!! I’m just a teeeeeensy bit excited. :) Oh also I saw my friend perform on the Today Show on Friday–he just joined John Mayer’s band. Woot!

In terms of beauty related stuff, I totally bought this new perfume on an impulse–it’s from Givenchy and it’s pretty new, I think it’s called “Le Ange Ou Demon le Secret” or something fancy shmancy like that. All I know is that it’s the first floral I’ve tried that doesn’t turn gross on me after 5 minutes (I’m more of a spicy oriental person apparently).

Hope you’re having a good day Karen!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Elle,

How was Joe’s? There’s one here in SF and I’ve always wondered about it.

Oh, and that’s great news for your friend. What instrument does he play? Random John Mayer story: I saw him perform in SF before his first album broke. My friend and I muscled our way to the front of the stage, and during the show JM and I locked eyes smiled at each other. LE SIGH!

I’ve been wondering about that scent! Will have to make a note to self to smell it when it comes out.

Can’t wait for Mad Men, WOOT!

      • Elle says:

        Hi Karen!

I liked Joe’s–we got the crab nachos (really good in my opinion) and we split one of the huge steampots–it had dungeness crab, alaskan crab, corn on the cob, potatoes, and andouille sausage. It was all really good–it is a little far from the city so I don’t know when we’d go back–and it’s kinda wacky since they make the waiters dance around to the music. :)

LOL, love the Mayer story! That’s too funny. Was he good live? I have yet to see him concert but that will probably change soon…I really want to get on the Mayer cruise thing he does. Haha! My friend plays trumpet and he’s always done more jazzy-type stuff so it will be interesting to see how he likes it.

I think you’d like the scent–I remembered that I wanted to get that Chloe fragrance that you reviewed as well since that was another floral I really liked!

And yup, an hour til Mad Men for me…I just read the description and it said “Don makes a mistake that could jeopardize the new firm”. Oh noes!

        • Elle says:

Oh another random thing about this week–I’ve discovered that I apparently like Hanson. Go figure.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmG0DqhfDbY

        • Karen says:

He was. I saw him twice before he got really popular. Yeah, from what I remember he was good. What’s the deal with the cruise? Does he go on a cruise and invite his fans or something?

OK, I looooove Chloe, so I’ll probably like that scent too. I wish the name wasn’t so darn long, though!

          • Elle says:

            http://www.mayercraftcarrier.com/

It’s an interesting concept. My best friend swears she’s gonna get us on the Mayercraft. LOL.

The name IS long! I think when I first smelled it the guy handing out the strips was just saying “Secret” each time someone passed by.

Haha, I never liked Hanson before, but I saw that video on VH1 and couldn’t get the song outta my head. :)

Just got home from watching Inception. OMG. It was quite a thrill ride, and I loved it.

Beauty related stuff wise – can we say yay for the UD Naked Palette? :D Awesomeness!

    • Haley says:

I loved Inception, too! And I ordered the Naked palette online.. Can’t wait to get it, I’m so excited!

    • Karen says:

I liked it a lot but felt it was about 30 minutes too long. I also wished that the tension would’ve ebbed and flowed more; I was tense the entire time and would’ve liked some relief, LOL!

Weren’t the fight scenes in the hallway so cool?

      • Haley says:

Yeah, the hallway fight scenes were awesome! What’s cool about them is that they actually built a hallway set that rotated.. No CGI or special effects for the turning hallway!

        • Nina says:

That is awesome – no CGI is always a good thing. Ive always felt a lot of the recent movies relie too heavily on CGI.

        • Karen says:

That’s so cool! I bet they took a really long time to choreograph.

There were lots of really innovative things going on visually with that movie…

      • Nina says:

Totally agree w/ you … it shoulda ended after the snowy scene or after the airport scene to my mind (tryin’ not to give anything away here…) ….

I was tense the entire time too … Hubs said I was fidget eating LOL.

        Wasnt Marion C. hawt?

She’s gorgeous! You could put her in a potato sack and she’d still work it.

          • Nina says:

Even if her character was a bit like a pesky fly …. I couldnt get irritated at her because of those eyes. Plus she was totally smexy! :)

Ellen Page was cute too … kinda grown-up-ish. :)

          • Karen says:

I had a minor issue with Juno (LOL). There was something about her character that bugged me — maybe she wasn’t given enough to work with? Or she was miscast? I can’t quite figure it out. I wanted her to do more.

      Hi Kiana,

Wow! I’m still waiting for it… hopefully those booties aren’t hairy, yikes!

My weekend went by way too fast. :( I’m not ready for it to be over.

How was yours? Did you do anything fun?

      • Kiana says:

My weekend was pretty awesome I might say :) Just enjoying the last hurrah of summer before school starts again. Boo. Some days I wish being a hippie was an actual job.

And because its a certain waxed individual I will say that said butt was not hairy at all. Just toned. Very toned. Rofl

    hi Karen! :D
it’s officially Monday on my side of the world and our President will give his State of the Nation Address later.. 3 guesses on where i am now (if you follow current events)! :D

*sigh* i wish Wet n’ Wild (and Milani and NYX) will decide to put stalls here in my city.. it would be so much effortless and hassle-free for consumers other than those living in the West! :)

and oh, can i just say that it was because of you why i finally found my HG mascara? :D Stila’s Lash Visor FTW! \m/

Hey everyone! Does anyone have any recommendations for what to try out from NYX? I’m looking into ordering online from the brand. Any certain products, shades, etc.. I have light/medium skin for reference.

    • Hey Haley! I really like NYX’s jumbo eye pencils in Milk and Black Bean. Milk makes shadows pop, and Black Bean is a great base for smokey eyes. I’d also recommend trying out some of their eyeshadows. My favorite one is Black, it’s just a nice pigmented matte black which I like to use in the outer corner, or to set my liner.

    Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had tried Mally make up?
It is quite new to the UK and I wondered what people thought of it?

    Thanks

Just sitting here watching and admiring my cat Fanny. She’s a rescue who lost one of her back legs and tail after having been caught in the fanbelt (hence the name “Fanny”…I know…kinda sick…I didn’t name her!) of a truck at a regional airport when she was a kitten. I used to be quite involved in animal rescue, and have a particular sympathy for the handicapped ones, so was contacted and asked if I would give her a home about eight years ago. She’s been with me since. She’s a beautiful little girl…smoky grey and white and her fur is as soft as a bunny. I admire her because she has no idea she’s missing a couple of things, therefore can do almost anything the other cats do and nothing much stops her. I just watched her climb from the floor to a chair to a table to a window, so she could watch the birds. She can run pretty fast when she’s gonna get meds for anything, too. :) Never underestimate the handicapped cats & dogs!
