Wedding Palette Auditions: Stila Cover Look No. 2

Published in: Face of the Day (FOTD)

Heya, girlies! Thanks for your feedback on potential makeup looks I could wear to my friend Jen’s upcoming wedding in November. For this go ’round of Wedding Palette Auditions I thought I’d try a gold eye with light cheeks and pink lips using another Stila palette, Cover Look No. 2. Let me know your thoughts.

I found Cover Look No. 2 on BeautyCrunch.com on sale for $15.20 (originally $40). It’s all about gold and combines the shade with peach, pink and taupe.

Lame eyeshadow: a shimmery cool gold
Oasis eyeshadow: a shimmery peachy gold
Coin eyeshadow: a shimmery peachy-taupe with gold flecks
Tint cheek color: a matte peach
Enchanting lipgloss: a shimmery peachy pink gold

Most of us felt the look with Stila Cover Look No. 4 didn’t pack enough oomph, so to bump up the drama with this look I added a thick line of MAC Fluidline in Graphic brown on the top lash line. On the lips, I layered MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Speak Louder beneath the Stila lipgloss.

What do you think?

I like the idea of the look, but I dunno if it’s “the one.” What do you think of the pink lips? I think it might be a little too disco for a church wedding. Don’t get me wrong — I’m usually pro-disco lips (WOOT!), but maybe not this time.

Do you think I should turn it up? Tone it down? Maybe I’ll just show up in clown costume and makeup…

Some Cats Aren’t Cool

After I got home from work yesterday, I opened the front door to air the place out. I was sitting at my computer desk with my back to the door, reading beauty news and surfing the web.

That’s when I heard a sound coming from the kitchen — crunching, and like something being dragged across kitchen tiles. I figured Tabs had come in and was eating from his bowl of Friskies and didn’t bother to look…

Until the crunching turned into smacking and the dragging turned into what sounded like some monster destroying the kitchen.

It wasn’t Tabs.

Instead, it was his nemesis, the starved calico who lives next door. It’s nearly feral and hisses at anything that moves. The thing had crept in behind me to steal some of Tabs’ Friskies.

Normally, I like all animals, but this cat is consistently mean to me, hissing and lunging at my legs whenever it sees me outside. I shooshed it out, but not before snapping a picture…

For the record, I do not intend to steal this cat.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

It looks gorgeous, the lip color is amazing. I’m not sure if it’s wedding safe since I’ve never been to one though, so I’m not very experienced there, lol!

Aww, that cat is cute. It’s a shame that it’s so mean. There’s a gray cat that comes around my garden every now and then and it has HUGE eyes, it meows right outside my window at 6am (it doesn’t wake me up, I either haven’t slept by then or have already woke up) but when I go out to see it it runs away. :(

  2. Karen B says:

Looks great. The lips look a bit too much though for an afternoon wedding. I love the eye look though!

    Karen-
That cat looks somewhat like my Sasha. Can’t be cuz ole Sasha is dead. I must warn you that Calico’s have STRONG personalities borderline crazy!! Happy Tuesday!!

    Tania

  4. Judy says:

I’m not a big fan of this look – the lips are way too much for me. Why don’t you try a classic look with a nice smokey eye & red lips? I think that would look gorgeous. Good luck!

  5. Trisha says:

Aww, that poor pretty cat. A neighborhood cat did that once. It came into the house, and our cat, Liberty, immediately chased it out.

She’s a good guard cat. No messing with her!

  6. Glosslizard says:

I like the eye look! I’m wanting a more peach/coral lippie to go with it, though. You have such the gorgeous coloring for these looks, I can’t help but think of all the peach/gold combos that I can’t pull off! ;)

LOL! At first I thought “What’s Princess Lily doing in Karen’s kitchen?” but then I noticed that the eyeliner on your invader isn’t nearly as fabulous as PL’s! :D

  7. Evie says:

I like this look more than the last one, definitely. The lip looks good, but against a gold dress it could easily be too much. Maybe switching to a lipstick that’s a bit more muted and more on the side of plum or berry or even browned red would tone it down a bit.

    Hi Karen:-)
I read your blog every day, but dont comment too often because I dont get a chance to!
I think with a gold dress, you could pull off a lightly smokey brown eye with hints of copper..such as a light sweep of Amber Lights from MAC. Nothing too drastic, but just so it accents your eyes with a bit of smudged brown liner (and mascara, of course!). A light peachy-tan blush and a clear gloss would go well with it.
Just a thought:-). You’re beautiful anyway, so whatever you wear will look great!
    Keep blogging!

I liked the last look better, though the pink lips in this one looks great. Something about the dirty gold is unsettling for me…

I for one, am scared of cats. Tabs is the only cat I have ever found that I thought looked cute. Just like my bff’s dog Bambi is the only cute dog for me. I am just generally scared of cats and dogs. Cats more than dogs..

I think I like the other look more for the wedding. This one is great for a night out, but I’m not sure about an afternoon wedding…

  11. Brittany says:

I definitely like the first look better. This one is pretty, but I’m just not feeling it as much. I also think that the lips are a little too pink.

The cat is cute, despite it’s evilness :P I have a huge orange cat that likes to hang out on my porch, but every time he sees me he starts hissing and fluffs up this fur and stuff like I’m going to kill him. I don’t know what his deal is, haha.

  12. Jenni says:

Hi Karen! I read your blog daily and I’m coming out of the shadows to comment!

I have this palette. I LOVE it. I love it so much that I ordered a second one for when I finish this one! Beautycrunch loves me. I have no control on their site!

  13. Amanda says:

    I have and love oasis-such a great gold. :-)

I like the eyes here-a lot! I think adding a fluidliner is a great idea, especially if the weather is hot and/or humid. What about switching to a lipstick that is more peach or brown instead of pink? looking back I love the stay in touch cremesheen on you. You could then use just a light touch of gloss for a LITTLE oomph. (those it glosses, while fab, are thick….)

as for the crazy calico, aw, poor girl. She might be mean and wild, but I still feel bad that she’s hungry. I’m sure Tabs didn’t mind sharing some grub….

  14. Jessica says:

    Here’s my 2¢ worth…

I’m not loving this look. I just don’t feel these colors do you justice. I’m actually digging the pink lips (they’re lively!), but I’m not enjoying the eye and lip colors together. The eye colors are pretty as swatches, but they create a surprisingly basic eye look.

I’ve always pictured classic and glamourous make-up being the most apropos for weddings. That’s why I think a nice classic smokey eye would be amazing on you – then you could match your lip color to the time day the wedding and reception will take place. A nude, sexy lip route would be perfect for a sunset wedding, the classic va va voom red lip route for more of a night time wedding, or lovely peach/light coral lip for sunny afternoon wedding.

Funny thing about your cat situation…It would seem I recently “stole” a cat myself. Those neighborhood cats, I tell ya!

  15. yen says:

not so wild about this look…
    a little too much oomph

  16. Almira says:

Hmm, I think the pink lips are good for a wedding. But that’s on you. Your skin pigmentation > mine by faaar. I’m white as a sheet, and it would just be way too much on me xD

    Almira´s last blog post..Sleep! UGH!

  17. Holly says:

    Hi Karen,

I like this look but dont love it, im definately favoring auditionee number one! Its so cute that you are putting so much thought into your makeup for the day I hope my friends are that sweet if I ever get married lol!

Out of interest have you checked out the NARS Holiay 2008 collection yet?? I had a little peek on the internet and it looks pretty interesting but have yet to get my paws on it in the flesh! Im particularly liking the look of the new version of Orgasm blush – you know how I love that blush, i cant turn down a new version!!

  18. Tami says:

    Hey Karen,

I like the eyes, but I’m not feeling the lips with it. I think you would look great with peaches/browns..

  19. tatiana says:

I love the lips but I think this is more of a Spring wedding look but then again I don’t know how the dress looks like.

  20. lexi says:

i love the eyes – don’t know if i’m feeling the lips. have you audtitioned palette #3? since you are wearing a gold dress how about a complimentary color on your eyes like violet/purple with a rose lip?

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Lexi,

Yeah, I wore it a few weeks ago in this face of the day. That’s a good idea to pair purple/violet with the dress. I’ll have ruminate on that one. How’s your day been? Are you and your baby girl getting in some good mom/daughter time?

I know it’s only Tuesday, but I’m so ready for Friday!

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Tatiana,

When I pick it up I’ll post a pic. It’s pale gold, strapless and A-line. It’s a cooler gold, rather than warm.

I just pray that it fits… I’ve been neglecting the fitness for the past few weeks. EEK!

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Ellery,

How sweet! You have a cat serenading you at your window. Does Babycake get jealous?

I love weddings… and not just for the free food and drink, LOL! I think they’re pretty fun. :)

  24. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

Yeah, I’m thinking that you’re right. I will probably save this pink lip look for a night look. :)

    How’s your week been going?

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Tania,

Aw, I’m sorry to hear about your Sasha. How long did you have her for?

This Calico kitty definitely has a strong personality. I think it’s going to take a lot of work to befriend her. She’s not as easy going as Tabs, although the two seem to get along.

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Judy,

I thought about that, but I’m afraid it might be too much for an afternoon church wedding. I do *love* both smokey eyes and red lips. You can always depend on the classics.

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Trisha,

What a cute name for a kitty! What does Liberty look like?

  28. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

LOL! Maybe Princess Lily is secretly posing for the camera in other blogs. Maybe she’s already an internet star! :)

Most excellent call on the coral lip. I dunno why I didn’t think to try that right off. Must be the no sleep thing!

  29. Karen says:

    Hi Evie,

Great ideas. :) I am going to give this one again just for fun, and then pair it with a whole bunch of lip shades.

  30. Karen says:

    Hi Vanessa H.,

Thanks for this look idea and for popping by to say hello! I think I’m going to try that one, too.

Believe it or not, I’ve yet to pick up Amber Lights. This gives me an excuse to get it. ;)

  31. Karen says:

    Hi Indian Girl,

I think you’d like Tabs. If you ever got to meet him you’d find him very affectionate and gentle. :)

I think I’m going to save this pink lip combo for a clubbing night!

Hope you’re having a good week so far. Anything exciting going on with you?

  32. Karen says:

    Hi Susan,

I think you’re right. The lips make it a lil’ too night on the town!

Back to the drawing board — but that’s half the fun! :)

  33. Karen says:

    Hi Brittany,

Yeah, I’m feeling the same way about the lips now. I’m having fun trying different things for the event… it’s interesting how looks you think might work sometimes look *completely* different in photos.

Yeah, this calico is the same way! It hisses every time it sees me. The weird thing is that Tabs totally gets along with her. He was hanging out right outside the door when she sauntered in to eat his grub!

  34. Karen says:

    Hi Jenni,

Girl, I am so with you! I check it practically every day. Are you a big Stila fan, too?

Oh, and have you applied Oasis with a wet brush? It’s gorgeous!

  35. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda,

Oasis is fantastic! What do you pair it with?

That’s a great idea to try it with Stay in Touch. Maybe I’ll play with this again, and then top it off with just a lil’ bit of coral gloss.

I feel really bad for this cat. It’s always very jumpy and it has attacked Tabs’ food on several occasions. I really hope that the neighbor is caring for her and giving her love.

  36. Karen says:

    Hi Jessica,

I’ve thought about doing a smokey eye, but truth be told, I’m pretty much guaranteed to cry! I’ve known my BF for 20 years, so I’ll probably get emotional at some point in the ceremony or the reception. Maybe if I could find a way to make it waterproof…

I like to think that Tabs adopted me, LOL! What’s your kitty’s name? And what does he/she look like?

  37. Karen says:

    Hi Yen,

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m thinking of doing a lighter lip, or perhaps a peachy/coral one.

  38. Karen says:

    Hi Almira,

Yeah, I hear ya. Have you been in any weddings yet? Believe it or not, this is my first one (besides my own).

  39. Karen says:

    Hi Holly,

Awww, you know I’m still hoping that you get married to a cute, American Boy in SF so I can meet you!

Regarding the Nars release, I’ve seen the pics online, but have yet to see it in person. I’m hoping to get to the city soon to see the collection in person. I just gotta get through this week without losing my shizz (been crazy busy at work). I’m pretty excited about the Super Orgasm blush, too. The original one doesn’t really register on my skin, so I’m hoping this one does.

  40. Karen says:

    Hi Tami,

Thanks for the idea! Yeah, I didn’t realize how the lips were off until after I saw the picture on my computer. Maybe I’ll do this again with a different lip, hmmmmm…

  41. Erica says:

I love the eyes! But I am not so sure about the lip color. Maybe possibly a lighter pink? Or maybe a light peach color?

  42. Karen says:

    Hi Erica,

:) Thanks! I am with you on the lip color… I didn’t realize how *pink* it looked until afterwards. I’m thinking peach or a coral for the lips!

  43. Dao says:

Girl, I’m going to skip all of other people’s comments and give you my own: the lip color does not go with the eyes! There, I said it, now you can shoosh that cat toward me :P

The eyes are really pretty, I love the combo. Maybe you need to try High Tea instead and amp up with some lip gloss (Pleasure Principle lustreglass, maybe?)

That cat has a long tail. I’ve never seen a cat with such a long tail like that before. Once upon a time there was a cat who came to our place like Tabs, that was when I was a wee kid. Mom used to give him a plate, he came at night, ate his food, slept, and left. He was so quiet and nice that everybody thought he was a house cat. Then there were this bunch of bandits that came through the kitchen windows, ate our fried fish, and pooped in our brand new bed. After that my dad put up all the screens to the windows but somehow the good cat found his way in only. And we did not have mice at all. After we moved, the new owner told us the cat also left. I guess he found another family that took him in. End of my cat-related story :)

  44. Karen says:

    Hi Dao,

LOL, I want a nice cat to come and adopt you. A sweet girl deserves a sweet cat!

That’s crazy that a whole cat gang attacked your house! I am disappointed to find that the “good” cat was the sneakiest one of them all.

I’m telling you, you are destined to find a good kitty! I swear one has gotta be in your future…

  45. Sylvie says:

    Hi Karen,

I think that the lip is a little too bright for church. Something slightly more muted would be better.

  46. Karen says:

    Hi Sylvie,

Yeah, I’m feeling the same way now about the pink lip, too. I didn’t realize how pink it was until I took the pictures! Hope you’re having a good week. :)

  47. Karen B says:

It’s okay. Nothing too bad or too good. Just average I guess

Karen B´s last blog post..Top 200 my ass

  48. Jaime says:

I liked the first Stila look better (for a wedding). That’s just my vote though! :) This is a fun blog idea (voting on a look for an event)! Thanks Karen.

  49. Glosslizard says:

Glad you liked the lippie suggestion!

OMG! You’re right! I’d better go check her profile on Catster right away! ;)

  50. lexi says:

hey karen – i’m curious to see what look you’re going to go with. yes, had quality time with baby g – mommy/daughter time at the MAC pro shop!!!

  51. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

That’s good… better than it being too crazy!

  52. Karen says:

    Hi Jaime,

Thanks girl! I haven’t decided yet what makeup to wear, but will try a few more looks before the event. Stay tuned, and let me know if you think of any good ideas!

  53. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

LOLOL… she might have her own “Sundays With Princess Lily” series somewhere out there! You never know!

P.S. I promise not to steal her!

  54. Karen says:

    Hi Lexi,

I think I’m just gonna crank a whole bunch out and then take a bunch of pictures! You just never know how something is gonna look until you try photographing it.

Oh cute! You are starting her MAC addiction early, GOOD JOB!

Did you haul, or just go to play?

  55. Julie L says:

I LOVE the look! In fact, I love it so much I may steal it! you look gorgeous in that pic! & on a side note, if your neighbors aren’t taking care of their cat, you should report it to Animal Welfare! The poor kitty needs to be taken care of, and it’s not his/her fault the owners are jerks!
