Urban Decay Fall 2011 Hits a Wide Range of Notes

July 13th, 2011 by Karen 37 Comments

VOGUE! By the way, it’s not easy to dance holding makeup.

Dance with me, ladies, to the Top 40 beats of Urban Decay’s Fall 2011 (come on, don’t be shy). Whether you’re a cutie who loves classic colors, a neutral loving-lass or a babe who can’t live without her big, bold brights, the DJ has a little something for everyone on the playlist tonight.

Like a radio station that plays pop during daylight hours and techno at night, UD’s latest collection of eye and lip products balances practical, everyday items, like a new lash curler, brow products, a mascara and neutral eyeshadows and liners, with the brand’s signature brights.

Wait — we’ll talk more in a minute. For now, put on your dancing shoes. 🙂

15-Year Anniversary Eyeshadow Collection, $55

Just when I thought I’d seen every color available in an Urban Decay palette, UD releases this sleek beauty with 15 new shades! I think it strikes a great balance between neutrals and brights. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, $18

urban decay eyeliner liquid waterproof 1

These pigmented, waterproof liquid liners couldn’t be a whole lot easier to apply. They scoff at a sweaty three-mile run (and the shower after it), but they really don’t like to be touched. Strangely, they come right off when I forget that I shouldn’t rub at my eyes.

Luckily, I don’t do it very often (too much eye rubbing can cause wrinkles), but if I did, I’d probably reach for something sturdier like MAC Liquidlast instead.

That said, I like the 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliners and can’t get enough of gunmetal gray Revolver and shimmery teal Siren. They’re the two that stand out the most to me, and I love the way they lighten up my eyes. Shimmery pink Woodstock, on the other hand, is probably my least favorite of the bunch, even though I think it’s the most ambitious one. I give UD props for trying something different, but this reddish hot pink eyeliner isn’t exactly the easiest color to wear. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A-

Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color, $18

urban decay super saturated high gloss lip color open

Hello, lover! love These unscented, unflavored, richly pigmented stick glosses skate across my lips like they’re dancing with the stars.

There’s a great mix of sparkly clubbing colors here like Adrenaline and Big Bang, and classic creams like Crush, F-Bomb and Punch Drunk, and all of them are long-lasting (all day), non-sticky and easy to apply. In a word: awesome. But I think they’d be even awesome-er if UD had included a sharpener (hint, hint, guys!). MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

Urban Brow Styling Brush and Setting Gel, Urban Brow Precision Tip Brow Tint and Lush Lash Mascara $20 each

urban decay fall 2011 mascara

My first impression of the felt-tip Brow Tint was skepticism (I’m more of a brow pencil/powder kinda gal), but it’s surprisingly easy to build, and therefore use, in everything from natural looks to more dramatic brows.

Too bad it’s only available in two colors for now (Blonde and Brunette). I would really love to see more. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

I haven’t been using Lush Lash mascara long, so I haven’t really formed a strong opinion on how well it thickens and lengthens, which are two things UD claims it does well, but I do like the lash separation. I think I still prefer Cannonball to it, though, because I think it made a better first impression as far as lash length. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B

And what about the clear Brow Styling Gel? I’ll say this much for it: I love how good it feels to comb the short, stiff brush through my brows. It does a decent job of keeping my strays in place, but is it worth $20? I don’t know about that. I seen similar drugstore products for quite a bit less. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B-

Revolution High Performance Lash Curler, $20

urban decay high performance lash curler

I can see Trent Reznor using this lash curler in a Nine Inch Nails video circa 1994. 🙂 I really wanted to like it, but on top of it pinching my skin, the curl isn’t as dramatic as I’d like. Oh, and the spring makes a weird doh-ing! noise every time I press the handle down. Drives me NUTS! MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: C

Fall Urban Lash, $15 each

urban decay fall 2011 urban lash

Urban Decay’s false lashes are usually among the easiest to apply, and these new ones for fall are no exception. My fave is Instaflare, a 1/3 lash with a rounded flare at the outer corner. It adds that little somethin’-somethin’ but doesn’t scream, “Hey, look at me!” MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A

I plan to try some looks with the lineup over the next few days, but what do ya say from the things you’ve seen? Does anything here make you want to boogie?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hi Karen! I’m loving Crush and Big Bang. How does the UD lip color pencils compare to the Milani Lip Flashes? I remember you doing a review on those. Are there any dupeable colors?

I definitely need the palette and a few of the liners. I’ve been wanting a pink eyeliner for the longest time, god knows why, and I’ll either get this one or the MUFE pink one. I’m a little sad about the eyelash curler; I was hoping it would be awesome!

Revolver looks fab on you! I thought it would be lighter, but I am happy to see that it’s not.
As a NIN fan, I love the fact that you mentioned Trent. I played “The Fragile” all throughout high school.

Now I have a Nine Inch Nails song with very inappropriate lyrics stuck in my head. Come on, y’all know the one!

Anyway, that palette has so much versatility! And the lip pencils are so bold! Punch Drunk is calling me!

I love Revolver. Shimmery and silver are right up my alley. I really like Woodstock, too, but agree that it wouldn’t be easy to wear. What is it with me and bright pink liners like this and Tokidoki’s Donutella? I’d never wear them but I want them anyway. It’s sad, really. 🙂

I was definitely interested in both Revolver and Sabbath…I have always preferred this type of applicator for my liquid liners and lately I have been on the lookout for a killer graphite and a matte..but I am horrible about rubbing my eyes a lot!

Hmm, that might be a problem. Have you ever tried MAC Liquidlast? That stuff doesn’t move for NOTHING and it has a similar applicator.
