This Is the Story of NYX Tango With Bronzing Powder in When Leopard Gets a Tan

December 15th, 2010 by Karen 36 Comments

When Tabs was on safari in Tanzania earlier this year, he met a serval who told him the tale of a leopard named Nix (pronounced NYX), who spent every day sunning himself way up high in the branches of a big acacia tree.

Later, when he got back home to Novato, Tabs took the story and turned it into his first book, titled “When Leopard Gets a Tan.”

And that’s where NYX got the idea for Tango With Bronzing Powder in When Leopard Gets a Tan. 🙂

Okay, okay, that’s not true at all. But it sure would have made a great story, right?

When Leopard Gets a tan, one of the new NYX bronzers for fall, reminded me of Too Faced Pink Leopard from the pan, but once applied the color’s more bronzy, less peach and less shimmery — a soft sheen as opposed to Pink Leopard’s frost.

Doesn’t NYX Tango With Bronzing Powder in When Leopard Gets a Tan ($16) look like Too Faced Pink Leopard Bronzer ($12.50) from here?

It’s expensive for drugstore beauty, but this big cat purrs with surprisingly soft grains of soft glow-imparting bronze. If you like the color and can bring yourself to sully the pretty pan, you might give this cat a home.

PRICE: $16 for a 0.44-oz. compact
AVAILABILITY: At select drugstores, Ulta and online at nyxcosmetics.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

Not only does When Leopard Gets a Tan look like Pink Leopard, but Bronze Emsemble looks like Too Faced’s Sun Bunny, and Tan Enthusiasm looks just like TF’s Snow Bunny. (I have the bronzer palette from TF). I wonder how those two compare to their TF’s counterparts…

      Hi Jen,

I’m guessing they’re probably along the same lines — less frosty and more bronzy. 🙂

It really gives your cheeks a nice glow! I like that it isn’t quite as frosty as the Too Faced one. Super cute!

I like the subtle frost, too. It’s more forgiving on the pores!

I think NYX is trying to dupe Too Faced bronzers, like Wet n’ Wild tried to dupe MAC eyeshadows (and they succeeded). I love your lip color, Karen!

Wow, that’s a hefty price tag for NYX! But I have to say, I’m consistently satisfied with their quality, and if any drugstore brand can get away with that, it’s definitely NYX. I like this a lot more than the Too Faced one; I’m not a fan of frosty bronzers. When my Stila bronzer gets low, I might have to snatch this up.

I bought one of the body bronzers, and it contains A TON of product. I think the hefty price tag is worth it because you get so much product.

A full sized Too Faced Pink Leopard compact runs $28.00 for 0.31oz. The NYX dupe is $16.00 for 0.44oz. So it may be more than I’m used to paying for NYX, but it’s an amazing dupe, with more product for considerably less money so I will be buying! I have Pink Leopard anyway and it’s too frosty for me.

I love how it gives you a glow without being too too shimmery. Plus that lipstick looks fab on you! I also like the way it’s laid out in the compact… so clever.

    hello karen,

i’d like to know wether you prefer the nyx version or the too faced version?and wich one would you recommend to someone paler than you?

    thanks!

I’m very pale and I use Pink Leopard as a highlighter. I think that I’d prefer that due to the pink undertones in my skin. If you have more yellow undertones then I suspect that you’d prefer the NYX as it seems to be peachier in the swatch. That’s just my opinion from looking at the swatches compared – I’m sure Karen can also give you a good answer.

How fun! I love the leopard pattern. With my darker skin, I use a Rimmel bronzer as a blush year round. I have never tried NYX products, but there is a new Ulta store that opened up nearbuy, so I might have to make a trip over there soon!

Very shimmery and pretty on you! I like the “more forgiving on pores” comment. Who couldn’t use that? 🙂 I’ve never tried a bronzer for fear of looking orange, but goodness knows I could use a little color during the long winter. Naturally, we don’t have an Ulta within 200 miles….

Tribal Odyssey looks JUST like my favorite bronzer from Smashbox – Soft Lights Fusion Sunburst – at half the price! I’m going to have to pick this up next time I’m at Ulta!

Looks like NYX is a pretty decent dupe of TF. But $16 for NYX? Is it me or have they increased the price of their products?

P.s. You look gorgeous in the picture, where did you get your shirt?

    Hi Karen,

I think the Leopard looks cute. But I thought bronzers zre worn on the whole face. Didn’t knoww it can also serves as a blusher.

My Ulta never has all of the great new NYX products, only the basics. I’m not too keen on ordering makeup online, I like to meet it and see if we have a connection. And stick my fingers in it! 🙂

    Tried both.
Each in its own way are nice but I prefer NYX since it has less glitter to it.
I wish it was a bit more on the pink side

Thank you Karen. Ever since I’ve seen the TF Leopard blushing bronzer I wanted it (but not for $30). So now I see this and think… hmm, they have this (the NYX dupe) for less than $10 at Amazon plus free shipping. OMG! I’m gonna get that. I still would like the TF version for comparison some day.
