The Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate Brush Set for Holiday 2009: Elegant, But Do They Bring It?

November 10th, 2009 by Karen 72 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate Brush Set, $20

Earlier this decade, Sonia Kashuk reinvented the budget brush market, making drugstore makeup brushes cool. For the holidays this year, she’s taking that budget luxe philosophy another big step forward by introducing a line with twisted faux-sliver handles that won’t break the bank.

But looks aren’t everything, and to find out if Sonia’s new brushes bring the noise, I put ’em to the test.

The six-piece limited edition Twist of Fate Brush Set ($20, on sale now at Target), Sonia’s premium collection of brushes for the holidays, joins five limited edition holiday makeup palettes and accessories (also on sale at Target).

Sonia Kashuk Twist of Fate

With a black clutch purse to carry them in (one that looks like it could cost more than $20 by itself), these six short-handled brushes will be traveling in style.

  • A powder/blush brush
  • A foundation brush
  • A crease brush
  • An eyeshadow brush
  • An eyeliner brush
  • A brow/lash comb

sonia kashuk holiday 2009 twist of fate brush heads

Pros

  • Look expensive
  • Brush heads feel soft against my skin and apply/blend product well
  • Clutch purse fits everything with room to spare
  • Brushes feel lightweight — perfect for girls on the go!
  • Fantastic deal; breaks down to $2.86/per item (including the clutch)

Cons

  • The faux-silver handles show every fingerprint
  • Included plastic lash comb not great compared to metal ones I’ve used before
  • Clutch’s fabric inner liner hard to clean

All this and a cute clutch for $20? — I’d say that’s a great deal. It may be budget, but it doesn’t look like it. Another good job, Sonia! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Tuesday confession!

ryan-reynolds-oh-hai

PERVERT ALERT!

Since watching The Proposal the other night, I’ve spent waaaay too much time looking at pictures of Ryan Reynolds.

It must be tough for him being so hot, but I guess somebody’s gotta do it. 🙂

Apart from massive doses of Ry-Reynolds, it’s been business as usual for me. How was your Tuesday?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Karen–thanks for the review of the SK brushes…my local Target still doesn’t have them….actually, I’m only really interested in the Kabuki brush that matches this set, but it’s good to know that it’ll be worth the money!

Work is KILLIN’ me right now….it’s amazing how many people really wait until the last minute to order important things, like let’s say….Wedding Invitations. I had a bride today question why she couldn’t expect to have engraved invitations done in TWO days…..REALLY?!? It makes my brain hurt……

Karen, RR looks soooo hot in that movie! I saw it in the plane so I couldn’t fully appreciate his hotness, but perhaps I will have to rent it now and watch on the regular screen. =D

My Tuesday was all right. Slept with Zena, got dressed, went to school, took my steroids (three more days and I’m free of icky tasting steroids, yay!), got into my jammies, checked here finally…normal day.

What’s good is that the eau de Peu fragrance is very nearly gone, thankfully. Zena has been eau de Peu free since after a head bath in a mix of hydrogen peroxide, soap and baking soda but the scent still lingers a teeny bit here…three Febreze sprees later.

What’s bad is that I have a Marxist-Feminist criticism rough draft due Thursday and I can’t figure out what to write. I’m so completely essayed-out and I still have a month of essays left (December 17, why doth thou be so far away?).

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I like the handles on my brushes to be on the long side. I’m so used to handling paint brushes that I prefer handles that are long like the Leow-Cornell brushes I use. Wait, I do, every once-in-a-while, use three of my Leow-Cornell paint brushes as make-up brushes. Ha ha ha ha ha.

How’s the weather over at your neck o’ the woods? It’s cold and windy here. brrrrrr.

I’m glad to hear that Zena is back to her non-stinky self once more. BTW, are you almost done with your rough draft? Don’t leave it up to the last minute!

now i have to get this set. i have sonia kashuk’s black brushes and they are my staples. i love almost all of them. there are a few i don’t use just because i can’t find a regular use for them. these looks like ones i would definitely get use out of. also, the clutch it comes with looks decent. too many products that give away bags, give you really ugly ones.

i just got the MUFE travel brushes but i was disappointed. they are going back and i am getting these instead. thanks for posting!

    Karen,

It’s about as done as my rough draft is going to get. It’s more outline-y than a rough draft but that’s okay. I need help from my teacher. It’s really hard to criticize my own family (we need to pick a specific scene that generally describes our family and use the Marxist-Feminist approach to analayze it) so I need another set of eyes to guide me. I had problems with my first essay for the same reason–I’m not a person who goes around airing out my laundry. I’m incredibly private. So, I need help analyzing the scene I picked as I just cannot figure out how to analyze it!

It is chilly! It’s 34 here! Brrrrrrrr.

You would not believe how happy I was when I could take a big whiff of oat-clean-smelling Zena and not Pepe le Peu Zena. That was not a fun experience. The only downside is that Zena is currently anti-backyard because she fears the skunk!

    Hey 🙂

I’m a teen, and that means I have little money. I need new brushes, I have horrible cheapy scratchy ones right now. EW! But would this be enough for everyday stuff?I don’t wear alot of make up, just powder and eye stuff. 🙂 Maybe some blush haha.

Lol, for a teen, this is already like 3 or 4 hours of working to pay for them 🙂

And I have three targets less than 3 minutes away! Talk about dangerous!!!!
