The #1 Best-Selling Chanel Lip Liner

July 29th, 2008 by Karen 33 Comments

Throughout last weekend’s Chanel Master Class, the teachers kept referring to Nude lip liner ($28) like it was the mother of all lip products. I must have heard the words “universally flattering” and “best-selling Chanel liner” half a dozen times.

When it came time in the class to apply my lip color, one of the makeup artists ceremoniously presented me with a Nude lip liner dual-ended pencil, gazing intensely into my eyes with the seriousness of an initiate in a cult.

The Cult of the Nude Lip Liner!

I reached for it with trembling fingers… and girded my loins.

Chanel Nude Lip Definer Pencil

Price: $28
Use: To define lips and to enhance their natural color
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

On one end there’s a lip brush; the other is the liner, which glides across my lips oh-so-smoothly and without any tugging at all. The brush is helpful for smoothing out harsh lines and feathering out the edges.

On my lips, Nude is a light reddish-brown with just a flash of golden shimmer. It’s hawt, like Angelina Jolie-luscious-lips HOT, LOL! I finally understand why all the Chanel peeps bow down to this liner.

How to Wear It

Here’s a picture of my lips wearing nothing but liner. I followed the shape of my lips using John Fussell’s (Chanel National Artist) four points method. Since harshly lined lips can look a lil’ dated IMHO (think 90s plaid shirts), I really like having the brush on one end of the pencil to diffuse lines.

Easy and Natural

If you’d like an easy, natural lip look, you can actually cover your entire lip with Nude and then pop a gloss on top.

I wore Nude today and was in a sparkle motion mood, so I added a peach shimmer gloss on top (Chanel Muscat Glossimer). Other lip products would work well, too — maybe Rosebud Salve, a MAC Tendertone pot (paired with Tread Gently, a soft green lime with yellow pearl) or even regular old Chapstick.

Like most Chanel products, Nude lip liner will cost you; however, it’s one of those shades that you could literally wear every day and for all occasions. It’s a workhorse. If you could only have a single luxury lip liner, let this be the one.

Wow, today flew by! I broke in my new bargain basement yellow heels, did hours of number crunching at work (thank gawd for Excel is all I have to say) and listened to old Public Enemy songs all day long.

LOL, was Flavor Flav always scary?

I wanted to stop by the Benefit freestanding store after work, but I had to hustle home to do some writing. Tomorrow, hopefully I’ll be able to pop by and play.

What was the highlight of your day?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Cute! It looks awesome on ya! I hate to admit it but my mom bought me this lines along with other channel products for my 15th bday. This liner is truly amazing.

Sidenote – I am going to vegas at 7:05am thurs. I ordered a hella cute dress from Lulu’s online and I was drying to get it in time for my trip. Well it came today…yeah! My husband thought it was a movie he ordered…..addressed to me??? Anywho he got SCISSORS to it. Its shredded. Its now trash.

    OMG

What the heck? I told him it was no big deal and that I am sure I would find many other hot pink strapless maxie dresses in vegas…(yeah RIGHT)

    OMG

Thanks for letting me vent and sorry for it being so long! Tomorrow I am off to buy many channel items ON HIM!

    Oh, no, KK!

I’m so bummed about your dress. Why is it that men can never open packages gently? Grrr… Looks like your sweetie owes you a shopping trip!

Anyhoo, win big money on your trip and have lots of fun. Vegas is the place to do OTT, glam looks and I’m sure you’ll rock it.

    BIG MONEY!

Wow, that liner is gorgeous! I’ll add that to my list of things to get after we buy our house! LOL I can’t wait to hear what you get from Benefit. I’ve been meaning to ask you what you liked from their line.

To KK~ Oh my gosh! I would be sooo pissed! Husbands are great and all but sometimes they just don’t think! I’m sorry that happened to your new dress!

    Hi April,

I have a friend who used to be a manager there and she is always telling me there’s groovy stuff in their line. Plus, the store is just around the corner from my work. I walk by there all the time, so I am eager to just go in there and play. Whee!

Have you guys decided on where you are going to buy a house?

Very lovely! I still love the two Chanel liners I have, Natural and Tulip! I’m also lemming the new pink one in the fall line! 🙂

I definitely want to know what you like at Benefit! I used to shop there a lot, but then they revamped their line multiple times and raised the prices, so now the only thing I get regularly is their Dandelion powder!

have you tried using other brand’s eyeliner pencils in flesh tones? i have tried using guerlain’s cupidon liner (which seems a tad paler than this) and it does not seem to work that well.

Hi Karen. I tried on the Chanel lip liner two weeks ago. I can’t recall if it was Natural or Nude, but it was really very smooth. There was no tugging at all though I have dry lips. I have MAC’s cremestick liner which tugs at my lips. Perhaps I should get Chanel hehe…

    LEMMING!!!!

i love a good nude/natural lip. i have benefit’s d’finer d’liner and duWop reverse lipliner, but both are clear. maybe i should start buying some colored ones, starting with this chanel one…

could layer under my MAC delish and see what kind of a nude lip comes out of that!

    HI!

I recently came upon your blog and love it! It’s so helpful, especially since i’m now taking a professional makeup course. I love MAC cosmetics but where I am its super expensive so i need to shop wisely. Are there any must have items to add to my collection that you can tell me about? i would really appreciate it.

Wow, that is so cute! I don’t think it looks nude at all, more pink I guess. “Lip liner cult” LOL, but some of them do worth the hype. I like the brush at the end too, handy for those on the run.

as a major chanel addict this is probably the best investment i have made next to the emerald coast duo
(though all their shadows are superbly awesome and manage to stay put through a street fighting session at they gym!!)

i have divorced from mac cosmetics for a few years now as i cannot stand their snooty attitudes when they encounter someone they cant sell a million products too – i know what i want – when i want it why try to make me buy something i dont need just a vent lol

so its been alot of chanel ( absolute fave) , nars and dior lately loving the textures!

item to try – kat von d eyeshadow palettes from sephora in beethoven and ludwig – super rich color and nice textures!

i pack lunch everday to work to make room for my guilty pleasures !

Sounds lovely but I just can’t see myself spending that much on a liner YET. Someday, but not now lol. Right now i’m using a nude liner by Clinique and one by Revlon. I also have a clear liner by Revlon. BTW, your new sandals are really cute! What a great deal. Have fun at the Benefit counter, do tell what you find, I love Benefit 🙂

    Hey Karen,

It looks simply gorgeous on you. That might be the best lip liner I’ve seen, lol.

What do you have your eyes on at the Benefit counter? I tried and really liked Some-Kind-of-Gorgeous and Get Even about a year ago, but they broke me out so badly that I just sort of gave up on the brand after that. 🙁 They’re kind of like MAC with their foundations for me, I like them, but they don’t like me back. I’ve never tried their eye products or blushes, though. I’m looking forward to seeing your pictures from your (future) haul! 🙂

That looks like a pretty lipliner! My HG lipliner that I’ve used for years and have gone through like 7 of is MAC’s Cremestick lipliner in Cream O’Spice. That freakin’ color looks good with EVERYTHING. It’s amazing and I love the texture. The only thing I don’t wear it with is red lipstick.

I love Benefit and use ALOT of their products. I’m interested to see what you like/don’t like 🙂

Gorgeous, looks fabulous! I get a bit wary about nude lips because they tend to wash you out but this seems to work very well and just bring out your natural color.

PS, do a quick google search for Randy Pausch and then go to Youtube and see videos posted of his lectures. He was a 40-something Carnegie Mellon professor that passed away last Friday from pancreatic cancer. He knew he was dying so he tried to make the best of it by giving a series of lectures on how to guide your life–the real reasons for the lectures were so his kids could go back and see what his father had to say after he was gone (not so he could “preach”). He’s done a few interviews in the past year and the “final lecture” was in the form of a book called “The Last Lecture”. He basically stole America’s heart while urging them to live like a Tigger, not an Eeyore (you’ll see what I mean from his videos). It’s truly inspiring to see someone fighting to live his life to the fullest.

    Hi Yin,

Not really. I’ve heard of that before, but I usually stick to straight lip pencils because I’m afraid of dryness.

If you want lighter colors MAC Cremestick makes a few good ones. I’d be happy to give you some recs!

    Hi Ines,

Ya know, I’ve never tried clear liner. It’s an interesting concept to me. Is it more to keep the color from fading? Or is it like a primer?

    Hi Karen!

Well I decided to take the course because I find myself enraptured by what people can do with makeup and also I hope to build a clientele so I can gain some extra cash for college. I actually don’t own any MAC as yet but I keep up to date on what they have to offer and I ogle them at the stores here. But I can tell you what I’d like to hear about: foundations, especially for ethnic (black) skin that doesn’t melt in the heat; eyeshadows, ones with a rich pigment and doesn’t crease (i’ve started to collect l’oreal hip eyeshadows…so far so good) ; lipcolour, ones that stay put. I’m planning a big shopping spree in NY soon and want to know what’s worth it and what’s not…or what i can get for a lesser price, where’s good to shop and where to avoid completely. If you could assist, I would be thrilled!

    Sincerely,
