Stila Strikes Again with Stila Silk Shimmer Gloss in Kitten, Silk Eye Shadow Wash

May 5th, 2008 by Karen 27 Comments

stila-product-shot

Fellow Stila fans, I just let out a big ol’ MEOW! Guess what? The company has just introduced two new products in Kitten, their cult classic shimmery shade of pink.

  • Silk Shimmer Gloss ($22)
  • Silk Eye Shadow Wash ($22)

Kitten is one of those pinks that looks good on a range of skin tones. Kitten’s flexibility helped make Stila’s original Kitten eyeshadow the company’s best selling product.

Both of these new Kitten products appear light on my skin, delivering just a hint of color. On lighter skin, they’ll look a little more pigmented than this.

While I adore both the shimmer gloss and the eyeshadow wash, I fell hardest for Kitten Silk Shimmer Gloss.

A light makeup look with Stila’s new Kitten lip and eye products…

Stila Silk Shimmer Gloss in Kitten

Subtle color and smells yummy!

I’m a little touchy about scented and flavored glosses, but Stila got the fragrance perfect with Kitten Silk Shimmer’s really sophisticated, non-cloying vanilla scent. It’s rich and smells almost good enough to eat.

And because it smells flat-out delicious, I thought it might taste pretty good, too.

It doesn’t. Matter of fact, it doesn’t taste like anything at all, and now that I think about it, that’s a good thing.

As for the packaging, Stila deserves props for including a handy brush applicator with the wand. They also did a great job with the texture, as it doesn’t feel sticky at all on my lips.

How do you feel about the tiny multi-colored flecks of glitter? I think they give my lips a subtle, natural-looking sparkle. In these pics I’m wearing the gloss without liner or lipstick, and it feels like that was just enough to show a little color without trying too hard.

Silk Eye Shadow Wash

A lil’ challenging to work with, but makes a great cheek highlighter

Like the gloss does for lips, the Silk Eye Shadow Wash delivers a subtle, there-but-not there shimmer on the eyes. Not long ago I tried and fell in love with Clinique’s Quick Eyes Cream Shadow. I praised Clinique for including a doe-foot brush applicator. Maybe Stila heard my cheers because they included a doe-foot brush with Silk Eye Shadow Wash, yes!

But the doe-foot applicator is where any comparison to Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow ends. Being water-based, Silk Eye Shadow is thinner than Clinique Quick Eyes, making it a bit more difficult to apply.

I layered it directly onto my lids with the doe-foot applicator, and then used a finger to smooth it around. Unfortunately, it ran all over my eyelid and resulted in uneven, splotchy color. Eventually, though, after trying several different eye brushes, I worked it out.

How to Apply Stila Kitten Silk Eye Shadow

  1. First, I swiped a good clump of liquid shadow on the back of my hand with the doe-foot applicator.
  2. Next, I pulled out my trusty MAC 239 Eye Shading Brush (any other small-headed eye brush designed to work with emollient-based products will do).
  3. Then, I loaded up my brush, swiping it along the edge of the shadow clump, and gently wiped away the excess onto the back of my hand.
  4. I stippled the shadow onto each eyelid in sections, first applying it to the lid, and then slowly working upwards to the browbone until I achieved a single, even layer of color.
  5. Stop there. DO NOT PASS GO!

Why no step 5? Well, because when I tried to add a second layer of shadow after the first layer had dried, instead of intensifying the color, I got blotchy, uneven, caked-on color. Not good.

Even though I think Silk Eye Shadow Wash looks lovely, the fact that I can’t layer with it annoys the beejebus out of me! I like flexibility, ya know?

While driving to work today, I realized that I can also use Silk Eye Shadow Wash to highlight my cheeks. When I got to the office I placed a few small dots of Silk Shadow Wash onto my cheeks and wooty-woot-woot! — instant pink and golden glow. It’s the product’s extra-credit saving grace and saves it from makeup oblivion.

Nuts! I’ve been trying to ignore Kitten lipgloss, but now it looks like I’m going to cave! Beautiful!

And speaking of beautiful, just look at the magnificent, stripy belly on that beast! What a lovely cat! He’s so sweet, mugging for the camera! 😀

    Hi Meaghan,

Yah, next time you go to Sephora be sure to check out the gloss, cause it’s fab.

LOL, I’m watching reruns right now and I’m waiting for the new episode. I am also planning to watch the show right afterwards, “The Paper.”

I like the Lo and Elodie shades too… not only for the colors, but also ’cause I like the characters!

    Hi Pia,

Thank you, hon! I feel like the natural looks are closest to who I really am, makeup wise. I still will do a ‘crazy’ look (well, crazy for me!) just for fun every once in a while, though!

I hope you had a good day today. What makeup did you wear?

    Hi Glosslizard,

It’s soooo pretty in real life. It’s gorgeous just sitting in the tube, even. You’d look really pretty in it!

Tabs loves showing off his belly. He’ll roll around on his back and wait for me to rub it (he’s so weird). He came over yesterday to watch TV with me, and slept right on top of my chest (with his head tucked underneath my chin) while I was chillin’ on the couch. It was adorable!

You are so lucky to have *three* cats of your very own! 🙂

The gloss sounds good, but the shadow.. this is why I don’t like 99% of cream shadows. I have pretty greasy lids too, so this thing and I would def not mix. :S Ahh well.

    Hi Mariah,

Girl, the gloss is a winner. Your lids def. won’t like the shadow if they’re very greasy (I’ve been there… a few years ago when I was uber oily I wouldn’t be able to wear this).

Have you checked out Clinque’s Quick Eyes? Now that stuff won’t budge!

🙂 Kitten looks great on you. Pity you can’t layer the eyeshadow wash with anything else.
Kitten’s not my fave Stila colour though, I prefer golden shimmering pink Icon to Kitten’s nude shimmering pink. Kitten looks a bit flat on me unfortunately… pout

Oh I love kitten! I use my kitten lipgloss and eyeshadow almost everyday because I love the color. I saw these on the Stila site yesterday and I’m going to get it after work. I’m so glad you tried it. I think it will be the perfect single easy color to take on vacation.

you look great! I love stila, and have many items including the original kitten (powder). But, as mentioned yesterday I just did a ton o’ makeup splurging, so I’ve gotta take a shopping rest for a while. 🙂 love the cat and 2 kitten pic though, haha.

How does the Stila Gloss compare to the new Dazzleglass from MAC?

OMG, you glow girl! We don’t have Sephora or Nordstrom here so no Stila for moi 🙁 Plus I love to swatch and feel the makeup on my skin before buying so it’s a tough one. Well, maybe when I travel I’ll remember to get me some Stila. Love the pix of Tabz and the kitties. He sure owns some unique poses. Tell him to sign for “American Top Cat Model” hehe

Oooh…those are pretty. I have the original ketten shadow and like to pull that out from time to time…I like the look of the eye shadow wash, but don’t like the inflexibility…hmmm I’ll have to think on that one.

    Hi Carla,

I haven’t tried Earth Reflection yet! But I have it on my Dior list, for sure.

Hmm, I don’t really use Benefit stuff these days. I used some of their makeup and skin products years ago but once I discovered other lines I didn’t really go back to it. If in the future I pick some then I’ll do a review!

    Hi Karen B.,

I know! The whole layering thing did not go well (sigh). I haven’t tried Icon but it sounds like a very pretty neutral… I want to wear it with some pretty browns, oh la la! What do you pair it with usually?

I was thinking the same thing! It’s definitely vacation makeup… especially the gloss. Post-work makeup shopping is the best! Have fun. 🙂

    Hi Amanda,

Yeah, Tabz was hamming it up. He’s recently shown an interest in climbing on my desk and exploring the makeup strew about! I am trying to teach him that isn’t cool! I dunno, I doubt he’ll listen.

I remember you telling me you were a Stila girl! I looked around on the website yesterday and there seems like so many cute things. I really like how they package their stuff and all the cute drawings and such on the site. I’m such a sucker, sigh.

So, have you worn your new makeup yet? I hope so!

    Hi Apple Diva,

I haven’t tried the Dazzleglass yet, so I can’t compare textures, but for sure Stila Kitten gloss is much more subtle. The flecks are much smaller than the ones in Dazzleglass, for sure.

    Hi Dao,

LOL, I will! I dunno if they’ll tell him he’s got too much junk in his trunk, but hey, at least he works it!

Oh not having a Sephora or Nordstrom nearby is both good and bad! Good because you don’t have the temptation, and bad because you can’t go and be tempted!

    Hi Megan,

Yah… I hear ya. If it weren’t for the cheek highlighting ability this wouldn’t make the cut. Gotta say though, once it’s on it’s very pretty and glowy.

🙂 Just a bit of it yesterday: the chanel lipgloss (LOVE) and shu IR rainbow 900p shadow. I’m trying to “plan out” the rest of my faces of the day for the rest of the week, and plan to use it all, LOL. (but not all at once-I mean by the end of the week)

Awwwwwwww puuurty Kitten, I love this colour on you! Karen, I’m just going to blindly follow your taste in colours and such, since nearly everything you post, I like! Though I had a question – what type of brush can I use with cream-based eyeshadows? A sponge-tip eats away the colour and the regular 239-type brush I have spread its blotchily.
