Should You Be Sweet on Rimmel’s Royal Gloss?

April 9th, 2010 by Karen 17 Comments

This one’s for my fellow typography hounds. I had my latest You know you’re a font nerd… moment the other day when I laid eyes on the scripty font on these here tubes of Rimmel Royal Gloss ($7 each).

Isn’t it cute? I’ve been trying to track it down, but no luck yet.

I have two of the 10 new shades, Sweet Lust (the shimmery pink) and Candy Rush (the shimmery coral), and I think both of them are aptly named because, daaaang, they’re sweet! They take the phrase, “Give mama some sugar,” to a whole new level.

They have a slippery, thin consistency and non-sticky texture that feels smooth and soothing on my lips. I expected them to apply sheer, but instead they pack a healthy dose of medium pigmentation.

As for the way they taste and smell… it’s a little artificial. Not exactly om noms to me. Sweet Lust reminds me of synthetic strawberry shake, and Candy Rush, which I like a little more, makes me think of overly strong orange soda.

From left: Candy Rush, Sweet Lust

On top of that, they only seem to last about an hour before needing to be reapplied.

For $7, I think they’re probably worth a try. You never know how you’ll feel about a fragrance until you sniff it for yourself, right? I wouldn’t say I’m in lurve with these (with the exception of the font on the tubes), but I am interested enough to be curious about the other flavors/shades.

Right now they’re kinda difficult to find online, but I have seen them at Target. If you do decide to give them a try, let me know what you think about ’em in the comments. I’m curious about those other shades… Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B-/C+

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. How’s Friday treating you? What are your plans for the weekend?

I love the clear one! I use it to mix my own lip gloss colors in 5 gram jars with pigments. I love the crazy smooth texture, although I would change a couple of things. I kinda wish it was a little stickier, and not SO sweet, but I use a lot of pigment in mine so I use them more as stains and the sweetness isn’t SO overpowering 😀

I’m tempted to try some of the colored ones.

These look like goodies that I would try when Rimmel goes on sale at drug stores and they go on sale quite often.

I purchased one, but I left the tube at my boyfriend’s house as an just-in-case-I-forget-my-gloss-at-home gloss, so I don’t remember what the shade was called, but I think it was the one inbetween the two you got. It was a medium pink tone, not quite coral. I bought mine at first because I like that they don’t contain mineral oil and are formulated with Royal Jelly instead. Royal Jelly is natural and has many beneficial properties to it, and I think that is what adds to the sweetness because it is made by Bees, so it is similar to honey. The texture, however, I found was too thin and did’t last long enough. I will keep it as my just-in-case gloss, but probably won’t purchase another.

Hi Karen, I love the look of Candy Rush! I hope this colour is available here in England. I like Rimmel glosses, but I don’t think they last very long either. Not bad priced, Rimmel is great for a pre-payday treat!
I find Clinique glosses are the best for lasting power – can you recommend any other brands that you find last more than an hour? I buy both budget and high-end brands.

These are so pretty! I like the pink one best. No idea about the font, I checked but couldn’t find it. Anyway, I have a couple of Vinyl glosses myself, and find them really good, I heard they were getting discontinued so I’m a bit upset about that! But these look nice, so no worries 😀

Oh, I am glad I see your review. I have the older version (before they changed the packaging) and I simply couldn’t stand the sweet scent/taste…it was sickening…

Anyway, their lipstick smell alright though (and it doesn’t taste like anything).

I normally love ligloss that tastes/smells kinda sweet.. Just because I’ve had some horrific playdoh-melted-plastic tasting glosses before! The Coral grabs me (hey, anything coral does!) I havn’t tried rimmel for a few years due to preteen horrors with eyeliner and such. Really a crime since I didn’t know how to wear makeup then!

Hmmm they’re pretty enough but I’m still working my way through my pre-recession backlog of glosses. 😉 (Finally getting close!)

Have you tried the What the Font? app? Here’s a review: http://www.bestappsite.com/reviews/reference/whatthefont-answers-the-question-what-font-is-that/

I’ve tried it a couple times and it’s pretty accurate, but you may have trouble with the rounded surface it’s printed on. Worth a try though, right? And the app is free! 🙂

What the font has saved my butt a couple times 🙂 Just scan the tubes or take a straight-on shots and give it ago.

And wee, lip glosses! I just got my first tube for my birthday (newsflash: I’m a grown ass woman) and suddenly I’m obsessed like some tween.

then again i have about a thousand fonts in my fontbook so there are plenty that come close. Look at handwritten fonts on dafont. 🙂 Angelina font is also a nice one not exactly the same but i like it. hth 🙂

the red one’s pretty cute, but I’ve got enough glosses for now (just need a green one, I’m thinking MAC’s spring bean to complete my collection). I do like Rimmel’s lipsticks though, they’ve got some nice colors. My faves are Birthday Suit (brownish nude) and Crush (peachy coral)

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
