Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy: A Smokey Plum Face of the Day

January 3rd, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

Yesterday I did a look with smokey plum eyes, rose cheeks and dark lips using a few products from the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy line.

Carmindy, makeup artist and author of Get Positively Beautiful: The Ultimate Guide to Looking and Feeling Gorgeous, helped develop the line for drugstores nationwide.

With natural-looking eye, lip and cheek products to subtly enhance your favorite features, you won’t find anything too blinged out or find any high fashion crazy colors here.

So far, I really like what I’ve seen, particularly the eye and lip products.

The Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy (say that five times fast!) makeup products used in this look include…

  • Instant Eye Definition Palette in The Amethyst Eye Palette ($8): three shimmery shadows in plum, pink and dark purple shades
  • Always Perfect Liquid Eye Liner in Pure Plum ($8): shimmery dark plum
  • Lift & Define Mascara in Jet Black ($8): black
  • Luminizing Face Primer ($10): shimmery white highlighting lotion
  • Sheerest Cream Blush in Rose ($12): matte brown rose
  • Color Comfort Lip Color in Sparkling Berry ($10): creamy rose berry
  • Color Comfort Lip Color in Berry Wine ($10): creamy deep wine
  • Color Comfort Lip Color in Garnet ($10): creamy dark magenta

(Note: I couldn’t decide which lip shade to wear with the eyes, so I tried the look with three different lipsticks, LOL).

Smokey Plum Eyes

I start by priming my lids to prevent creasing and to help the eye makeup last longer, dotting and blending Laura Mercier Eye Basics in Wheat with a finger.

Time to add some shadow!

I apply the lid color (shimmery plum) from The Amethyst Eye Palette onto my lids and crease with a MAC 252 Large Shader Brush, and then use the same brush to sweep the highlight color (shimmery light pink) underneath my eyebrow.

For a smokey effect, I use a Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Crease Brush to apply the contour color (shimmery dark purple) to the crease and the outer v.

To finish, I grab a MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush and sweep it gently along the edges of the colors to remove any harsh lines.

To better define the eyes I line both the upper and lower lash lines with Always Perfect Liquid Eye Liner in Pure Plum using the brush applicator that comes with the product.

Then, with a Sonia Kashuk Angeled Eye Shadow Brush I layer the contour shade from The Amethyst Eye Palette directly on top of the liner on the lower lash line.

To finish the eyes, I curl my lashes and add two coats of Lift & Define Mascara in Jet Black.

Glowy, rose cheeks (no brush required!)

I like this cheek look because I can do it using just my fingers. First, I place 3-4 dots of Luminizing Face Primer onto the apples of my cheeks and then blend them in with a finger until they’ve been thoroughly absorbed.

Next, I apply and blend Sheerest Cream Blush in Rose to my cheeks, also with my fingers. It’s a cream and applies sheer, so I do this two or three times to build up the color.

Swatches from left to right: 1. shimmery plum eyeshadow, shimmery dark purple eyeshadow, shimmery pink eyeshadow (1-3 from The Amethyst Eye Palette), 4. Sheerest Cream Blush in Rose, 5. Luminizing Face Primer, 6. Lift & Define Mascara in Jet Black, 7. Always Perfect Liquid Eye Liner in Pure Plum

Lips

From left to right: Sparkling Berry, Berry Wine, Garnet

I couldn’t decide on a lipstick for this look so I tried three, LOL! The picture at the top of this post is with Color Comfort Lipstick in Berry Wine.

From left to right: Sparkling Berry, Berry Wine, Garnet

Here’s the look with Garnet…

…and Sparkling Berry.

I think all three of these lip shades are creamy and rich in color, and I only used one layer for each version of the lip.

Hmm… I think Berry Wine is my favorite. 🙂

I think I might wear it the next time I go out to dinner with El Hub.

Have you tried any products from the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy line? Do you have any faves?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

This is a cute look! I’ve been looking for the Carmindy products for awhile, but no drugstores near me ever seem to have them. Boo!

For some reason, I’m digging the eyes and the lips, but I think I’d rock each separately, especially in the case of the Garnet lipstick.

They eye trio looks nice and I’m actually surprised by how pigmented the lip products appear to be.

Love love love the foundation from this line. The pigment on e/s trios is quite nice and some wearable combos. I think Quartz is my fave. Have a few blushes in powder and cream and they have not let me down. Beaming is so pretty.
I can’t be without a tinted lipbalm and they had 6 or 7 shades when line rolled out but they may be pulling them – grab a Sweet Plum if you can!
My quarrel with the line is the mascara and how hard it is to see lipstick shades in the tubes. Otherwise – it seems very good!

I love the eyes! I was just looking at the blush from this line yesterday at Rite Aid (BTW…all Revlon products are buy one get one free there!) and I wasn’t sure about how dark the blush would show up. I’ll give it a try now 🙂
    Thanks Karen!

I have a couple of things from this line and I’m thoroughly impressed! I usually buy the stuff when it’s buy one get one free or buy one get one half off. It’s a great deal for some real quality stuff!

I have to admit that after watching ‘What Not To Wear’ marathons for the past three days, I’ve gotten more and more interested in Carmindy’s makeup line… So I really appreciate this review! The products look very well pigmented and I really want to make an effort to go and try some of her products out. Now, if only I can find a retailer in SF. I’ll probably end up buying it online at CVS’ webby.

You look great Karen! I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Oh wow! I lovelovelove the plum eyeliner. I bought the black liquid liner (but haven’t tried it out yet)… The plum is stunning and I might have to have it.

I didn’t expect the eyeshadows to be so pigmented, so that’s a great surprise. I’ll definitely pick some up next time I see a sale. So far I’ve tried her cream blushes, luminizing primer (love it! tip, mix it with a matte oil free foundation, the 1 that’s hard to blend, instead of applying each individually, and the application and finish is darn perfect), and a lipstick. I forgot what lipstick I picked up, and while I like the feel, the color was too light for me so I gave it to my mom.

Such a pretty look! I’ve recently purchased the luminizing concealer in the pale lavender, which I put on before concealer, and it works great even though I have golden light skintone. I’m really impressed with the plum liner–may be the perfect color to really make my green eyes pop!

    Hi Erin,

Thanks! Oh, that’s too bad that you can’t get ’em at your nearby drugstore. If you’re really wanting to get a hold of some of the products I know that they’re available online at Ulta.

The lip products are my fave. They have lots of color, feel super moisturizing and don’t have a taste or smell (yay).

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the recommendation. I love plum lip shades so I’ll go lookin’ for it.

I had some beef with the mascara, too (I thought it was a bit thick to work with). What do you think of the brush?

    Hi Vanessa H.,

Oh, you’re welcome. I was afraid the blush would be too dark, too… but it’s very sheer, so I think you’ll be good to go!

Thanks for the heads up on the Revlon sale, btw!

It took me a while, and quite a few trips to different CVS’s in my area, before I found Carmindy’s line. It was worth the traveling though – I ADORE the foundation! I’m glad that you did this post – I’ve been eyeing the lipsticks for a while, I’m definitely going to try them now! Thanks Karen! 🙂

Oh, lovely look! I’ve passed on the liner before, I don’t know why. And it was 50% off…what was wrong with me?! Anyways, I’ve grown quite fond of the All-Over Brightener. I use it under my concealer and through the day if I need a pick-me-up. But my favorite has to be the Moisture Plump Lip Balm. I have about 5, and they’re sooooo nice. They’re really moisturizing and leave a glossy finish.

I am glad I found this discussion. Does anyone know how to order these products online and get them shipped to Canada? Ulta doesnot do it. I have spoken to Sally Hansen Canada but they could not help me. May never be sold in drug stores in Canada. Not fair!!

I love this line! Especially the lipsticks, I have a lot of them.. lets see if I can remember offhand, lol:

    -Sunbeam
    -Baby Pink
-Perfect Pink (it really is! its amazing with MAC C-thru l/g)
-Rose Bloom (gorgeous, my recent fave)
    -Plum Shimmer
-Soft Red (still unsure about this one)

…and about 3-4 more that i can’t recall. Also love the foundation but if I leave it on too long it breaks me out. 🙁 Haven’t tried the eyeshadows but i think i will soon!

I met with Carmindy in NYC last week for a make up consult- she told me that her make up line is coming to Cda in September- to Shoppers Drug Mart. Can’t wait. This makeup is fantastic. I can’t wait to buy more.
