I’m all up in a tizzy getting ready for the Dita interview on Wednesday. Whenever I get excited my stomach goes crazy (I’ve already gone through two large bottles of ginger ale) and I chew lots and lots of gum – it really takes the edge off.
Even though she’s a beauty icon and a celebrity, I’ve been reminding myself that she’s a person just like you and me. And just like us, she’s got her must-have MAC products, too.
I was lucky enough to get my hot lil’ hands on Dita’s Favorite Things from MAC! And of course, it includes MAC products that create the classic makeup look she’s famous for: hot red lips and dark black liner.
Get thee to the MAC counter for some Cremestick lip liner and Technakohl eye liner NOW!
One of my biggest makeup issues is that I find reds hard to apply, but the Amplified Lipstick in Dubonnet paired with the Cremestick liner in Red Enriched made it so easy. Both products have a creamy, easy-to-work with texture. I am completely hooked on the Cremestick liner, which slipped right on and didn’t dry out my lips. It’s gonna take all my will power not to buy every color the next time I go to the Pro Store.
I can see why Dita digs this combo. I loved the color and the texture of Dubonnet. The finish isn’t too shiny, isn’t too matte, but just right for a refined, sophisticated red lip. I’m clumsy, ya’ll, but this was possibly one of the easiest red lip looks, ever.

Mocha blush, a soft plum-pink matte, was also easy to work with. It’s got just enough color, and layers nicely. I liked the pinched-cheeks flush it gave me, and I didn’t have to use a lot of it. It looks really natural too.

Shroom shadow is one of my faves – I’ve gone through three pans, a record for me — and I get a kick out of the fact that it’s one of Dita’s faves too. Brun is a muted blackish brown shadow in MAC’s satin formula. I love satins because they apply easily and blend well, but I had a little trouble with this because I’m still trying to figure out how to work really dark colors in the crease and blend them well. I think with a little more practice I’ll fall in love.
But the standout eye product here is the Technakohl Liner in Graphblack. I am usually a Fluidline kinda girl, but Graphblack is so easy to put on. It’s creamy, but highly pigmented, so you can smudge it if ya want and it still stays dark. And once you get it on your lids it doesn’t budge. I even put it on my waterline and it didn’t irritate my eyes at all.

I am happy to say that I’ve gotten so much work done this weekend, hooray! I am just about to mail off my Hawaiian heirloom jewelry travel story, which is a big project I can cross off my list. If you don’t know what Hawaiian heirloom jewelry is then check out this video with Gwen Stefani, another beauty who rocks the red lip/black liner duo. Around 1:25 you’ll see some detailed close-ups of Hawaiian heirloom bracelets made for Gwen by Philip Rickard Honolulu. In the past she’s used heirloom jewelry in L.A.M.B. shows at NY Fashion week. Pretty, yah?
Still have lots more work to do, but I’m glad I got to spend a little bit of time with ya this Sunday.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

How do I not have Dubonnet? I mean, even though I almost never wear red lips, but hey…
Karen says
You would look *amazing* in Dubonnet! Seriously, you hafta get it. I haven’t fallen in love with a red since Nar’s Dolce Vita, and that was THREE YEARS AGO.
makeuplovesme says
oh, nice job, love that face!!!
kia says
mocha blush looks fab on you….. ummm dubonnet l/s is gonna be my favorite red after vg1!
Karen says
Hey Kia,
Dubonnet is going to look fantastic on you. I think it might be one of those magic colors that translates well on everybody. You gotta try it with the Cremestick liner though, ’cause it helps to give the lips a really sharp, defined and elegant look.
How has your weekend been?! Hope you’ve been having fun.
Karen says
Thanks makeuplovesme!
I’m curious – what are your favorite red lipsticks?
etirv says
I just discovered your blog and really like your reviews like this latest one, thanks!
kia says
karen, no doubt that a liner will be needed. i think that l/s will be my next b2m exchange.
the weekend was okay… i spent less time on makeup (though i did try on a set of false lashes)and helped babyyum to learn to ride his mini bike =) how was yours? it’s now monday, closer to the interview!!!!
Karen says
Thanks Etirv!
I’m so glad ya stopped by. =) I review all brands of makeup, but MAC is one of my favorite brands. Are you a MAC fan, too?
Karen says
Hi Kia!
Honestly, I don’t know where the heck I’ve been. Those Amplified lipsticks are really amazing in texture, and Cremestick Liner and Technakohl are fantastic products too. I don’t have a lot of pencil liners and eye liners (I find that subculture matches my lips and pretty much goes with everything), but the texture of cremestick and technakohl are to die for. I want all the colors, arrrrghhh! I can already see where this is going…
Oh, false lashes! I know that MAC is coming out with some “couture” false lashes soon, for $11.00. I can’t wait, even though I really don’t have any where to where them.
Babyyum on a mini-bike, how cute! I bet you are happy and sad at the same time (they grow up so fast.) Does the bike still have training wheels, or did you take them off this weekend?

I have quite a few MAC red lipsticks, but Dubonnet isn’t one of them. I’m gonna have to get it and the Cremestick liner.
Karen says
Hi Toya,
Happy Monday! Yah, Dubbonet + Cremestick liner = super red hotness.
Do you usually wear a lot of reds? I saw bits of the Emmy’s last night and it seemed like the “it” lip color of choice.
AppleDiva says
Great look!!!!
kia says
no training wheels karen! i even got a snippet on video! believe it or not, i’m not sad at all! i love this age!
makeuplovesme says
haha, im a die-hard fan of MAC’s “MAC red” and also Nars “babe” (very orange red). thanks for asking 😉
Karen says
Hey makeup loves me,
I will look into Nars Babe. I have been curious about orange-reds ever since I met a MAC mua who waxed on and on about how she couldn’t live without her Lady Danger lipstick (an orange red).
And girrrrll, you gotta try Nars Dolce Vita if you don’t have it already. Rocks!
Karen says
Aww, Kia, that’s cute. I’m glad you got a lil on tape. In a few years BabyYum will be in school, and before ya know it’ll be frickin’ prom, holy smokes!
Karen says
thanks apple diva! 🙂
Toya says
Yep, I’m a lover of the red lip look. Let’s see: I have Lady Bug (of course), Russian Red, New York Apple, Viva Glam I … and there have to be others I’m forgetting.
Karen says
I will have to give Viva Glam I another try. I got it in the holiday 2006 Viva Glam lip palette and I never really gave it a chance. Do you use a liner with it?
