Prescriptives LipShine: Lipstick Coverage with Lipgloss Shine

October 13th, 2008 by Karen 43 Comments

Prescriptives gave me deja vu today. I was playing with a couple of the colors from their new LipShine lipstick collection ($17.50 each) and realized I’d seen this movie before.

The lipgloss-in-lipstick’s clothing thing — the easy application of a lipstick with the high shine of a lipgloss — has been done before, even a couple times earlier this year. MAC, with their Slimshines ($14.50), and Avon, with their Glazewear ($8), both released lipgloss-lipstick hybrids in 2008.

Which makes sense, right? What’s not to like about getting the best of both worlds?

What Sets Prescriptives LipShines Apart?

Prescriptives may cost a little more than either the MAC Slimshines or Avon’s Glazewear, and the LipShines come in fewer colors (12, versus Avon’s 15 and MAC’s 24), but they deliver a lusciously thick formula more moisturizing than the hybrids by Avon and MAC. All three offer plenty of shine and non-stick, sheer-to-medium coverage that lasts an average of three hours, but the LipShines outshine the others when it comes to moisture, and that’s no small thing.

12 Prescriptives LipShine Shades

  • Vanilla Latte: golden nude with pink shimmer
  • Mocha Chill: warm caramel brown
  • Iced Coffee: tawny nude with shimmer
  • Sunkissed: tawny reddish brown with shimmer
  • Bellini Fizz: coral with golden pearl
  • Strawberry Twist: rose with bronze pearl
  • Pink Smoothie: pop pink with shimmer
  • Raspberry Ice: berry pink with shimmer
  • Passionfruit: coral with pink golden shimmer
  • Black Cherry: deep plum burgundy
  • Pinkberry: soft rose
  • Boysenberry: plum with golden shimmer

See them here…

Both of the two shades I tested, Strawberry Twist and Boysenberry, have lots of shine and very subtle, pretty shimmer.

Prescriptives Lipshine

Price: $17.50
Use: Moisturizing, with the shine of a lipgloss and the color coverage of a lipstick
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Best of Both Worlds

Prescriptives did well with the lightweight gel formula. It feels slick on the lips and has no annoying taste or fragrance.

While Avon’s Glazewear is a great budget option ($8, baby!) and MAC Slimshine offers a huge selection of colors, I think the Prescriptives Lipshine formula feels more moisturizing than the others and provides the best (least sheer) coverage overall.

It hit 80 degrees today!:) Of course, I was stuck in an office and not outside enjoying the sun, but it helps to know it was there, LOL!

Right now I’m baking a couple stuffed salmon fillets for dinner (yummy with spinach and steamed rice). I still have to finish watching Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Have you ever seen it? I’m dying to know what happens to Brick’s (Paul Newman’s character) best friend (don’t tell me!).

Wowza! Back in the day, Liz rocked the hottie status, hard!

How was Monday?

Karen

Oh my gosh! These are gorgeous. I’m so wishing we had Prescriptives up in Canada right now – I must somehow get my hands on a tube of Boysenberry!

Pretty, pretty, pretty! I really love my Avon Glazewear lipstick, It’s my favorite. I’ve never watched that movie but my mom really adores Liz Taylor. Your dinner sounds yummy, how do you make stuffed salmon? I always see the ready-to-cook ones at the supermarket.

Hey Karen! Have you tried Laura Mercier’s Gloss Sticks? They are sooooo amazing, and a total lipstick/lipgloss hybrid. Love them! I have one in Maple and I adore it.

Moisture is REALLY important to me for anything that goes on my lips. Usually I avoid lipstick all together because it feels so dry. I’ll check this out! =)

Boysenberry is so pretty. I don’t think there’s a Prescriptives counter in the mall near my house, so I doubt I’ll be checking this out, unfortunately. I really like Avon’s Glazewear line. They have some decent products.

The high here is 70 today, which is pretty crazy. It’s generally down in the 50’s and lower 60’s by now!

    Hi Dao,

Girl, you know I heart me some Glazewear, too. 🙂 You’re mum has great taste! I think I’m going to be TEAM LIZ T. from this day forward.

I wish I could take credit for the stuffing of my salmon fillets, because then I could give you the recipe. I ended up buying them at the store in the pre-made seafood section.

BTW, I will be in your neck of the woods (kinda) next month. My friend’s getting hitched in Boca Raton. Will my makeup end up melting off because of the humidity?

    Hi Almira,

Girl, I hear ya. I am very picky about moisture in my lip products, too. I dunno if you’ve tried them, but Philosophy’s lipglosses and Estee Lauder’s are both very moisturizing, too.

    Have a good day!

    Hi Marissa,

I finished it last night. It was a really great film. I want to see the stage play now!

I ended up buying a whole mess of Newman’s Own products after he died sort of in honor of him as well. I now have three bottles of salad dressing in my cupboard, and four jars of red sauce.

    Hey Karen,

Boysenberry looks gorgeous! A nice on-the-go lippie color for sure 🙂

Yesterday was kind of a long day, a full day with my friend at the school where she teaches 7th grade. The kids got a kick out of hearing that we had been friends since we were in 7th grade too (boy that was a long time ago).

So today I’m just maxin’ and relaxin’ catching up my beauty reads 😀

Thanks for visiting http://www.gardenertofarmer.net! I would love to hear if you do scoop up those plums…I will have a great plum jam recipe for you.

I hate to say it, but I am a huge MAC supporter…just can’t cross over to anything else…well maybe the occasional something else…but rarely. Hard to find such strong pigments in other products, which equals no eye shadow by the end of the day!

    Hey Karen,

All of the colors are very pretty. I really like Vanilla Latte but I don’t know if I will get it (just yet…lol). Last week I ordered Tarte’s Vanity palete from Sephora and got that today, and received a call from MAC informing me they are in pre-order for their holiday collection. Ah, so much hauling so little time…

Don’t you love Px? I think they are a great brand overall, but I don’t hear too many people blogging about them. Their foundations are some of the best I’ve tried both formula wise & certainly colour selection wise. Have you tried their Moonbeam gloss? Meteor is probably my favourite gloss of all time.

p.s: Rae – Px is available in Canada, at Holt Renfrew! If you don’t have one by you, I believe they will do orders over the phone.

    Hi Almira,

    Aww, you’re too cute! 🙂

Philosophy has a couple of different glosses — the ones I really like are the Kiss Me glosses in the squeeze tube. Dunno if you’re interested in pink shades, but the High Shine glosses from Estee Lauder Pink Products line are really cute and hydrating, too.

    Hi Lilan,

How fun that you got to go to class with your friend! Were you the teacher’s aide for the day?

Hey, at least when you were in 7th grade you didn’t have big ole high hair with side wings and you weren’t wearing tacky, too tight acid washed Bongo jeans. LOLOL! Those were some ROUGH years…

I’m so glad when this week is over. I’m very behind at Le Day Job and it’s leaving me very exhausted by the day’s end.

Have fun in the OC sun!

    Hi Tani,

I hear that! The holidays offerings always sucker me in, and I always find a way to justify holiday makeup. “If I bought these things separately it would cost sooo much more” is one of my favorite excuses!

I also do the “one for you, one for me,” excuse too! 😉

Yes ma’am, I was “Ms. Duong” for the day and watched them like a hawk during their math test 😉

The only thing I remember about 7th grade was the awful permed hair and attempts at the oh-so-cool feathered bangs – mine always drooped. I can only pray that we never get those days back.

    Hi Karen,

Sorry not to reply earlier. Girl, if you haven’t been to the FLA before, I suggest you bring some good primer with you. November is not that humid anymore and in fact it’s probably the nicest month of the year. However, South Florida may still be warm so just get yourself some primers and waterproof everything (just in case!)

I really dig the Laural Geller primer lately because it doesn’t clog my pores. Smashbox does not do such a good job holdin’ up my makeup 😀

The Px Moonbeam glosses have a gel consistency which is glossy but not sticky. Meteor is a translucent strawberry red colour with gold multi-dimensional shimmer in it. It amplies your natural lip colour without looking too “lip glossy” if that makes any sense.

For the Holidays, they always have a set of mini Moonbeam glosses – if you want to try them I recommend picking it up, you get 4 colours & it costs maybe $30.00?

I also love their Colourscope glosses too, great nude shades.

If you try them let me know how you like them.
