7 Places I’d Like to Wear MAC’s New RiRi Woo Lipstick

May 6th, 2013 by Karen 39 Comments

MAC RiRI Woo
The limited edition MAC RiRi Woo Lipstick ($15), an online exclusive, is comin’ your way this June

7 places I’d like to wear MAC’s new RiRi Woo Lipstick, a $15 limited edition, online exclusive collaboration with Rihanna

  1. To a fancy fashion party with Gwen Stefani in attendance. I’d walk up to her, point at her signature matte red lips, and then mine, and say, “Twinsies, Gwen! Twinsies!”
  2. To Trader Joe’s, but only if I’m also wearing it with Blacktrack, a pair of 33 Lashes, Blushbaby Blush and a sassy, pin-up girl outfit, because A) all those things would look killer with RiRi Woo’s cool, matte red color and B) I strive to live in a world where one dresses up solely to buy frozen broccoli.
  3. On a plane heading to the Cannes Film Festival (oh, someday!), because power reds go so well with crossing big dreams off of life lists. Of course, I’d also want to have a tube of hydrating lip balm with me, since RiRi Woo’s matte finish, combined with a climate-controlled airplane cabin, would dry my lips like WHOA!
  4. To a Tina Turner concert because, I dunno, I just think Tina’s a total @ss-kicker. I listened to Better Be Good to Me on the treadmill last Saturday and had one of the best runs of my life, seriously. If I were ever in the front row at one of her concerts, maybe she’d catch a glimpse of RiRi Woo on my lips as I screamed, “I LOVE YOU, TINA!!” at the top of my lungs.
  5. To a Mad Men-themed cocktail party dressed up like Betty Draper when she totally lost her her sh*t and started shooting birds in the yard, complete with nightie, prop cigarette and prop shotgun. If possible, I’d also incorporate toy pigeons into the outfit as well.
  6. To a vampire techo club, a la Blade (the first one), because who has time to touch up their lips when they’re dancing to New Order one minute and running for their life the next? It’s those unexpected fight-or-flight moments when long-wearing mattes like RiRi Woo (hello, 6-hour wear time!) really come in handy.
  7. To basically anywhere I’d also wear the regular Ruby Woo shade, since the two appear to be, more or less, the same color, with the big difference being, as far as I can tell, the hearts and RiRi’s signature etched into the side of the bullet.

RiRi Woo, y’all! Apparently, gals went ca-ray-zaaay when it went on sale on MAC’s website May 2. It sold out quicker than you can sing, “Umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh!”

Okay, not exactly… It took about three hours, from what I hear.

MAC RiRI Woo
Wearing MAC RiRI Woo on mah lips!

Based on Rihanna’s favorite MAC Lipstick shade, Ruby Woo, it’s supposed to be her take on the color — the remix, so to speak.

I’ve been Ruby Wooing for years. I love the shade, but I don’t really see much of a difference between it and RiRi’s version, truth be told. RiRi’s might be a tad cooler than Ruby. Maybe. Slightly.

I was expecting a more dramatic difference, but hey, if you missed RiRi Woo last week and feel like life won’t be complete without it, you can sign up on maccosmetics.com for an email reminder when it returns in June.

PRICE: $15
AVAILABILITY: Limited edition, online exclusive coming June to maccosmetics.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A (if you like Ruby Woo…)

Day trippin’ to Yountville

I felt like getting out of dodge last weekend, so El Hub and I drove the hour or so up to Napa Valley, allergies be damned!

We ended up having lunch at one of our favorite places up there, Bistro Jeanty…

Smoked salmon with capers, onions and olive oil
Smoked salmon appetizer with capers, onions and olive oil (YUM!)

El Hub’s dish, coq au vin

My dish, sea bass with ratatouille and basil mashed potatoes

Basil mashed potatoes. Oh, yeah… 🙂

Slightly better than what I had for lunch today, which was canned soup.

In other news, how’s it going tonight? What are you up to?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Girl, I totally want to see you rock the pinup look at Trader Joe’s!

I was testing all kinds of bronzers at ULTA today and probably looked completely insane by the time I hit Trader Joe’s.

Those mashed potatoes look amazing! So green!

OMG! Word on the street is they’re building an Ulta in San Rafael! I DIE!!!

How was your trip to the coast? Did you have fun?

Oh, I’ll definitely have to come down to San Rafael to check that out if it comes to pass. Purely for research/comparison purposes, of course! 😉

The coast was so much fun! I flew a kite for the first time in my life, and it we up and waaaay over instead of just up, went across the street, and the wind stopped, causing the kite to drop and get stuck on a tent. The sight of Brian hauling @ss across the street to go untangle the kite and get it back was hilarious! The weather was perfect, sunny and and just breezy enough.

So, new product in the Trader Joe’s dried fruit section that I’m now obsessed with: Soft & Juicy Mandarins. So, so, good!

I don’t know when it opens but I’ll let you know.

So glad you were able to fly a kite, finally! It’s been ages since I’ve done that. Maybe 20 years? Yikes. Sounds like you two had fun. 🙂

Ok, noted on the Soft & Juicy Mandarins. Sounds like I need to get it in my life, ASAP. I wonder if they’re seasonal? Did you ever get the chance to try their Balsamic Glaze? SO GOOD!

Don’t know if the mandarins are seasonal, but they’re such a nice, refreshing snack. Dried, but not too dried, mandarin sections with a bit of sugar dusted on them. Very nice.

Never got around to the balsamic glaze but it sounds amazing.

Mmm, they sound like candy! NOM NOM NOM

So, yeah. The Balsamic Glaze is located near the spices and salad dressings. You can put it on meats, fish, salad, strawberries, cheese, figs, veggies, whateva! It’s rich and delicious.

      Hi MJ,

I did! Got some yummy flavors, too: coconut, caramel, pistachio and birthday cake, om nom nom!

What Napa restaurants do you like? I’m always looking for new places to try.

I got to swatch this and to be honest I’m not sure I want to handle the texture. I know MAC matte lipsticks are known for being dry (and drying for some), but wow didn’t this really tug on my arm already! I should probably give it a chance and try it on when it comes back (or just go for Ruby Woo, since it’s more or less the same thing), but frankly the texture is surprising!

Eh, I don’t know if I’d call it surprising. MAC calls it a retro matte, and most mattes from back in the day (um, the 90s, LOL) had that same sort of thicker, dry texture.

They WERE amazing. The best part was the basil leaf on top. It was crispy, like a potato chip!

I don’t own Ruby Woo yet but I’m confused to either get this or Ruby Woo. I hate matte lipsticks coz they make my lips dry. I heard reviews also that the application for this is not all that good. But I’ll prolly purchase this by June when it comes out again and check it out for myself.

Hmm… Of course it’s a gorgeous color, but doesn’t warrant the crazy hype. Definitely the smallest bit cooler than the original, so it’s only worth it for ladies who have rather extravagant red lip collections or are hardcore Rihanna fans. Definitely won’t find this shade under my umbrella.

      Hi Yelena,

Yes, it’s ever so slightly more fuchsia, but if you just glanced at both quickly, they’d probably look the same in most lighting situations.

Do you think you might still pick it up in June?

Ri Ri does look a tad more blue/cool in your swatch but, either way, it’s a show stopper on you!

Lunch looks great and, as usual, I’m eying El Hub’s choice. Though, I’m intrigued by your soft-serve-tower of basil mashed. 🙂

I had a little bit of food envy when El Hub’s dish came out, but it was mostly because I really liked the mini Le Creuset pan, haha! 🙂 I’m officially old…

So, the basil mashed potatoes. SO GOOD! You know what took it to the next level? The basil garnish at the top was crispy, like a basil potato chip.

I got it yesterday, it was held hostage by UPS over the weekend lol. I like it, it was my very first matte red and second red lipstick ever( I’m 33 something cough cough). I may try a deeper red liner to tone it down until I can stop being so scared of red lol. I have a complex I guess lol. I didn’t think I could wear lighter colors, but I actually can. I said I need my hair done just right for this red lol! I got Violetta too and boy oh boy I’m in love!
