MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick: Pretty and Parched

The MAC Sheen Supreme Lipsticks

OH! I wanted to show you what the new MAC Sheen Supreme Lipsticks look like on my lips. But before that, I should start by saying that I’m on the fence about these lovely new lippies. Yep, I love how they look, but (there’s always a but!) I think they may have a makeup Achilles’ heel…

They suck every molecule of moisture from my lips! 🙁

And I don’t understand why. I typically find lipsticks with this kind of creamy, slick texture very hydrating, but these are like my kryptonite — beautiful, creamy kryptonite.

They’re medium coverage with a light vanilla flavor and scent, and I get about two hours of wear time out of them. I’ve used six of the 14 shades ($14.50 each) so far, and by gosh they feel great when they’re applied — smooth, slick and non-sticky. Plus I think they look pretty great with that blinding shiny finish.

But there’s something going on… After a while with them on, my lips start to feel dry. It’s weird; maybe my lips are still getting used to ’em.

After a couple of hours with a MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick on my lips, my kisser begins to feels dry and tight, especially along the edges. Starting with a layer of a moisturizing lip balm should help, but that’s an extra step I know I won’t always want to take.

It’s too bad because I REALLY like how these look.

Of course, since every kisser is different, they may feel more moisturizing on yours. I hope so. Expect to see the 14 lipsticks join the MAC permanent line at MAC counters and stores on March 3.

PRICE: $14.50
AVAILABILITY: At MAC stores, counters and online March 3 (North America; internationally some time in March)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I know this is COMPLETELY random (I can’t help it!), but here were four of my favorite things today. What were some of yours?

1. Green tea with milk and honey

It’s weird, but for some reason I think this combination just works. It’s like the Mariah and Nick Cannon of the hot beverage world, nom!

Green tea with honey and milk

2. This story about feline pickup artists

Cats are pickup artists...but you already knew that

A recent study showed that cats both adore and manipulate women. Uh…no sh*t. 🙂

These researches must have stopped by while I was out, because I’m pretty sure they interviewed Tabs. Seriously, this describes him to a tee. Go science!

3. This classic Motown song by Kim Weston

It’s such a great tune to sing and dance to.

4. Two words: Benjamin McKenzie

’nuff said.

Mmmmm, Benjamin Mackenzie. Sigh. So glad he’s on Southland, it was a rough go after The OC got cancelled. I like the way those look, but my lips are tempramental, I may have to pass.

P.s. I love your reviews, especially lippies, my lips are just as pigmented, so I always wait for your swatches! Thank you!

Would you believe I just got on the Ben McK train? I totally missed The OC when it was on. 🙂

      Hi Agnes,

You might want to give it a try anyway… I’ve heard that for some people that they’re more moisturizing.

And yum, that drink sounds DELISH! I would probably love it, LOL!

      Have a great weekend. 🙂

Cats? Manipulative? NO! Say it ain’t so!

Karen, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a comic strip called Get Fuzzy, but it is so hilarious! It focuses on a guy and him trying to manage the drama caused by his scheming, insane cat and his sweet, clueless dog. It’s the funniest thing. Not aimed towards kids at all.

One of my favorite lines is when the guy is having the following exchange with his cat, Bucky:

“It’s always about you, isn’t it?”
Bucky: “I don’t follow you… as opposed to what?”

    So cat like!

HI Karen! I love your tea set, it looks like it would make tea time very relaxing and kinda fancy, but not in a snooty way (Does that make sense at all? Haha)

I have a question about lip color. I saw this gorgeous pic of the makeup at the Alberta Ferretti show: http://www.bellasugar.com/2011-Fall-Milan-Fashion-Week-Makeup-Alberta-Ferretti-14430508?page=0,0,0.

The accompanying article says they used foundation to tone down the lipstick. Can you please explain how this is done? Or how YOU would do it, since you’re my makeup addict/expert HG (LOL)? I am so enamored with this look, I just sit and stare at it. Hahaha

Thanks so much and have a snow-tastic weekend! Hehe Snow flurries in tha Bay!

I’m not Karen, but I think they mean that they put foundation on the lips first – you can also use concealer – to negate the natural color of the lips so they can then use a lipstick on top and the natural lip color doesn’t “show through”. Although…the models in the pictures at that show look like they have very dry, blotchy lips to me! I’d much rather see moist looking lips…but to each their own!

I’ve heard that technique used to make the lip color more true, but since in this case they state the foundation was used to “tone down” the lipstick (& after studying the picture of the one model – you’re right, the other models’ lips do look a bit parched) I think they actually applied foundation OVER the lipstick. Thanks for your input/opionion though!

Wow. I love how those look! I love creamy/shiny/Non-Shimmery lipsticks, but the no-moisture thing might be a dealbreaker. I recently bought Smashbox lipstick in pout. I love the colour and the taste, but it dries my lips out like crazy, so I hardly every wear it. I might return it to Sephora. Too bad about these MAC ones too. =(

Your hat is fab – and so are the lippies! What a shame that they’re drying, though. If you’re feeling the effects, I just know I’d be like the Sahara after about 5 minutes!

Uggh no!!! Girl I can’t hang with any lippies that are drying. For that amount of money they should be moisturizing. I hear CG’s new lippies are good will have to try those out instead. So sad….

As for your 4 favourite things:
    1. Totally agree. There’s something magical going on.. its the only reasonable answer.
    2. Hands down, completely true.
    3. FUN!
    4. Honestly? I totally agree. that might be because I’m concentrating on the right hand side of the photo (ie the nice arm up to the shoulder) and completely ignoring the bloody hands. Just saying!

OMG OMG – have you tried any of the newly launched Sheen Supreme colors? I just picked up three of them and these are hands down my favorite lip products! I picked up Asian Flower, Royal Azalea and Happy Hibiscus! I also finally got my paws on a Evolution Revolution and I cannot wait to start layering it over these new beauties.
