Our Destination: An Extra Dimension of Easy, Shimmery Eye Makeup With the MAC Magnetic Nude Collection Extra Dimension Eye Shadows

December 20th, 2013 by Karen 14 Comments

That’s the new MAC Magnetic Nude Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Amorous Alloy on my lids, a Natural Flirt on my brow bones and Sweet Heat in the inner corners

It’s cool, I’ll drive. I want you and your blending brush to relax. 🙂

Where are we going, you ask?

Well, it’s quite a journey. We’re going to a different dimension — an Extra Dimension, if you will — where easy shimmer and smokey eyes rule.

No, it’s in our timezone, and we’re not even leaving Earth’s orbit (or going into cryo sleep). We can actually get there in my Mazda. All we have to do is meet at a MAC counter on December 26, because the inter-dimensional highway opens when the five Extra Dimension Eye Shadows from the new MAC Magnetic Nudes collection debut that day.

Sorry in advance if my car is dirty… I don’t have plans to clean it. Also, please ignore the turntables in the backseat (it’s a long story).

You might remember first seeing the Extra Dimension Eye Shadows for spring 2012. The relatively new formula combines a cream, liquid and powder shadow in a single pan.

MAC Magnetic Nude Extra Dimension Eye Shadow Review
Additional eye makeup in this look: MAC Bamboo Eye Shadow (lids), MAC Swiss Chocolate Eye Shadow (crease), MAC Teddy Eye Kohl (water lines and lower lash lines), Chanel Inimitable Mascara (lashes) and Covergirl Bombshell Intensity Liner (upper lash lines)

When these first came out, I had some trouble with the wear time, but things seem to have improved. Either MAC tweaked the formula…or a makeup miracle happened! — because they keep getting better and better with each new release (they’ve appeared in some limited edition collections). Now with a primer, I get from 8-10 hours without any creasing or fading.

In essence, these are metallic eyeshadows with varying levels of coverage and shimmer. They’re super easy to blend, don’t suffer from fallout, last longer than The Godfather trilogy and look great on all skin types. On gals of all ages, from teens to more mature ladies, and all makeup skill levels (even beginners who’ve never picked up a makeup brush before), they just work great.

You could be a 13-year-old playing with makeup for the first time or a former beauty pageant gal in your 70s (like my glam granny!) or anyone in between — you don’t want to miss these, because the shimmer’s totally on point. Shiny, but not super frosty, it absolutely refuses to loiter in my fine lines (THANK YOU!).

I generally tend to have better luck blending shimmery shadows than mattes (the shimmers are just easier to scoot around on my lids), and these shadows, in particular, blend with utter ease. Seriously, I just sweep, sweep, sweep with my 217, and I’m done. It cuts the time it takes to do a smokey eye in half.

A few notes on the five colors in the MAC Magnetic Nude collection…

MAC A Natural Flirt Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, an iridescent light pink with a Metallic finish

I think A Natural Flirt just looks gorgeous as an all-over lid color or a brow highlight. The iridescent light pink glimmers on the skin like candle light. If you missed out on this shade during Glamour Daze, now’s your chance to right that wrong!

MAC Sweet Heat Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, a soft peachy pink with a Metallic finish

Pinkish peach Sweet Heat glistens in a similar fashion, but it’s slightly more pigmented, so you can lightly dust it all over your lids for a sheer glow, or really pack it on to up the intensity.

MAC Amorous Alloy Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, a deep terracotta copper with a Metallic finish

I’m unabashedly in love with Amorous Alloy, the pigmented coppery reddish brown, mostly ’cause I like wearing it with my current MAC obsessions, Swiss Chocolate Eye Shadow and Costa Riche Kohl. It also looks amaze-er-ring with bronzy browns like MAC Teddy Liner.

MAC Silver Dawn Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, a dirty grey mauve with a metallic finish

As for purplish gray Silver Dawn? In a word: gorgeous, especially layered on top of It’s Physical Fluidline. I think it also works well with purplish taupes like MAC Shale or MAC Satin Taupe.

MAC Platinum Love Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, a bright clean silver with a Metallic finish
Platinum Love Extra Dimension Eye Shadow, a bright clean silver with a Metallic finish

The fifth member of this group, metallic silver Platinum Love, is probably the closest one here to a traditional frost. I’ll probably use it in moderation, like in the inner corners, because of its intense shine.

Really, I can’t think of anything I don’t love about these shadows — well, other than the fact that I’m still pretty cranky about MAC shrinking the pans down to 0.04 ounces from the original 0.07 while maintaining the same price.

What can I say? I just can’t let sh*t go.

Other than that, though, I think these cool and warm tones are excellent. Among the shades, you get a wide range of coverages and a variety of shimmery finishes, and absolutely zero drama, whatsoever, with application, longevity or blending.

Totally worth braving the post-Christmas crowds on December 26. 🙂

What do you have on your lips and cheeks? Because that’s what I must. have. Your eyes are lovely too, though :).

Whaaaat! 0.04 oz — that’s tiny! I mean, okay, so some of these (Amorous Alloy, hello) are super gorgeous, but — not cool, MAC. Not cool at all!

So, I was totally blown away by your eye makeup! I actually kind of sat in silent awe of the colors; the combination is pretty stunning! I’m glad no one was in the room, because I was gawking like an absolute weirdo. Thanks for another lovely post!
