MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara Is Something a Southern Belle Might Buy

May 25th, 2012 by Karen 20 Comments

MAC Extended Play Lash

In this week’s episode of The Mascara Chronicles: Go Drag or Go Home, blogger Karen takes a break from her seemingly never-ending quest for big, bold lashes so bad@ss that even RuPaul would pause mid-snap.

This week’s lower key lash look guest stars the new MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara ($15, available in one color called Endless Black), who some (really, just me) are calling “the next Blanche Devereaux.”

Like Blanche, the man- and lash-hungry coquette who batted wispy, come-hither lashes at suitors while seductively sipping sweet tea through a straw on the veranda, Extended Play has fun with lashes without going all the way (at least with lashes).

Simply coat lashes with one or two layers using the slim, sleek brush. Then, sit back and admire. 🙂

It makes my lashes look glossy black, dramatically longer and a bit thicker — not drag queen-caliber thick, but thick enough to notice a difference.

Be prepared to pout a little if you like to curl your lashes, as MAC Extended Play Lash Mascara does seem to relax, ever so slightly, the curl from my Shu Uemura lash curler. But if that’s something you’re willing to accept, you’ll get extreme lash length and separation in return.

The formula leaves my lashes feeling lightweight and soft, and it refuses to smudge or flake for 16 hours. Perfect for a day at work followed by a night of fun or errands.

When it comes time to remove, just rinse your lashes with warm water for about 20 seconds, and then gently wipe away.

Repeat when the urge to channel Blanche Devereaux strikes again. 🙂

PRICE: $15

This sounds pretty decent! I do prefer a mascara that holds curls really well, but what with great length and separation, if the curls relax a tiny little I can probably live with it!

      Hi Sunny,

Yup, it’s just a little bit! I can deal with it too.

That’s too bad for the curl. :/

      Hi Crystal Candy,

It relaxes the curl a little, but not so much that it’s a deal breaker. Try it! You might like it.

I know! I hope MAC continues to stay true to their mascara prices. Remember when a tube or $30 Diorshow seemed outrageous? Now that price seems standard for so many of the higher end dept store makeup lines.

I agree about Diorshow. That was probably the first high end mascara I bought and used up … then I discovered other awesome and less painful on the wallet brands like Korres and Benefit.

There was a time when MAC was giving out free mascara samples, and when I checked online, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much they were — just a few bucks higher than some drugstore mascaras. 😀 Somehow, with my allergies, buying a slightly higher end mascara makes my eyes feel better!

I’ve avoided MAC mascara, cause the one I did try (can’t remember the name, came with one of the travel sets) was sooooo wet and took forever to dry. I would love to try this, but I’m feeling a bit shy because of my prior experience. I’m currently using Benefit’s” They’re real” and I’m not that happy with it. I do need to replace a few used up items, so I’m considering getting this. Just would love to know about the consistency beforehand

Oops, meant to say “a few used up MAC items so I’m considering getting this on my next order” I’m so distracted today! :0)

        Hi Lisa,

This mascara’s pretty thin and dries fairly fast! I don’t have any issues with it staying wet for long. It’s very, very lightweight, which I like.

I pick this up and really like it! It doesn’t leave my lashes crunchy, which I hate more than anything!

      Hi Jen,

Yeah, it’s a really good mascara! Do you have any issues with curl hold, or are you lucky enough to have lots of natural lash curl?

Karen, you read my mind! I just received a postcard from MAC in the mail advertising this mascara and was wondering how it was. I may have to venture to MAC this weekend and check it out! I love using Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara for daytime wear, but I have makeup ADD and can’t seem to stay consistent with products 🙂

P.S. A lady I work with brought in a 1 week old kitten that she is fostering because it has to be bottle fed every 2 hours…it looked like a mini Tabs – CUTENESS overload!

I’ve never had a chance to use a MAC product but I might actually have to lose my MAC virginity and try this out for myself!

It sounds like a good high-end mascara (I’m kind of peeved that Dior Show Blackout is higher in price – it’s now $25 and it used to be $20 just a few years ago). I’ve been sticking to drugstore mascara since it’s cheaper to replace them and I’ve found some good formulas (I’m very picky about mascara since I’m outdoorsy and if I choose to wear makeup when running or kayaking, I need it to stay on and not sweat off or run down my face).

A good waterproof drugstore one is Maybelline Lash Stiletto (this particular Lash Stiletto tube is red to indicate that it’s waterproof, the other tubes are black). It makes lashes shiny, separates them pretty well, and gives volume. I layer it over top of the non-waterproof Rimmel Scandal Eyes to have a waterproof layer (Rimmel Scandal Eyes is my cheap version of Dior Show Blackout).

I bought it and really love it! I found the opposite with the curl. This is really one of the only formulas that actually HOLD my curl! I have long lashes, but most mascaras are just too heavy and they fall quickly. I am really impressed that this didn’t happen with Extended Play. Anyone with the same issue may love the truly lightweight formula.

I try every new mascara, this is my top pick easily over the past 3 years. I always go back to good old Voluminous Million Lashes, but not this time.

I’m like you when it comes to lashes, if I’m taking the time to battle potential smudges, flakes and the inability to rub your eyes, they’d better be Fan-Freaking-/TAB/ulous lashes.

Also, I’m really loving your entire face makeup in these pics. Mind please doing a breakdown?…

Hi Karen, I love your blog and have really just been lurking but I just really needed to ask what you used on your eyes here. Lovin’ this neutral eye for an everyday look. Is it M.A.C Hey Sailor’s Jaunty on the inner corners and Barefoot on the lid? Thanks in advance!
