JK Jemma Kidd Plumping Gloss: Angelina, Where’s the Blue?

December 1st, 2008 by Karen 11 Comments

Years ago I read that wearing blue lipgloss could make your teeth look whiter, and ever since then I’ve been on the lookout for shades of blue…

…like Angelina, a shimmery blue from the JK Jemma Kidd Plumping Gloss line ($17).

First, the good news: Angelina doesn’t sting! Unlike so many of the other lip plumping formulas I’ve tried, Angelina doesn’t hurt. Some lip plumpers chemically burn the lips, causing them to swell, or “plump,” but that’s not the kind of plumping action I’m looking for, thank you very much.

I also like the lemony taste and fragrance and that the formula doesn’t feel too sticky or thick, despite the inclusion of subtle blue glitter in the mix.

Now, the not-so-good news: this isn’t much of a lip plumper. The formula didn’t make my lips look any fuller than usual (as far as I could tell), and the blue tint is barely noticeable (shoot!). Oh, and the teeth? No difference in whiteness. My fangs looked their normal shade (I drink coffee every day, yo).

JK Jemma Kidd Plumping Gloss in Angelina

Price: $17
Use: A subtle, shimmery blue lipgloss
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C

I think Angelina is a clear gloss with a slight blue shimmer. She’s not a bad shade, but I really wanted to like her even more. I’ve liked several of the JK Jemma Kidd products, but $17 is a steep price to pay for a blue lip plumper that neither plumps nor looks very blue at all.

Which lipgloss or lipstick colors make your teeth look whiter?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hi, Karen. I really didn’t care much about the plump glosses – I don’t believe in them, except the illusion of thinking you ahve plumped lips because of lipgloss texture or ingredients. Anyhoo, I considered getting Benefit california kiss, because it claimed to make teeth appear whiter. I’m glad I never got one of them blue gloss, to me, they are all the same unless one looks up closer. LOL

    Hey Karen,

Sadly, I have yet to discover one that whitens. On the other hand, as a fellow coffee drinker, I have discovered plenty that brought me the opposite effect…

I’ll let you know first thing when I do find one. 🙂

I don’t like plumping gloss either, they either sting or goopy, not my cup of java! I think MAC has a blue gloss as well but I’m wondering if you really want your lips to be as blue as a smurf though 🙂

Hi Karen, there is a blue lipgloss that makes your teeth apear whiter made by Benefit that I believe is called California Kissin’. You should review that one (unless you already have, I didn’t check). I love Benefit, I haven’t tried this one yet. But based on what you think, I might just go out and splurge on it ($18).
    Thanks!

What makes my teeth always look way brighter is when I wear a red lipstick that’s blue-based like MAC Russian Red. That’s the best!

thanks for the review. I’ve been curious about the blue glosses lately too. (I could care less about plumping action). I’m a big coffee drinker too. oh, FYI there is a truly drugstore verison of this out. I think covergirl slicks-the one’s with crest, LOL. they are supposed to be minty and freshen breath and they have a blue one. haven’t tried it myself though.

But you know what? I actually kind like this on you-I’m not sure I would *want* my lips to look blue…it’s pretty on the lips as is. I think I “need” (yeah, right, need) a clear gloss to layer over lipstick….can you believe I don’t own a clear???? For our trip I’m planning to take a nude peach (shu OR 538), and pink (mac modesty) and a red (besame red) lipstick and want ONE gloss that will top them all…..so I may still check this out!

I’ve tried the Benefit California kiss blue tinted lipgloss. It tastes/smells like mint from what I remember. Sort of reminded me of Crest toothpaste on my lips. The sales associate who was helping said it looks nice over benetint on the lips. But I thought the blue tint made my lips look pale. So I didn’t get it.

My dentist told me that red lipstick makes your teeth look whiter, anything blue based would accent the yellow (cool and warm colours highlight each other…hmmm, who knows.

I like the plumping lipsticks because I actually enjoy the sting (I know, I’m a bit of a freak) but worry that extended use would lead to those horrible wrinkles that make your lipstick feather when you get older. Anytime you stretch skin it doesn’t spring back the same after a certain length of time.

I think it’s so cute how there’s a lil dip in your lips – it makes your lips look so juicy! Wait – did that sound weird? hahaha

I bought the drugstore alternative to this – Covergirl’s AmazeMint, in Happy Hour. It’s not very pigmented, and sheers out to be pretty much clear, but I love it! Non-sticky, just the right amount of minty, and moisturising. It definitely has more blue in it than Angelina, so give it a try! What’s $3 for a great tube of gloss, even if it doesn’t show very blue?

(It doesn’t make my teeth look whiter imo, but they’re pretty white to begin with so I doubt I’d notice ^^)
