I’m Adding Lush R&B to My List of Greatest Hair Hits

February 15th, 2011 by Karen 43 Comments

LUSH R&B Revive & Balance Hair Moisturizer

Lush R&B Revive & Balance Hair Moisturizer ($18.95) is so damn good that whenever I use it, I burst into song.

Whoever invented Lush R&B, homeboy was such a whiz! Musical notes
Now my waves, soft and shiny, hardly ever frizz.
It hydrates my hair while it soothes my scalp.
(It really has been a great deal of help.)
With a touch of hold, I’m totally sold
On Lush R&B!

Okay, so maybe this won’t be my year to win a Grammy, but really, this stuff rocks. I’ve been using it lately to get what I’ve referred to on the blog as “brunch hair” and “vacation hair” — touchable, cooperative hair with a bit of hold and definition.

Lush markets R&B as a hair moisturizer, a kind of rich, hydrating leave-in conditioner designed for dry scalps and hair. It’s a frizz-smoothing, shine-enhancing hair hero recommended for hair types that often benefit from extra hydration, and they mention African American, curly, wavy and generally dry hair.

With organic avocado and extra virgin coconut oil for moisture, soothing oat milk, and jojoba oil for shine, it addresses many of the issues I have with my hair.

It also addresses one of the biggest issues Tabs has with many hair products by not containing any animal products at all. 🙂

After shampooing, conditioning and towel drying my hair, I take an amount about the size of a penny into my hand. The product’s a thick, rich balm, and I’ve found that a little goes a really long way. Rubbing both hands together warms it up, thins it out and seems to make it more pliable and easier to work with.

Working in sections, I coat my hair with it, sliding each section between my palms from root to end. I also gently scrunch the ends to enhance my waves, and let my hair air dry when I’m done.

Once it dries, my hair has a look like my favorite pair of broken-in jeans. It’s shiny, with lightly defined waves that feel soft to the touch. It’s a casual look, unconstructed and completely unfussy. Seriously, if a cute boy (let’s call him El Hub) were to ask me out on a picnic date in the park, this is the hair look I’d want.

But I have come across one potential hair hiccup with R&B. Like most Lush products, it has a very strong scent that I’m guessing most gals will either love or hate. I haven’t always gotten lucky with Lush scents. Some have reminded me of burning incense, tie-dye, hemp jewelry and jam bands (not really my scene), but I REALLY like this particular scent. I detect notes of jasmine and orange blossoms — dainty, feminine and sweet.

I think Lush did a fabulous job with R&B, but I’d recommend taking a good, long sniff before you make a commitment. If you like the scent and need serious hydration for your hair, score!

PRICE: $18.95 for a 3.5-oz. jar
AVAILABILITY: At Lush stores and online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A

You might like Lush R&B Revive & Balance Hair Moisturizer if…

  • You have dry and/or curly hair that needs extra hydration
  • You want something to smooth away frizz and add shine
  • You’re seeking softness more than hair hold

Klepto kitty!

Have you seen this Animal Planet video starring Dusty the Klepto Cat? This brown and cream criminal hails from San Mateo, California (he’s a cat burglar, haha!). He has a knack for stealing stuff from the neighbors, which he brings back to his owners, and he’s stolen hundreds of items from shoes to toys to underwear.

LOL! I like the shot of him walking down the street with the bra in his mouth… It looks like one I used to have from Victoria’s Secret.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hmmm, I’ve never tried Lush hair products but this one looks nice! I love jasmine scents too so next time I stop by LA, I’ll have to check it out.

I think you’ll like this, then! It smells really good. The trick is to use just a tiny bit — I’ve noticed if I put too much my hair starts looking uber greasy!

Have you used Ojon’s Restorative Hair Treatment? I usually use a tiny amount as a leave in. I’d be curious how this compares. This sounds quite nice.

A lot of Lush products have that type of smell to be honest. I tried Goth Juice a while back and liked it a lot:

The only hair product I’ve tried from LUSH so far is the Jasmin and Henna Fluff-Eaze! It’s amazing and totally tames frizz…smells strongly of Jasmine though 🙂 Now I wanna try R&B sometime soon.

Its a pre-shampoo treatment….I leave it on for about 30 mins and wash off. Conditioning is optional but I do. And the smell lingers on for a couple of washes 🙂

I totally loved Big shampoo (so much that I could have married it), but I stopped buying it because it contains a few ingredients I would rather avoid. I also like Trichomania solid shampoo and Coolaulin conditioner. And speaking of klepto cats, my Jazz always steals assembly parts for exercise equipment and other things that require assembly. I don’t know why he wants exercise equipment. It’s not as if he does anything but eat and sleep on my side of the bed.

I use Jason Naturals for my dandruff problem. It smells kind of medicinal, so I use Lush Coolaulin conditioner to soften my hair and make it smell good. If you have dry hair, try to get a sample of Coolaulin to test out.

Might try with a sample first though, since it’s packed with proteins and they can make my hair react funny..

Thanks Karen – I think I might give this a try – IF I can get myself to go inside my Lush store. I usually hold my breath when I walk by – that store and cancle stores get to me! But…this scent sounds doable (it’s just the smell of the whole store at once that gets me), and the product sounds like it’s what my hair needs!

That video is too funny! I guess it’s better than bringing home recently deceased mice and birds, right? One of our kitties is crazy for the kids’ toys and Q-tips (we had to put the bathroom garbage in the cupboard under the sink because she’d tip it over and dig through for the Q-tips), but she’s a batter not a klepto. 🙂

I was just telling a friend about LUSH hair products….her scalp is super-sensitive as in will get a chemical burn from regular shampoo! Yikes.

ROTFLMAO at the video 😀 – our kitten britches has taken to breaking into cabinets but no actual thefts yet. He learned how to do this from Mr. Fuzzy Pants who opens cabinets and closets the minute we leave the house (neurotic escape hatch thing).

I also use there Lemony Flutter or whatever its called. The cuticle moisturizer. I may check this out. Im one thats more for hold when it comes to my hair being wavy but I may give this a go. I can always use spray gel or something for the hold part.

I’m with you on the Lush scents. God, you can smell those stores from across a busy street,

HAHAHAHAHA I love the klepto cat! Aisha is a bit of one, too, but only with regards to food. Specifically, she likes to steal Tigger’s food. What’s hilarious is that she has a particular walk that she only uses when she’s about to make an attempt. She slinks along the floor, very low to the ground, to make herself as small as possible so that I can’t see her. The problem for her is, since she only uses this walk when she’s about to steal food, it’s pretty obvious when she’s going to strike. I have to admit, however, that even though she certainly doesn’t need any more food, her slightly lizard-like slinking is hysterical. I usually just watch her until she gets close to T’s bowl, and then I run in to intercept it before she starts eating, lol.

im glad i found your review before i bought this conditioner, scent is very important to me and i hate jasmine! i was hoping this would smell like coconut or something. you wouldnt know it to look at me but the tie-dye, jam band, incense and hemp scene is totally my thing 🙂 i freakin love patchouli! have you tried any of their other hair products? ive also got coolaulin on my wishlist, i really hope it smells yummy and is heavy enough, i like my butt length wavy/curly/extremely frizzy hair weighed down as much as possible. half a teaspoon or so of pure coconut oil does the trick on days when i dont feel my conditioners were a match for the weather 🙂 id love to hear if youve got any opinions on ANY other lush products!

Yay! I love hearing others rant about my favourite products. I’m STILL working through an extremely generous sample a Lush salesgirl gave me when I bought a shampoo there last year. At first I couldn’t take the smell but now I love it. This is the one thing I’d take to a desert island. <3
